2 The St. David's Chorister Choir: This year, we are pleased to offer opportunities for young musicians to share their talents during worship. If you know a musician in the 3rd to 6th grade who would like to sing as part of the Chorister Choir under the direction of Dr. Douglas Buchanan, please take a moment to fill out the Musician Volunteer Form on the St. David's website under "Music." YOU ARE INVITED TO JOIN THE ST. DAVID S DIAPER CHALLENGE! Every diaper that we donate will be matched, one for one! Did you know- infants use about 240 diapers/month? Food stamps do not cover diapers and this need is a cause of mental health problems among new moms. 30% of new moms responded that they lacked sufficient diapers. They had to air-dry the diapers, and reuse them! BRING ANY SIZE DIAPER, IN ANY AMOUNT, TO CHURCH UNTIL NOVEMBER 1 ST. REMEMBER, ALL DIAPERS WILL BE MATCHED! Our numbers will be doubled! The diapers will be donated to the Hampden Family Center and Paul s Place for distribution. Kalendar Entries Please send your entries for the October Kalendar to rkrowe@stdavidsrolandpark.com By September 15, 2015
3 Christian Education Opportunities We have an exciting year planned for our Christian Education program. We hope you ll join us on Sunday mornings from 9:00 9:50 a.m. beginning September 20! This will be our third year to use the Feasting on the Word curriculum. Each week we ll explore one of the lectionary passages in an engaging, age appropriate way. We will look at biblical passages from four perspectives Where to go for Sunday School WHAT is important to know? WHERE is God in these Words? SO WHAT does this mean for our lives? NOW WHAT is God s word calling us to do? 3 year olds through 3 rd graders will gather in the Children s Chapel for the Bible story of the day at the beginning of each Sunday school hour. After story time, the children will be led by their teachers to their classrooms for further exploration of the story, craft responses, and games. Class groups and room assignments are as follows: Preschool (3 and 4 year olds) and Kindergarten 3 year old Day School Classroom Pre-First and 1 st Grade Day School Kindergarten Classroom 2 nd and 3 rd Grade Day School Library 4 th and 5 th graders will meet in the Library (enter by the piano in church) from 9:00 9:50 a.m. Middle School (6 th through 8 th Graders) will meet in the Vestry Room from 9:00 9:50 a.m. Our High School class will meet once or twice a month in the Rector s Office from 9:00 9:50 a.m. Please join us! Are you interested in teaching Sunday School this year? If so, we would LOVE to have you! No teaching experience is necessary. We will have teams of two or three teachers in each class so that one person doesn t have to teach every Sunday. We provide the curriculum, materials, crafts, game ideas, etc. Please contact Roxanne Tedford (rtedford@stdavidsrolandpark.com) if you are interested in or have any questions about teaching Sunday School. It s time to sign up for Sunday School! The first day of Sunday School (September 20) will be here before you know it! Sunday School class lists will be available in the Great Hall on Sunday, September 6. Please check the class lists and make sure that we have your child s correct grade in school and birthdate. If it s more convenient, you can Roxanne Tedford (rtedford@stdavidsrolandpark.com) with your child s name, grade and birthdate and she will make sure that we have you on the correct class list. Thank you! EYC Kickoff Event Join us on Sunday, October 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 in the Great Hall for our first EYC event of the year. This year the EYC group will meet once or twice a month on Sunday evenings, typically from 5:30 to 7:30. We have a very fun year planned! Please come and bring a friend!
4 Music Dear Friends, During summer month many musicians take the opportunity of a respite from the busyness of the program year to study, practice, listen to new repertoire, and engage with colleagues. This summer I had the privilege of being a participant in the 2015 College Music Society International Conference which took place during June in Stockholm, Sweden and Helsinki, Finland. During the conference, I was honored to perform the international premier of a new piano composition of mine at the Royal Conservatory of Stockholm, and to present research on the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. I also heard from fellow scholars, teachers, composers, performers, and church musicians, and learn through their challenges and successes about the state of music-making in America and beyond. Following the conference Kelly and I travelled to Norway and visited the Nidarosdomen or Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, the National Cathedral of Norway. (We also travelled through the Dovre Mountains, the infamous lair of the Mountain King, so aptly illustrated in Edvard Grieg s Peer Gynt suite.) At the cathedral which also supports a local Anglican congregation we attended a service of Prayers and Music, a simple liturgy alternating spoken and musical offerings. The emotional and spiritual climax of the service wasn t the grand postlude at the service s conclusion but rather a simple recitation of the Lord s Prayer towards the end of the service importantly, with each pilgrim speaking in her or his own language. The effect was incredible here, in a sacred space hundreds of years old, were voices of strangers coming together in different tongues, with unified purpose, surrounded by rituals and music. Though learning, scholarship, and language can give us the context and understanding necessary to perform rites and liturgy, it is the focused togetherness of music and prayer which allows us to forget the specifics and grant us common entrance to, as the Psalmist say, the beauty of Holiness. It is with this beauty in mind that I have entered into planning the music for this coming year, which sees many exciting events preparing to unfold. In , we will welcome our new Ensemble-in-Residence, The Broken Consort, whose work's "extraordinary sonorousness" has been praised by critics as early music turned early magic," that's never short of imagination." They will present three programs throughout the year, at both the First Friday and Evensong series. Other notable events include performances of local luminaries, including John Nauman, pianist, and Violaine Melançon, the violinist of the Peabody Trio. And, of course, we will be celebrating the 40 th Anniversary of the Baltimore Bach Marathon! One particularly exciting aspect of this season is the commissioning of a new work, a setting of the Preces and Responses (the Prayers for Evensong) by Tariq Al-Sabir, a Baltimore native and former student of mine who is now pursuing graduate study at NYU. A passionate supporter of social justice-through-art, Tariq s work will be premiered by the Choir at the Evensong in Celebration for Martin Luther King, Jr. in January. I invite you to take a moment to learn more about everything that s coming up from concerts to anthems to opportunities for you, too, to make music on the Music portion of the St. David s website, But one step at a time: first we will welcome back the choir at our homecoming service on September 13, suitably featuring music by Welsh composers, and kick-off the music series on September 20 with the first Evensong, beginning with a pre-service recital at 4:30 by our own soprano Kerry Holahan joined by instrumentalists from Charm City Baroque. Most importantly, I remind you of the opportunity to contribute to the music series through means of time, talent, and treasure whether that is donating financially to the music series, signing up to volunteer (musically or otherwise), or simply bringing yourself and others to attend musical events and being present together in the beauty of holiness. I look forward to singing with you, Doug
5 Outreach Thank you to everyone who so graciously participated in the Fill a Backpack Outreach project! The backpacks were distributed to Hampden Pre- School and Elementary students by the Hampden Family Center. The families were very appreciative last year, and we look forward to helping them again get ready for a new school year! The Outreach Committee Clothing Donations Needed: Please remember Paul s Place when you clean out your closets this fall. Clean, good condition clothing and shoes for all ages are needed. Sheets, towels, and clean pillows are also welcome. Small suitcases can also be donated! If you haven t used it for a year, Paul s Place would be delighted to have it! Yellow Bags? Remember them? Please fill up a yellow bag once this month. There is a list of healthy foods in the back of the church. All food will be distributed by the Hampden Food Pantry and our bags returned to us to be refilled. Thank you! the Outreach Committee
