2 August 2010 Page 2 The Cathedral Extends a Hearty Welcome to New Staff Members As we prepare for a new school year and a new season of ministry and worship here at St. Vincent s, we do so by welcoming two new members to the Cathedral Staff. Deacon Andrew Petta and his wife Michelle began service here at St. Vincent s on July 1. Deacon Petta has begun a two year, diocesan curacy program and will assist in all the various forms of ministry both in the church and in our school. Mr. Peter Kane began work on June 1 taking on the role of Business Manager for the church and school after Ellen Reedy and her husband moved to Italy. If you have not had a chance to meet either the Pettas or Peter, please take some time to welcome them to the ministry of St. Vincent s Cathedral and remember to keep them in your prayers. Deacon Andrew and Michelle Petta God gave him a passion for the nations, which God has used over the years in Mexico, Ghana, and Nigeria. After finishing high school in 2003, he headed off to college in Nashville, Tennessee. There at Belmont University, he further discerned his calling by entering the college of business with an emphasis upon the music industry. God continued to lead him in the direction of the priesthood, and he switched to communications. In December of 2006, he graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree. Prior to heading to Nashotah House in the fall of 2007, he served the Lord abroad for a number of weeks in Nigeria. There he lived and worked under Archbishop Kwashi as he ministered among the people. Upon returning, he helped colead a youth group in Rowlett while they searched for a new full-time youth director. His three years at Nashotah House Theological Seminary in Wisconsin served to deepen his knowledge and understanding of the faith. Aside from his studies, those three years provided many other valuable opportunities. He served in a church about an hour away, teaching an adult confirmation class, preaching, and coordinating small groups for their Alpha course. He spent time one summer serving in Fort Worth at St. Anne s, learning about the daily life in a parish. During that same summer he had an opportunity to strengthen this relationships with the rest of the Anglican Communion and learn about the way forward by attending GAFCON in Jerusalem. He also served and chaired the mission committee at Nashotah House, which put on a church planting conference, mission conference, attended New Wineskins, and also coordinated foreign and local mission trips. He also spent one summer serving as a chaplain at Harris Methodist Hospital in Southwest Fort Worth. He was ordained a deacon last February prior to graduation in May. Shortly after making his way home, he married his lovely bride, Michelle, on June 4th. They had a few weeks to unpack boxes after the honeymoon before they both carried on their ministries. They are both very excited about this new chapter in their lives at St. Vincent s. Peter Kane Deacon Andrew Petta grew up in Fort Worth at Saint Andrew s Episcopal Church in downtown Fort Worth. It was there that he began to discern God calling him into the ministry around the young age of thirteen. Under the guidance and direction of his parents and mentors he grew in the faith during these formative years. Prior to entering Paschal High School, God further strengthened his calling when he accompanied the diocesan mission team to Malawi in During that short trip, Born and raised just outside of Plymouth, Massachusetts, Peter Kane came to Texas in 2005 in order to attend the University of Dallas. At the University, Peter studied English with a special focus on T.S. Eliot and James Joyce. Graduating Summa Cum Laude just last year, Peter worked as a Marketing Director for a Dallas Roofing Contracting Business before becoming the Business Administrator for St. Vincent s on June 1st. Peter is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and a High School Religious Education teacher at St. Luke s Community Catholic

Humbly I adore thee, Verity unseen, who thy glory hidest neath these shadows mean; lo, to thee surrendered, my whole heart is bowed, tranced as it beholds thee, shrined within the cloud. Taste and touch and vision to discern thee fail; faith, that comes by hearing, pierces through the veil. I believe whate er the Son of God hath told; what the Truth hath spoken, that for truth I hold. O memorial wondrous of the Lord s own death; living Bread that givest all thy creatures breath, grant my spirit ever by thy life may live, to my taste thy sweetness never failing give. Jesus, whom now hidden, I by faith behold, what my soul doth long for, that thy word foretold; face to face thy splendor, I at last shall see, in the glorious vision, blessed Lord, of thee. The Astute Anglicans are having great fun. We meet for a pot luck dinner on the third Friday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall. After dinner, we either play games, have a great discussion concerning whatever, and on occasions we go out to local events. We have been to hockey games, community theater, as well as musical events. If you have reached the age of Astuteness or are even approaching that age, come have an evening of great fun and fellowship. We do not check ID s or membership cards, bring a few. For additional information, call the church office or Rudy Jackson at Friday, August 20th Words: Att. St. Thomas Aquinas (1225?-1274) Fifth century mosaic of Loaves and Fishes from the floor of an ancient church and monastery at Tabgha on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee, near where Jesus is said to have fed the 5,000, thus initiating his Bread of Life discourse.

7 Page 7 THE DEACON Non-pledge contributions continued strong for the month of June. Pledges were down by almost $9,400 the summer doldrums have set in. Unfortunately, this is typical for the summer months. Parishioners go on vacation and lose track of making their pledges. We can help you with that get you set up on automatic debit that just deducts it right out of your account and you don t have to worry about writing checks or anything. Quick & easy! Expenses, as a total, were higher than budget and that was due to some quarterly payments and some unusual one-time expenses. So far this summer, St. Vincent s assisted a large family with rent for two months, groceries for a military family that are struggling and unexpected travel expenses for a member. This support came from the Benevolence Fund which is only funded by donations from parish members. If you would like to assist, please make your checks payable to St. Vincent s and mark the memo line Benevolence Fund. During these difficult economic times, we have many requests. Please consider helping out. Your financial support for all the various ministries and special funds and special needs is essential. We have had good support for the Mortgage Fund and continued support of the DMR fund and others. We need your continued support. The School is doing well and registrations for the year are growing. We still have much to do and miles to go. Our school is special and we must get the word out about the quality of the education that the children get by attending here. I talk to parents all the time whose kids graduated from St. Vincent s School and they tell me to a person what a great education they got and the special influence our school has had on them. We also offer CDs of Special Celebrations, Adult Forum, Basic Christianity and Select Classes. Flower Calendar Just a reminder to all who have donated altar flowers during the year and have not paid the $40 donation! Checks are made payable to St. Vincent s, marked FLOWERS, on the check. Are You Called To Be A Daughter? Of the King, that is. The Order of the Daughters of the King is a group of women striving to fulfill the promises of our Baptismal Covenant through the adoption of a Rule of Life. Every daughter pledges herself to a life-long program of prayer, service and personal evangelism, dedicated to the extension of Christ s Kingdom and to the strengthening of the spiritual life of her parish. Prospective members go through about an 8-week discernment study before being admitted to the order. St. Anne s Anglican Chapter of DOK at St. Vincent s adopted Leily, an orphan at Our Little Roses Orphanage in Honduras, several years ago as our on-going service and evangelism project. Leily is now 13. We support her financially and spiritually with our prayers. In addition to prayer, daughters also help with projects in our parish and community. We come together in a monthly meeting to unify our prayer efforts and in support of each other. A Discernment Process to become a Daughter of the King will begin in September, the Sunday after Rally Day. We will meet during the 11:30 a.m. service. If you are interested in becoming a daughter or would like more information about this, please contact Darlene Pruitt ( , darlenepruitt@att.net). Completing the discernment process does not obligate anyone to become a daughter if she is not led to do so. If you would like more information about daughters, please feel free to pick up a brochure in the Narthex or visit with any daughter. You can identify us by the cross we wear. Rio Mambo Tex Mex y Mas Take your bulletin to Rio Mambo on Sundays. They donate 10% of the bill back to St. Vincent s. And, the food is EXCELLENT! Cover: Titian s Assunta ( ), possibly the most famous rendition of the Assumption of St. Mary in Western Art.

9 Page 9 THE DEACON Every Christian has, at some point, wrestled in prayer against the illness of a friend, loved one, or themselves. We long to witness healing such as Christ himself performed when He walked this earth. Christ said that we would do greater things than He did; but we were never meant to do them alone, and we need the power of the Holy Spirit for healing and miracles. It is because of this, Dean Reed is revitalizing the Order of St. Luke the Physician here at St. Vincent s. The OSL is a Christian organization devoted to bringing the healing ministry of Jesus Christ to all who need physical, spiritual and emotional healing. Jesus Christ lives today, and He still possesses all power on earth as in Heaven. His desire for us is wholeness and health. He uses many means for healing. Some are spiritual such as prayer, faith, and laying on of hands. Some are medical such as medicine, surgery and psychology. We must be supportive of one another in the various ways God chooses to heal. After Labor Day we will begin a study of the twenty-six healing miracles of Jesus. As an associate member, you will grow through scriptural training and personal prayer. You will become equipped to pray for those whom Christ brings to you who are experiencing sickness and emotional distress. And, at the end of the study, if you wish, you can become a full member in the Order of St. Luke. The most exciting part of being a part of the Order of St. Luke is the deep, rich relationship you will develop with Jesus Christ. By studying Him intently, you get to know him on a new, personal level that will change your life. You cannot be intimate with Him and expect your life to remain status quo. If you have wanted to learn more about Jesus, if you have wanted to go further in your prayer life, if you have a desire to make a difference, the OSL could be for you. For more information, you can talk to Dean Reed, or Miche lle Briggs ( ), or go to Motto and Logo Blue is the color of healing. The emblem of the order is a cross within a circle, which together make an acrostic. The motto is in Latin: JESU ESTO MIHI JESUS - DUX - LUX - REX - LEX Roughly translated this means: "O Jesus, be to me my Savior (Healer), my Leader, my Light, my King, and my Law." Life's greatest adventure awaits you when Jesus Christ becomes your Leader, Light, King, Law, and Savior-Healer. According to tradition, this cross was found in the catacombs of Domitillain Rome during the second century. It is the prayer of a Roman nobleman. The story is that this Roman officer lost his wife who had been the guide and inspiration of his life. He felt the light of his life had been extinguished. Restless and distraught, he wandered this way and that. Then he heard the Glad Tidings of the Christian Gospel and found in the catacombs this prayer inscribed on the wall. He accepted Christ and made the prayer the Rule of his life. The light of Christ shone into his life with healing and integration. He lived a long and useful life thereafter. Feast of St. Mary The Virgin This important feast will be observed on Monday evening, August 16, at 7:00 p.m. in the church. The women of the Cathedral Choir will offer music, including a setting of Ave Maria by McNeil Robinson. Preview of Fall Musical Events Save these dates in your calendar! With lots of help from lots of volunteers, we had a cosmic adventure praising God with over 80 children. The children learned that before anything existed, God was there and He created everything in the universe. The kids had a great time in fun activities and had a great dinner each evening. VBS was great!

I know you have fun collecting the bears and we certainly have fun delivering them to each of our newly admitted children. The children are told that they have someone praying for them that they do not know. It is really comforting for the parents and other family members to know this too. On a difficult day, to think someone is thinking of your child, praying for them to get well is a powerful message. You have brought so much happiness to so many children. If you can imagine them smiling as they receive their bears to play with, pray and finally take home, you would get a wonderful feeling. During the summer months alone, we give out 40 to 70 bears a day. To all of you at St. Vincent's, your kindness is very much appreciated.
