Weekday Schedule Morning Prayer Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday :00am Wednesday & Saturday.... 8:40am Holy Eucharist Monday, Friday :00pm Tuesday...6:30am Wednesday :00am Thursday... 7:00pm Saturday.... 9:00am Evening Prayer Daily (except Thursday).....5:00pm Thursday :40pm Confession Saturdays at 8:00a.m.-8:30a.m. (or by appointment) All weekday services take place in St. Mary s Chapel St. Vincent s uses the 1979 Book of Common Prayer as its standard form of worship I hope that you feel the same excitement that I do to be a member of the St. Vincent s community at this time. God is doing many incredible things in our life together, and I want to draw your attention to a few important events that are approaching. To kick things off, Thursday, May 1, we will be celebrating the Feast of the Ascension. The Ascension, of course, takes place forty days after Easter, and is the day when the Lord completes the cycle of redemption as he returns in glory to the right hand of the Father. What is so crucial is that in that moment humanity for the first time enters the Godhead and by virtue of this, the Most High God knows us intimately. There will be a Mass at 6:30 P.M. on that day followed by a potluck dinner. Just a few days later we will do something at St. Vincent s that I do not believe that we have ever done before: we will be hosting an Archbishop of the Anglican Communion. On Sunday, May 4, The Most Rev. Gregory Venables, the Primate and Archbishop of the Southern Cone, will be with us at the 9:00 and 11:15 Masses. This will be an important day in our history as a community, and I dare say, a great day to invite friends. Some have asked, what is an Archbishop? Well, an Archbishop is not only a Bishop of a Diocese (just like Bishop Iker is the Bishop of Fort Worth) but also has the extra responsibility of overseeing neighboring dioceses. So, in this case, Archbishop Venables is the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Argentina, based in Buenos Aires, but also has the responsibility of overseeing the work in the other dioceses throughout the Province of the Southern Cone, which covers most of South America. Additionally, he serves as one of the thirtyeight Primates of the Anglican Communion, which lead and guide the souls of over 75 million people throughout the world. Lastly, on Sunday, May 11, we will be celebrating Pentecost Sunday, the day when the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Apostles empowering them to spread the Gospel throughout the world. We are expecting a good amount of baptisms on this day, which is a sure sign that God is working among us to bring more and more souls into His Kingdom a very exciting thing, indeed. Please mark your calendars for these important events, and many more highlighted elsewhere in this Deacon, in the month of May.
2 Page 2 DEACON MAY: Friday, May 16th, 6:00 p.m. Potluck & 7:00 p.m. leave for the Artisan Theater to see *"The Foreigner" a comedy * Jerry Post has bought 15 tickets for the Small Group Rate of $10.00 each. Sunday, May 4, 2008 Immediately following the 11:15 service (Approximately 12:30) St. Vincent s Cathedral Parish Hall Hosted by St. Vincent s Cathedral Social Committee You are welcome and encouraged to wear your spring hats! As I begin my 7 th year of ministry at St. Vincent s and 12 th overall, I have planned a sabbatical this summer which I have been coordinating with the vestry and diocese for the last six months. During this time, I will be attending a three week course in Rome, sponsored by St. George s College, Jerusalem, that looks at Christianity in Rome from 1 st century to the present. I am also attending GAFCON which is a ten day pilgrimage in, and around, Jerusalem. In addition, I am taking two weeks of family vacation and then will conclude with a family retreat and self study on congregational development, leadership, and ministry in large congregations. I will be away from the middle of May until the end of July, returning to do a few weddings in between my trips. Please keep us in your prayers during this time. While we are away, the Cathedral clergy, vestry and staff will be available for all things pastoral, temporal and administrative. St. Vincent s Choir will sing the season s final service of Evensong at 6pm on Trinity Sunday, May 18, concluding the service with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The music of the service will include Psalm 112, sung to a chant by Ivor Atkins, Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in B Minor by T. Tertius Noble, O Salutaris by Georges Aubanel, and Tantum ergo by Sydney Nicholson. Featured as the anthem will be Palestrina s Sanctus ( Holy, holy, holy ) from Missa Ave Maria. Upcoming events Saturday, May 3 rd Open meeting of clergy & convention delegates with Archbishop Gregory Venables (in the gym) 10:00 AM to Noon Sunday, May 4 th Archbishop Gregory Venables We will be hosting The Most Rev. Gregory Venables, the Archbishop of the Anglican Province of the Southern Cone. Archbishop Venables will be our preacher at both the 9:00am & 11:15am Masses and will also lead the adult forum. This is an incredible honor, and we hope all will join us to roll out the red carpet for him on this important day in our history. Saturday, May 10 th Intercessory Prayer Workshop Saturday, May 23 rd - 26 th Memorial Weekend Parish Campout Register now for the inaugural campout at Camp Crucis in Granbury, Texas just outside of Fort Forth. Contact Amy Haney The Organ Dedication on April 13 was a splendid affair from beginning to end. Following the singing of the hymn Praise to the Lord, the almighty ( join the great throng, psaltery, organ and song, sounding in glad adoration ), Bishop Iker blessed the new additions in front of a congregation of 250, a number of whom were organ aficionados and music-lovers from throughout the metroplex. My long-time friend, the phenomenal George Baker, played a stunning recital that showed every facet of the instrument, particularly the new Positiv division, and brought a standing ovation. The air was exuberant in the Parish Hall reception, where a parade of smiling Women s Fellowship members poured out of the kitchen replenishing the trays another example of St. Vincent s famous hospitality. Roy Redman, the organ builder, said he had never seen such beautiful food! I would like to offer my personal thanks for all who made the evening possible: the generous anonymous donor and all the other donors who helped buy mixture pipes and put the finishing touches on the dedication festivities; Liz Ward and all the Women s Fellowship; Spring Chaltas for formatting the handsome brochure (donors, if you haven t received a brochure, please see me or Ron Turner); members of the Cathedral Choir for reception setup and cleanup of the Parish Hall; the Organ Committee Thom Murrell, Raul Ortiz, Robert Boyer, George Midgley, and most especially the chairman, Ron Turner. Ron took almost daily photos of the organ construction, did all the publicity, printed the flyers, took a day off to assist the professional photographer recommended by Victor Blood, was responsible for brochure content, supervised setup and breakdown of the reception, and dozens of other things. It couldn t have happened without his care. I will treasure the evening as a memorable St. Vincent s Parish event, and a very grand occasion. Barbara Burton
4 Page. 4 DEACON New Look for Cathedral s Website The Cathedral s website has a new look and feel! Check it out! The best new feature you will see is the list of upcoming events down the right side no more searching for what is going on in the parish. Need to contact the Cathedral office? Simply click Contact above the banner and complete the form. This is an easy way to add someone to the prayer list, ask a question, or make a comment. While everyone will enjoy the new look, the biggest advantages to the new design are behind the scenes. Site administration is now a much easier process for managing the content. Have a question, suggestion, or comment about the website? Send an to site administrator Ron Turner (turner.rj0815@flash.net). Cathedral s Distribution Lists The Cathedral s distribution list is used to communicate with members of the parish on events, especially deaths and last minute activities. Mrs. Virginia Butchard, our parish secretary, now disseminates information via the distribution list. If you are currently not receiving notices, please send an request to her (vbutchard@sves.org) requesting the addition of your name to the list. Also, it s important that you notify her when your address changes to ensure you continue receiving notices. Thank You! SVWF web-page: Go to the church website and check out the Women s Fellowship link. You will find information on upcoming events, prayers and praises, bible study blog and more. Silver/Gold Brunch Our annual Silver and Gold Brunch will be held on Sunday May 4 th at 12:30. This is a wonderful opportunity to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. Please join us in Parish Hall following the 11:15 service. God s Peace, SVWF Co-Presidents Lynn Kalbfleisch lvkalb@sbcglobal.net Julie Molder jkmolder@sbcglobal.net I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to everyone who worked to ensure the Dedication of the Organ and Recital went off flawlessly. To Roy Redman Pipe Organ Builders for their wonderful expertise in organ design and construction! To the members of the organ committee for their efforts in helping with the installation! To Spring Chaltas for her tireless work on the program booklet! To Barbara Burton for her support and guidance throughout the entire project! To George Baker for his exquisite talent! To all who contributed financially to the completion of the organ! To the members of the Cathedral Choir for setup and cleanup of the Parish Hall! And finally, to the wonderful ladies of St. Vincent s Women s Fellowship for hosting a very elegant reception. There were many visitors to the Cathedral who commented during the evening on the wonderful hospitality by the members of the parish. Thank you everyone! Ron Turner Chairman of the Organ Committee

Herrbold. A long-time member of St. Vincent s Order of the Daughters of the King, our Mother passed away due to natural causes at the age of 85 on April 13, with our family present at her bedside. During the recent days following her services held at St. Vincent s on April 16, it has become abundantly clear how many lives our Mother touched as well as how very blessed we were and are to be her children and family. An avid and lifelong gardener, a fund has been established in her name to support the prayer garden memorial at St. Vincent s Cathedral
