Today s Special Music: Charles Hutchinson Gabriel was born in Wilton, Muscatine County, Iowa, and raised on a farm. His father led singing schools in their home and young Charles developed an interest in music. Never formally trained in music, he began to travel and lead his own shape note singing schools at the age of 17. Gabriel is credited with writing some 7,000 to 8,000 gospel songs, the best known being, "Will the Circle Be Unbroken". Today's anthem was inspired by the words of Gabriel s son as he left for World War I. Among his last words to his father were, "Dad, if I never see you again here, I ll meet you where the gates never swing outward." 6 Welcome Rev. Drew Ensz, Guest Preacher: This morning we are delighted to welcome our guest preacher Rev. Drew Ensz. Rev. Ensz is the Ministry Director at Arise Campus Ministry at George Mason University. Rev. Ensz grew up in the Baltimore area and graduated from Virginia Tech in 2006 with a major in Sociology and a minor in Religious Studies. He attended Eastern Mennonite Seminary and graduated in He worked as a Youth Director for eight years in Northern Virginia before receiving his first appointment. He is married to Catie and they have two children, Josiah and Benjamin. Pastor Grace s Listening Tour TRINITY UMC S WEEKLY NEWS Listening Tours with Pastor Grace: Pastor Grace wants to hear from you! Blessing of the Backpacks: As school starts up again this fall, we invite all students (Preschool through Grad School) to bring their backpacks on Sunday, September 9 for a special blessing. For more information, contact Carrie Pritts at christianformation@trinityalexandria.org. Trinity-Beverley Hills Youth will be kicking off Sunday, September 9 at 5:30 PM at Beverley Hills UMC. This is for all youth 6th through 12th grade. It will be an opportunity for parents to meet other parents, youth to meet other youth, and to tour Beverley Hills. We will also be going over what the first half of the year is going to look like and share some important dates with everyone. As the date approaches there will be more information so be on the look out for that. Join your Trinity family and other Christians from the area on Saturday, September 22 at Nationals Stadium for Faith Day. The Nats face off against the Mets starting at 4:05 PM and after the game there will be a concert by the National Community Church Praise Band as well as testimonies from Nats players. Tickets are $20 each and $5 of each ticket price will go to help The House DC, a non profit that seeks to transform and empower the lives of inner city youth and their families through Christ. All festivities will be over before 9 PM so this is definitely a family friendly event. The Chancel Choir is taking its traditional summer sabbatical, resuming rehearsals after Labor Day. Special music will be offered by individuals during July and August. During that time, you will hear organ solos, vocal duets, handbell duets and singing ensembles. The invitation to all in the congregation to participate musically in the services is extended not only during the summer but throughout the year. New singers and ringers of all ages can always find a welcome in the musical program at Trinity. Contact our Music Director, Linda Cancellieri for more details at music@trinityalexandria.org. Christ House Update: Katie Cook (kcook@dlpolitics.com) is Trinity s Volunteer Coordinator for Christ House. Trinity sends 2-4 volunteers the second Sunday of every month, to help the Christ House staff, set up, prepare and serve dinner and clean up after. Arrival time is 3:15 PM, and departure usually around 6 PM. To volunteer for this worthy mission see Katie, who can answer any questions you might have.
