3 My Dear friends, Today, we celebrate the Feast Day of Pope St. John Paul II, or as we call him, St. John Paul the Great. In 1978, he was the first non-italian pope since Pope Adrian VI, who reigned as pope from January 9th, 1522 to September 14th, Pope Adrian VI was the only Dutchman to ever reign as pope. Pope John Paul, born Karol Wojtyla, is the only Polish man to be named pope. He reigned as pope for 27 years, dying on the eve of Divine Mercy Sunday in Pope John Paul II left a large body of writings, not only as the Cardinal Archbishop of Krakow, but most especially as our Holy Father. He wrote 12 Apostolic exhortations as well as 14 encyclicals. Some of these documents are, of course, more important than others. For example, he wrote the exhortations Familiaris Consortio (on the family), Christifidelis Laici (on the role of the laity), Pastores Dabo Vobis (I will give you Shepherds), and Vita Consecrata (on the consecrated life). His encyclicals included Dives in Misericordia (The Father of Mercies), Ecclesia de Eucharistia (On the Eucharist and its relationship to the Church), Redemptor Hominis (The Redeemer of Man), Fides et Ratio (Faith and Reason) and Veritatis Splendor (the Splendor of Truth). Some people have argued that his exhortation, Familiaris Consortio, and his encyclical, Veritatis Splendor, are in danger of being pushed aside since the publication of Pope Francis s exhortation Amoris Laetitia. Others argue that Pope Francis s exhortation is faithful to the tradition of the church and what was written by Pope St. John Paul II. It revolves around a footnote (#329) in chapter 8. It is a vague and ambiguous footnote that can be interpreted in two different ways. It questions whether a man or a woman who is divorced and remarried outside the Church can have access to the sacraments; most specifically Holy Communion. If the answer is, yes, then the theologians are arguing have moral absolutes, which is the teaching from Veritatis Splendor. Many bishops and cardinals are arguing that couples who are not married sacramentally are able to receive Holy Communion. Other bishops and cardinals are opposing this and hold to the tradition of the faith. This fighting among bishops and cardinals has caused confusion among Catholics, especially Catholics who have accepted the writings of Pope St. John Paul II and his successor, Pope Benedict XVI. Since confusion is from the devil, let us pray through the intercession of Pope St. John Paul the Great that the truth and beauty of our Catholic faith will be presented and accepted with love and clarity. Prayer Chalice Now more than ever, we must pray for young men and women to commit their lives to serving our church Ed program is reigniting a past program called Prayer Chalice designed to encourage families to pray together for increase of vocations to the priesthood and consecrated religious life in addition to any other prayer intentions of the family. Each week a student will be picked to bring the chalice home and return back on Saturday/Sunday at Mass. The family will be assigned to take the Chalice home and display it in a prominent place of honor for all members to see during the week, and they will accept the responsibility of praying for vocations at home as a family. God s Word Pamphlet These child friendly pamphlets will be available at mass each week. They are designed to help children understand the weekly Gospels and readings at Mass. In addition, there are weekly questions for them to take home and work on with their families. Children s Missal You will find Children s Missals at both St. Peter & St. Francis. 7 OCTOBER IS RESPECT LIFE MONTH BABY SUPPLIES for 25TH ANNIVERSARY the St. John Paul the Great Parish Social Ministry Committee will have boxes at the entrances of St. Peter and St. Francis Churches to collect baby supplies for Two Hearts. Items such as diapers (sizes newborn, 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6), and body wash, baby lotion, baby food and baby cereal are truly needed and can be left in the boxes at either of the churches throughout the MONTH OF OCTOBER. Monetary donations are also greatly appreciated and should be in an envelope marked Two Hearts and placed in the collection basket at Masses. Please make any checks out to Two Hearts. Collection boxes will be located in St. Peter and St. Francis churches.
