How is it that you ve moved so far away? one man asked another. Perhaps, the other replied, you have moved away. By standing still. This exchange very well could have happened between Peter and Jesus, had Peter been allowed to erect tents to stay on the mount of the Transfiguration. He nearly succumbed to the temptation to stay in a place of wonder and light. But Jesus knew the hard truth: we are on a continual journey when we are walking the paths of God s will. It is not good for us to stay in one place on our faith journey. Equally unhealthy is staying put in times of joy and wonder to avoid life s difficulties, or to wallow in our trials and temptations and fail to be companions for our sisters and brothers who are also suffering or celebrating! The pilgrim Church is required to do one thing on its Lenten journey: to walk continually with Christ as his Body born of water and the Spirit, seeking God s will, helping the reign of God to be known on earth, being led to the end of our journey, transfigured for all time into the company of heaven. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION FEBRUARY & MARCH ANNOUNCEMENTS NO CLASSES on Sunday, March 12 & on Wednesday, March 15 due to Calallen Spring Break. CLASSES RESUME ON SUNDAY, MARCH 19 & WEDNESDAY, MARCH 22. We will make up the March 8 class at the end of the CCD year. Last day of CCD for Wednesday classes will be on May 3 instead of April 26. CATHOLICS RETURNING HOME will meet and welcome inactive Catholics back to active involvement in the Church. There will be six 2- hour sessions on Mondays. It will begin tomorrow, March 13 at 6:30 pm in St. William Hall. Refreshments will be served and childcare will be available. All members are asked and urged to attend. MAKE WEDNESDAYS SPECIAL DURING THE LENTEN SEASON Catholic families and individuals are encouraged to spend more time in prayer during Lent and one way of doing this is to come to the Rosary on Wednesdays at 6 pm; recite the Novena Prayers to the Immaculate Conception and attend Mass at 6:30 pm and stay for the Stations of the Cross immediately afterwards. The Stations of the cross will begin on March 15. The Stations of the Cross will also be said at St. Mary s Mission on Fridays at 6:30 pm. This will begin on Friday, March 10th.mice & Beans wi PICTURES NEEDED!!! We are looking for pictures from all ministries for the past 50 years here at St. Peter s. If you or anyone you know, have pictures of past St. Peter s events, celebrations, festivals, etc. we would love to have a copy of them for a DVD project celebrating the church s 50th Anniversary. If you have any pictures we ask that you do one of the following: Please make copies of all original pictures, place in a zip lock bag and drop them off at the parish office or you may scan (Recommended) and send them to spmusic.youth2017@gmail.com You can also use your phone to take a picture of your pictures and it that way. 4 Second Sunday of Lent Page 4 Visit of Pilgrim Virgin Statue What: The Pilgrim Virgin statue of Our Lady of Fatima is available for a visit to your home in whatever evening you are available, preferably between the hours of 7-9 PM. The visit will start with the Rosary, followed by a Movie of Our Lady of Fatima, and after the movie any discussion with those interested. Who: Invite your family and friends, especially those who have fallen away from the Catholic Faith and no longer attend mass. This is a great opportunity to evangelize in the manner of providing information about the message of Our Lady of Fatima. Others present may also have specific questions about the Catholic faith. The discussion should be friendly and nonthreatening to those present. Also available, at another time of your choice, the enthronement and consecration of your home to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. When: In the evening at (7-9 PM) Who: Invite your family and friends, and those who no longer practice the Catholic faith. The Catholic Church teaches that human life is intrinsically valuable and should be protected from conception to natural death; including the calls to end abortion, prevent euthanasia, stop the destruction of human embryos, and oppose cloning. Support state funding to abortion alternative providers. Support ban on research using fetal tissue acquired from abortion. Oppose all public funding to abortion providers, including funds for contraceptives. Support the protection and improvement of air, land, and water quality in Texas. Support efforts to reform the statute governing end-of-life care to involve patients, families and physicians in protecting life and dignity, while preserving ethical standards of care. Support programs to encourage adoption and to assist families with parenting support.

5 Second Sunday of Lent Page 5 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Blessed Sacrament was not reserved in church buildings in the first centuries of the church. In those early years, of course, people met in borrowed house churches, gathering on the Lord s Day for community, apostolic teaching, the breaking of the bread, and the prayers, as Acts of the Apostles tells us. Dispersed, people went their way into the workaday world until the next assembly. Weighing down their hearts was the absence of brothers and sisters, not only the sick, but those imprisoned for the faith. No wonder they developed a way of extending the food of the Holy Table to them. Forty years ago, every altar boy in training heard about Saint Tarcisius. He was a twelve-year-old boy at the time of intense persecution in fourth-century Rome. His community had begun to convey the consecrated bread from their Eucharist to those condemned to death or awaiting trial. Normally deacons did this, but on one occasion, it was necessary to send the boy to bear the holy mysteries to the prison. The legend says that he was an athlete, and was detained on the way by some playmates who wanted him to join in their game. When he refused, they demanded to know what he was carrying. The situation went from bad to worse, and he was badly beaten and died of his injuries. A hundred years later, a pope called him a second St. Stephen. In the nineteenth century, Cardinal Nicholas Wiseman of England wrote a novel in which he expanded the story and popularized it. By then, no one seemed to notice that this twelve-year-old was actually touching and ministering the Eucharist, unthinkable until recently. Scholars say the story rings true: the first reason for setting some Eucharistic bread aside was not adoration, but Communion of the sick. THE EXTRA EFFORT Saint Paul says we are all called to a holy life. We may think that Lent is only about fasting from food or abstaining from meat, but no. The Church encourages us to give more time to prayer, to offer personal service to needy people, and to give up something we really like, not something we ll never miss. The only thing we can t do is avoid Lent altogether. This would separate us from God and the community of faith, and seriously call our discipleship into question. These additional practices and penances should deepen our awareness of our daily gifts from our all-loving God. Shifting our attention away from ourselves frees us to offer our abilities and resources to God, to God s church, and to our world. This Lent let s count our blessings each and every one and ask God to conform our hears even more to the divine will. ALZHEIMER S EDUCATION AND SUPPORT PROGRAM Nestor H. Praderio, MD hosts an interactive learning experience for Caregivers of loved ones Alzheimer s Disease and Related Dementia. Sessions are held every fourth Wednesday of the month (January to October) at the Conference Center located behind the Doctor s Regional Hospital Emergency Room, 3315 S. Alameda. Sessions begin at 6:30 pm and complimentary refreshments are sponsored by our trusted community partners.
