1 The Kalendar February 2014 CONFIRMATION and RECEPTION in THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH In the course of their Christian development, those baptized at an early age are expected, when they are ready and have been duly prepared, to make a mature public affirmation of their faith and commitment to the responsibilities of their Baptism and to receive the laying on of hands by the bishop. The Book of Common Prayer, 1979, p. 412 On Sunday, May 18 there will be an opportunity for teenagers (grade 8 and older) to be Confirmed, and adults to either be Confirmed or Received into The Episcopal Church* (see footnote below). Shortly, a letter will go out to all teenagers in grade 8-12 who according to our records have not yet been confirmed announcing the upcoming training for them. We will also be offering an Inquirers Class during the Adult Forum time in April and May for adults who desire to be Confirmed or Received on May 18. As we approach this important time of preparation and subsequent milestone in the lives of our teenagers and our adult members, I share with you the following excerpt from Guidelines for Confirmation and Reception in the Diocese of Maryland It is important to emphasize that confirmation is an individual adult rite of discipleship. To that end, to receive the sacramental rite of confirmation in the Diocese of Maryland it is expected that each candidate: will have received quality instruction in the parish. A period of preparation should take place in the parish that includes the basics of the Christian faith and the Anglican expression of it. Each candidate should be of such maturity as to be able to make meaningful vows that impact their lives. be old enough to make a mature decision. The minimum age recommended by the Diocese of Maryland is 15, but pastoral exceptions may be allowed for youth 12 to 14, but no younger than 12. (St. David s will include all current 8th graders.) will gather to meet with the bishop before the service. Your bishop(s) firmly believe these to be important ingredients for confirmation and have dedicated the time and energy to support these expectations. Parents: please take the opportunity to review the above with your eligible teen so they may understand the seriousness of this commitment: confirming the vows that you and their godparents made on their behalf when they were infants. Fr. Scott+ *Confirmation or Reception? Individuals whose baptisms have been recorded in a denominational context and who wish to affirm their faith as adults shall be presented for Confirmation. Candidates who have been confirmed previously by a bishop in the historic succession (Roman Catholic, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, or Eastern Orthodox) or have made an adult affirmation of faith (baptized as adults) may be presented for Reception into The Episcopal Church during a service of confirmation.
