3 My Dear friends, Pope Leo XIII, after celebrating Mass, was meeting with his cardinals when all of a sudden he became faint. He said he was given a vision of the evil spirits that had been released from Hell and sent to destroy the Church. But in the midst of that horror, he saw St. Michael the Archangel appear and defeat Satan and the evil spirits. He composed the prayer to St. Michael the shorter one that most of us are familiar with, and the longer version. This long version of the prayer is especially efficacious during times of spiritual combat and when you feel you are being attacked by evil. It is also a powerful prayer for all of us to pray for the Catholic Church as she is bombarded with attacks from the Evil One. O Glorious Archangel St. Michael, Prince of the heavenly host, be our defense in the terrible warfare which we carry on against principalities and powers, against the rulers of this world of darkness, and spirits of evil. Come to the aid of man, whom God created immortal, made in His own image and likeness, and redeemed at a great price from the tyranny of the devil. Fight this day the battle of the Lord, together with the holy angels, as already thou hast fought the leader of the proud angels, Lucifer, and his apostate host, who were powerless to resist Thee, nor was there place for them any longer in heaven. That cruel, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil or Satan, who seduces the whole world, was cast into the abyss with his angels. Behold, this primeval enemy and slayer of men has taken courage. Transformed into an angel of light, he wanders about with all the multitude of wicked spirits, invading the earth in order to blot out the name of God and of His Christ, to seize upon, slay and cast into eternal perdition souls destined for the crown of eternal glory. This wicked dragon pours out, as a most impure flood, the venom of his malice on men; his depraved mind, corrupt heart, his spirit of lying, impiety, blasphemy, his pestilential breath of impurity and of every vice and iniquity. These most crafty enemies have filled and inebriated with gall and bitterness the Church, the Spouse of the Immaculate Lamb, and have laid impious hands on her most sacred possessions. In the Holy Place itself, where has been set up the See of the most holy Peter and the Chair of Truth for the light of the world, they have raised the throne of their abominable impiety, with the iniquitous design that when the Pastor has been struck, the sheep may be scattered. Prince, bring help against the attacks of the lost spirits to the people of God, and give them the victory. They venerate Thee as their protector and patron; in Thee Holy Church glories as her defense against the malicious power of hell; to Thee has God entrusted the souls of men to be established in heavenly beatitude. Oh, pray to the God of peace that He may put Satan under our feet, so far conquered that he may no longer be able to hold men in captivity and harm the Church. Offer our prayers in the sight of the Most High, so that they may quickly conciliate the mercies of the Lord; and beating down the dragon, the ancient serpent who is the devil and Satan, do Thou again make him captive in the abyss, that he may no longer seduce the nations. Amen. V. Behold the Cross of the Lord; be scattered, hostile powers. R. The Lion of the tribe of Judah has conquered, the root of David. V. Let Thy mercies be upon us, O Lord R. As we have hoped in Thee. V. O Lord, hear my prayer. R. And let my cry come unto Thee LET US PRAY God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we call upon Thy holy name, and we humbly implore Thy clemency, that by the intercession of Mary, ever Virgin Immaculate and our Mother, and of the glorious Archangel St. Michael, Thou wouldst deign to help us against Satan and all other unclean spirits, who wander about the world for the injury of the human race and the ruin of souls. Defending Our Religious Liberty Last month, the Trump administration announced it would provide a broad religious and moral exemption to the HHS mandate. According to the USCCB, this is good news for all and obeying the call to serve the poor is harmful not only to Catholics but to the common good. The Basilica is also called the Church of Holy Savior or the Church of St. John Baptist. In ancient Rome this was the church where everyone was baptized. Holly Berry Festival to Benefit Retired Sisters Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus are holding its annual Holly Berry Festival Friday, November 17 & Saturday, November 18 at Sacred Heart Academy 265 Benham Street in Hamden The Festival is a CRAFT FAIR with raffles a bake sale, food, entertainment, and kid s area. A Baked Ziti Dinner will be held on Friday the 17th from 5:00 to 7:00. Tickets are $10 adults and $5 children, and are available at the door. All proceeds benefit our retired sisters. Adoration Scriptural rosary Silence Litany to Christ the High Priest followed by Benediction 6 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time Prayer Chalice Now more than ever, we must pray for young men and women to commit their lives to serving our church Ed program is reigniting a past program called Prayer Chalice designed to encourage families to pray together for increase of vocations to the priesthood and consecrated religious life in addition to any other prayer intentions of the family. Each week a student will be picked to bring the chalice home and return back on Saturday/Sunday at Mass. The family will be assigned to take the Chalice home and display it in a prominent place of honor for all members to see during the week, and they will accept the responsibility of praying for vocations at home as a family. God s Word Pamphlet These child friendly pamphlets will be available at mass each week. They are designed to help children understand the weekly Gospels and readings at Mass. In addition, there are weekly questions for them to take home and work on with their families. Children s Missal You will find Children s Missals at both St. Peter & St. Francis. We will be collecting new, still-in-the-package underwear, socks, bras, long johns and plain t-shirts the weekend of November 4th-5th. All sizes and genders are needed, including children. Collection boxes will be located in St. Peter and St. Francis churches. The donated items will be distributed during the winter season to those in our community who are homeless and/or in need of clothing assistance. Thank you for continuing outreach programs. It s time, once again, for the St. John Paul the Great Committee to benefit FISH and Friendly Hands food banks. Paper grocery bags, which Market 32 (Price Chopper) has generously donated to us, will be in the pews at all Masses the weekend of Nov. 4th-5th. The list attached to each bag indicates the food items requested. Please take a bag home and return the filled bags to St. Francis or St. Peter the weekend of November 11 th -12 th Please remember that the food banks cannot accept expired food items.
