2 FROM THE RECTOR One of the great blessings of summer vacation is the opportunity to get reacquainted with leisure. For most of the year most of us have very little time, if any at all, to spend a day or even an hour pausing from our work and responsibilities to meander. Whenever I plan a weekend retreat, I carefully, deliberately designate the time from lunch until dinner on Saturday as FREETIME. When the planning is done in collaboration with others, I often get some push-back about this. Isn't this too many hours of nothing? Shouldn't we provide more content? Aren't people going to expect to get something more out of this time away? I am generally quite good at compromise, but on this point, I am not my usual go-with-the-flow self. My instinct is to defend these 4 or 5 hours of unstructured time as if I'm fighting for our lives. When I attend a weekend retreat someone else has planned, and am handed the schedule, my eyes go first to Saturday afternoon to see if the organizers share my point of view here, and when I see 12:00 Lunch 12:30 Freetime 5:30 Dinner my whole body relaxes. I can open myself to whatever else is being offered when I know that I will have one long, luxurious afternoon to do whatever I want, even nothing at all...time in which nothing is expected of me, no learning, no thinking, no doing. Free time. We need it. Among the many joys of my vacation each year is having time to read novels that have gathered dust on my bedside table. I love immersing myself in the voice of a great writer, and having my heart expanded, even changed, by a beautiful story. One of the books I read this summer was Let the Great World Spin, by Colum McCann. I m so grateful to have had the leisure to read these words: What Corrigan wanted was a fully believable God, one you could find in the grime of the everyday. The comfort he got from the hard, cold truth the filth, the war, the poverty was that life could be capable of small beauties. He wasn t interested in the glorious tales of the afterlife or the notions of a honey-soaked heaven. Rather he consoled himself with the fact that, in the real world, when he looked closely into the darkness he might find the presence of a light, damaged and bruised, but a little light all the same. He wanted, quite simply, for the world to be a better place, and he was in the habit of hoping for it. Out of that came the sort of triumph that went beyond theological proof, a cause for optimism against all the evidence. The surprise discovery of beautiful, sound theology in a summer novel, the gift of saying yes to spending a whole afternoon doing whatever your children want to do, the time to give God your full attention for hours on end these are some of the blessings of summer vacation. The vestry shared summer stories of their experiences of leisure at last night s meeting, and I was glad to know of the gifts they d received. I look forward to hearing how you ve been blessed in your rest this summer. Faithfully, Pastor Carri+

5 A Note of Thanks Dear Friends, I am not often without words, but the love and support you've shown me in the last 6 weeks have left me finding it difficult to express the extent of my gratitude. I've learned a lot from being on the receiving side of such care; I have always known that Saint Mark's is a wonderful manifestation of community formed by Christ's love, and in this short period I've experienced so many examples of that beautiful character. Tom, Stephen, Andrew, and I greatly appreciate your prayers, cards, Facebook messages, s, and meals & treats as the days have gone by; we are surrounded by a great and gentle cloud of caring, and day after day we've looked at each other and exclaimed, "We have the best friends!" I received good news in the pathology report from my second surgery, as there was no sign of any further spread of the cancer. I'm trying to be patient as my body heals and to be open to the lessons that come with a period of enforced rest; in a world that urges us to be constantly doing, I especially treasure the encouragement Pastor Carri, the staff and clergy of our parish, the vestry, and many of you have given me to be still. I most likely have some further treatment ahead of me--i'll know more about that in a few weeks after appointments with my doctors--but until then, my primary task is to recover my strength, voice, and health. I remember seeing as a child a poster that announced, "Life is what happens to you while you're making other plans." That has indeed been the case for me this summer, and the challenge has been to embrace the life that has unfolded, to laugh at the unexpected and delight in small joys, to accept the inevitable pain and frustration, and to offer it all to God...knowing that on the days when that's too much for me, all of you are praying on my behalf. Thanks be to God for the blessings of this gathering of God's faithful people as we journey through life together! With love and prayers, Mo. Betsy This month's message from the Saint Mark's Endowment Committee is: "Uncle Albert did not have a Will or a Trust. It took three years to settle his estate. Your Will or Trust can help your family, can help your Parish, and can avoid unnecessary expenses following your death."
