Celebrating Easter without observing Lent and Holy is a little bit like that. Many of us cringe at having to relive and remember Good Friday. The cross forces us to realize what we have done to the Lord of the Universe. It demonstrates just how savage and cruel people can be. It reminds us of how much we have sinned and fallen short of God s glory. The cross is barbaric, brutal, and bloody, and it pushes us to be honest about ourselves. The fact is that we would just as soon skip all that ugliness and enjoy the celebration of Easter Sunday. The flowers, the Easter eggs, and the joyful hymns are a whole lot more fun. I m sure Jesus would have preferred the same, but for him, it was not an option. What we need to remember this Lent is that the empty tomb of Easter Day was only made possible by the Good Friday cross. And for us, it is only by the cross of Christ that we can be taken to the empty tomb. Jesus calls us to pick up our own cross, deny ourselves, and follow him. To follow him means we must be willing to go to the cross of Good Friday as well. Not just by observing the Holy liturgies, as important as they are, but by dying to ourselves each day and living in Christ. The cross means letting go of our own wants and wills and desires. It means putting God, and others, before ourselves. Standing before the cross of Christ on Good Friday, we are reminded of just how much we need a Savior. On Easter Sunday, we come to know it is Jesus who has the power to save. As we approach Holy, remember these words from Isaac Watts: When I survey the wondrous cross where the young Prince of Glory died; my riches gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride. This hymn captures the purpose of observing both Lent and Holy. Make plans to be a part of the Holy observances at St. Vincent s and allow the cross of Christ to take you to empty tomb, so that we can all celebrate in Spirit and in Truth the new life we have in Christ on Easter Day. - Dean Reed PALM SUNDAY AND HOLY WEEK SCHEDULE Palm Sunday, April 9th procession begins in the Courtyard & procession begins in front of the middle school Seder Meal at 7:00pm Monday, Tuesday Wednesday, Holy Communion at 7:00pm Maundy Thursday, April 13th, 7:30pm Good Friday Liturgy and Communion from the Pre-sanctified Gifts, 7:30pm Great Vigil of Easter, Saturday, April 15th, 8:00pm Bishop Jack L. 2 Page 2 Stewardship News For St. Vincent s, 2006 has been a spectacular year in terms of financial stewardship. It also important to remember that stewardship involves every aspect of our lives including our finances. We encourage everyone to try to be involved in at least one ministry or program in the parish. We are always looking for new ideas and new ministries and will encourage and support those programs that help further our mission of making Jesus known in all that we do. If you have an idea, or would like to get involved at St. Vincent s, please speak to one of the clergy. D evelopment M aintenance R epair The blue envelopes that come each month with the pledge envelopes are included for the purpose of supporting our facilities. The funds that come in each month are reserved for the Development, Maintenance, and Repair of our beautiful facilities and grounds. In the first three years, with support from the school, we have raised most of the funding to replace and upgrade our HVAC system. In the long term we hope to be able to use this fund to maintain our buildings and grounds thus freeing up operating funds for ministry and outreach. Our goal in the DMR Fund is to receive a minimum of $5 a month per household (the cost of one 20 ounce soft drink a week). Please consider giving to this fund on a permanent basis. Seder Meal, April 9th 7:00pm Sponsored by the EYC $10.00 per person Make reservations by calling the office Dinner with the Dean The Third Annual Dinner with the Dean and Dessert Auction will be held on Saturday, April 22nd beginning with a Social Hour at 6:00pm and Dinner, Asian Tapas theme, at 7:00pm. Following this will be the not-to-be-missed Dessert Auction and maybe another Hawaiian shirt? Proceeds will go to defray the cost of Dean Reed s trip to the General Convention in Columbus, Ohio in June. Please make plans to join us for the frivolity and fun as well as a superb dinner with friends. Ask a newcomer or join your longtime friends for an evening of good food, good company, and an abundance of laughter. Are you part of Dinners for Eight? Bring your group! The Missions/Outreach Committee will be taking reservations until April 9th. Call or Mary Elaine Midgley to make your reservation: mary_elaine@charter.net or ). While his feast is now on October 19 th and not in April at all, his story is so powerful, that it is worthy of mention. John de Brebeuf was a French Jesuit who was very sickly, especially in his younger years. Because of this fact, many had doubts as to whether he was called to be a priest. He was sent to be a missionary in northern Canada where the cold weather actually improved his health. He was very popular among the Indians and learned the Huron language. He even wrote a Catechism in Huron for them. Legend has it that he was the one who gave the popular Indian name, Lacrosse, its name, as it reminded him of a bishop s crosier (la crosse). In 1649, he was tortured to death by the Iroquois tribe, which made him a martyr. Unfortunately, by 1650 the Huron tribe was wiped out, along with all the work he put into that mission. All was not hopeless though, as what seemed like a total ecclesiastical disaster, served to motivate hundreds back in France to enter the ministry and to move many in Quebec to serve as missionaries. John de Brebeuf was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1930, for his devotion and faithfulness to God and His Church, even such devotion that cost him his life. We all are called to such levels of devotion to God, though it may not lead to 16 Coleman James Cripps 17 Marc Dunn, Daniel Frey, Meredith Molder 18 Saunsirai Angell 20 Matthew Rogers 21 Jensen Lucabaugh, Jessica McKenna 22 James Hartwell 23 Bertrand Collini, Barbara Hautanen, Carol Jack Son, Meredith Manson 24 Tristan Jesse, Leah Riley 25 Jim Cox, Diana Mueller, Michael Staggs 26 Diana Renee Keith 27 Phillip Croak 28 Susan Frey, Marion Midgley, Virginia Van Cleave 29 Andrew Denny 30 Keith Bell, Edith Fields, Vicki Renee Georgeff, Erin Michelle Keith, Hannah Richardson, Nicholas Robb, William Whitfill death. I know that many times we get so caught up in the business of life that it becomes hard to tell others about Christ, or to make a serious effort to love the unlovable, or to get involved in the life of the Church. Being busy and industrious is admirable, but like everything in life, there is excess. If your life is so busy that you cannot devote time to the Lord and His Church, then that is excessive and you should strive to change your lifestyle. Sometimes that is not entirely possible, as many people are simply trying to stay afloat. I have been there, I can assure you. Even still, we must tithe our time and energy to God, irregardless of what our lives are like. To neglect this is to neglect the worship of our Creator. The Gospel reading for St. John de Brebeuf s old feast day is Luke 16: The parable describes a rich man and a poor man. One lived a careless and selfish life, and the other did not. The rich man died and went to hell for his unrepentant lifestyle, while Lazarus was saved. Was it merely being rich that caused the one man to be separated from God? No, for it was clear by his plea with Abraham, that the rich man never repented of his sins and did not live a God-honoring life. What both St. John de Brebeuf and poor Lazarus can teach us is that in whatever station of life we find ourselves, and no matter what the situation is, we must be faithful to God, love others, serve His Church, and be repentant of our sins. Our age, our talents, our vocation, and our positions all are different, yet no person is less important than another in spreading and maintaining the Kingdom of Heaven. So as we leave this Lenten season and celebrate Easter, may we always keep in mind Christ s passion on the cross and His resurrection from the tomb, and may we live accordingly. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
