1 The Kalendar June 2014 Diocesan Convention A Report from our Delegation By Carolyn Janowski and Dick Roszel The 230 th Convention of the Diocese of Maryland met on the second and third of May at Turf Valley Inn. Representing St. David's were the Rector, the Assistant Rector, Carolyn Janowski and Dick Roszel. These conventions can sometimes be tiresome affairs, discussing the nuts and bolts of the Diocese. While some of that took place this year the business of God's people in this diocese must continue the most important issue to come before us was the election of a Bishop Suffragan, which Bishop Sutton called for at last year's convention. (A Bishop Suffragan is an elected, rather than appointed, assistant to the Bishop Diocesan, who has tenure but not right of succession.) As many of you know there were four candidates for this important position, all women, all extremely well qualified with many gifts for ministry. After several ballots one of the candidates withdrew. On the fourth ballot, the Rev. Canon Heather Cook was elected to be the next Bishop Suffragan. Currently she is Canon to the Ordinary of the Diocese of Easton, our neighbor across the Bay Bridge. Canon Cook is no stranger to Maryland, having grown up as the daughter of a former Rector of Old St Paul's in downtown Baltimore. In accordance with church canon law, within the next 120 days the Diocese of Maryland must receive consents to the election from a majority of the diocesan standing committees and bishops with jurisdiction in The Episcopal Church. God willing and consents received, Canon Cook will be consecrated Bishop Suffragan of Maryland on Saturday, September 6 th, at the Church of the Redeemer on Charles Street. The principal consecrator will be the Most Reverend Katharine Jefferts Schori, Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church. As conventions go this was a pretty good one. It's always good to see old friends again, to share a meal and a laugh. If you haven't had the opportunity to attend a convention it's definitely worth a visit. You will see the people of God working for the people of God! Summer Service Schedule June 22 - August 31 9:00 a.m. - Holy Eucharist with Hymns

4 PLEASE CONSIDER THIS Just as within your own household, St. David s depends on a regular income stream in order to pay regularly occurring, as well as sometime unexpected expenses. In the case of the church the majority of that income is derived from your direct contributions. St. David s depends on your regular and generous financial support in order to pay salaries, support programs, and maintain our buildings & grounds so that we may effectively carry out the ministry of the church. Please help us by making sure that your pledge contributions are current. If you know you will be away for several Sundays, please consider dropping a check in the mail. Thank you for helping us continue the ministries to which we are all called as members and friends of St. David s; your consistent support is vital and very much appreciated!
