3 My Dear Friends, On November 15th, we had our first gathering of the Body of Christ, also called Corpus Christi. About 37 people showed up for our initial discussion of what it means to be the body of Christ, to be church. I am currently reading a book by Fr. James Mallon called, Divine Renovation: Bringing Your Parish from Maintenance to Mission. Fr. Mallon begins the book by proposing a thesis that we as Catholics have lost our identity. We are in an identity crisis. When we ask ourselves what does it mean to be a Catholic, what does it mean to belong to the Church, what does it mean to be a part of the Body of Christ, do we answer with the mandate of Jesus Christ? Our Lord sends us out to make disciples of all the nations by preaching the good news. In order to make disciples, we ourselves must also be disciples. This can be difficult to do if we believe that attending Sunday Mass is the extent of our religious faith. The Fathers of the Second Vatican Council, which was held from , wrote in one of their documents about the universal call to holiness. It was nothing new. St. Francis de Sales and St. Josemaria Escriva are only two saints that also preached about the universal call to holiness. But the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council encouraged Catholics throughout the world to see that all of us are called to holiness; we are all called to be disciples and to make disciples. Fr. James Mallon writes in his book that the faith that families have passed on for centuries has not taken hold in our current day. What we once did to pass on the faith has not been working. We are called to think outside the box, to think of new ways of making disciples. Not everyone that attends church is on fire and excited about being transformed. For many, it may be the only contact they have with our Lord for the week. We are all in a different place in our faith lives. But no matter where we are in our faith life, we are all called to be church, to be the Body of Christ. It is my hope that this new endeavor, where parishioners but also to nourish our Catholic Church community. We will have monthly gatherings during the third week are open to each and every member of the Body of Christ. There are no hidden fees or dues. Parishioners are free to attend as many gatherings as they want. And parishioners are highly encouraged to invite other parishioners and non-parishioners to join them for fellowship and for spiritual growth. From this foundation, we hope to branch out to stewardship with our time and talents to help make our parish one of true spiritual vibrancy. It is a new endeavor and one I hope that will grow each and every month. We are being invited to once again recover our identity as a Catholic. We are called to become disciples and to make disciples for the glory of God. God bless you. Fr. View our bulletin online: JohnPaulGreatParish.com 5 Saint John Paul the Great Parish Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe (Christ the King) On the last Sunday of each liturgical year, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, or Christ the King. Pope Pius XI instituted this feast in 1925 with his encyclical Quas Primas ( In the first ) to respond to growing nationalism and secularism. He recognized that these related societal ills would breed increasing hostility against the Church. Today reminds us that while governments and philosophies come and go, Christ reigns as King forever. During the early twentieth century, in Mexico, Russia, itself. Pope Pius XI s encyclical gave Catholics hope and -while governments around them crumbled - the assurance that Christ the King shall reign forever. Pope Pius XI said that Christ reign[s] in the hearts of men, both by reason of the keenness of his intellect and the extent of his knowledge, and also because he is very truth, and it is from him that truth must be obediently received by all mankind. Quas Primas continues to ring true. In recent years, aggressive secularist campaigns have sought to marginalize the Church and other religious institutions. In response to alienation and loss of solidarity which tend to accompany these secularist assaults nationalistic movements have sprung up across the western world.
