1 This Year s Facilitators For 2014 St. Paul s own Amma Josephine Robertson and Erin Busby are back again to lead the retreat together! Amma Jo s first official St. Paul s duty was to attend the 2012 Women s Retreat and lead us through the Eucharist. With two years of St. Paul s under her belt, she is excited to talk about taking care of ourselves so we can tend to others. Erin Busby is the Director of Youth and Outreach Ministries, and has been with St. Paul s for six years. She is looking forward to the sixth annual Women s Retreat and leading the women through discussions and activities this year! 2 W hat is whole hearted living? And why does it matter? As women we spend most of our lives taking care of those we love. But, in order to truly care for others we must first tend to ourselves. 3 Saint Paul s Episcopal Church Waco, Texas Tidings March 9, 2014 Proper Liturgy for Ash Wednesday with Imposition of Ashes Wednesday, March 5 7 a.m., 12:10 p.m. and 7 p.m. Liturgical changes for Lent The Church invites you, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting and selfdenial; and by reading and meditating on God s Holy Word. These words from the Book of Common Prayer, page 265, summarize the spiritual task of Christians during the seasons of Lent. To help with this you will notice a few changes in our liturgy to mark the season of Lent. Color: The color changes from the green of the season after Epiphany to the Purple of Lent. We veil all symbols of the Resurrection to turn our attention to the Passion of Christ. Silence: We invite you to enter in silence. We will observe a period of silence following each reading and the homily. The Great Litany is used on the First Sunday in Lent. The Penitential Order will be used on the other Sundays in Lent. The Kyrie will be used at all services. Eucharistic Prayer C (9 o clock): This Eucharistic prayer has a more penitential tone to it than the others. Agnus Dei (said) at 9 o clock. Agnus Dei (sung) at 11 o clock. Prayer of Humble Access at 11 o clock. Solemn Prayer over the People will take the place of the Blessing. Who Will Watch With Me One Hour? As Jesus prayed in the garden of Gethsemane on the night before his crucifixion he asked his disciples to wait and watch with him, to keep awake. Each gave in at last to their fear and grief and escaped into sleep. When Jesus discovered his disciples sleeping he asked them why they could not keep watch with him even one hour. It is from that anguished question that the Garden Vigil began. The Garden Vigil (sometimes called the Altar of Repose) is a cherished tradition by many Christians. The vigil spans the hours between the end of the Maundy Thursday service through dawn on Good Friday. A garden altar is set up in a quiet spot; at St. Paul s it will be in the Chapel. The altar is decorated with greenery and flowers in remembrance of that first garden, and a small amount of reserve sacrament from the Maundy Thursday Eucharist is placed on the garden altar. Candles are burned throughout the night, symbolic of both Christ s presence in the Eucharist, and our vigil with Him. All those who would like to wait and watch, come and go throughout that long night, spending an hour (or more) in quiet prayer and meditation at the Garden Altar. On the 6th and 13th of April we will post a sign up sheet in the Narthex; the sign up is to ensure there will be at least one person at the altar throughout the entire vigil, but there is no limit on how many people may sign up for any particular time slot. (You may also call the church office during those weeks to have your name added to the sign up sheet.) Security will be provided in both the parking lot and at the chapel entrance to ensure all feel safe and comfortable taking part in this deeply meaningful expression of Christian devotion. Prayer and meditation resources will be provided at the vigil altar to help you with your time of waiting and watching. We hope you will join your clergy and lay leaders in waiting and watching with Christ for just one hour. Amma Jo

Christian Formation For All Ages (Sunday School) 11:00 A.M. Holy Eucharist Rite I COMMUNION INSTRUCTION The Eucharist is the meal for the family of God. We are made members of this family at our baptism. Someone once said that he would not want his son to remember a time when he felt excluded from the Lord s Table. Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it. Mark 10:15 Our bishop Andy Doyle had these words to share about children and the Eucharist. This powerful image of Jesus, placing children at the center of his ministry in Mark s Gospel, is a reminder that we are to allow children to encounter the risen Christ, and that we learn through their encounter so that we may see the kingdom of God and enter into it. I believe that this is simply a passage about the grace of God and how it is purely by God s grace that we, no matter our age or experience, come to know God in the person of Jesus. The children AND parents together are invited to participate in Communion instruction this Lenten season as part of the Wednesday Evening Program. Classes will be on March 26th, April 2nd and April 9th from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. Making the connection with Eucharist and joyous meals that we celebrate and begin to understand participation in Holy Communion as a real meal. Christians remember the Last Supper - learn the origin of the Liturgy of the Lords Supper and hear Biblical references to it. People celebrate the Eucharist - church manners Please contact Lisa St. Romain with questions about children and Holy Communion or if you and your family wish to participate in Communion Instruction. For all ministry submissions (25-50 words max.), contact Joanna in the church office, , joanna@stpaulswaco. org. Please Joanna if you would like to receive the Tidings e-newsletter (PDF).
