The grass is growing, the flowers are blooming, the temperatures are warming, and Jesus is risen! All of these are unmistakable signs that spring has arrived. This spring we ve celebrated a particularly beautiful Holy Week, & Easter by taking our wonderful St. Philip s community out into the wider community. During Holy Week we participated in the community worship services which were hosted this year by Harrodsburg Christian Church.. On Monday in Holy Week we brought food big thanks to everyone who helped with this: it was abundant and delicious!) and welcomed Little Zion Baptist Church from Burgin. Pastor Phil Yates and his congregation brought wonderful music and a great message. (Throughout the rest of the week this series hosted a wide range of churches from all over the county: St. Andrew Roman Catholic; Hopewell Baptist; St. Barnabas Church of the Encourager and others.) Inside St. Philip s, we welcomed our neighbors from St. Peter AME, who joined us for the Maundy Thursday service. Pastor William Jenkins preached powerfully (Proud Hearts and Dirty Feet) and members of his congregation joined us for worship and knelt with us at the altar. On Good Friday we gathered with two other congregations (Harrodsburg Community Church and St. Andrew Roman Catholic) to pray the Stations of the Cross through the downtown. We carried our own large, wooden cross up to the fountain on Main Street and joined about 30 other folks for prayer and remembering Christ s agonizing walk to the cross for us. On Sunday, April 23, one of our vergers, Leonard Mackey, represented St. Philip s at the Installation Service for Pastor Gaye Haralu. Gaye is Harrodsburg Christian Church s new senior pastor. Leonard was present in the service, giving Gaye a stole, blessed in Israel for her to wear as she leads worship, on behalf of our congregation. This was exceptionally well-received and when I arrived later I was told how welcome this gesture is. Sunday (Kids in Church) PARISH ACTIVITIES Service at Old Fort Harrod on Sunday, May 21st On May 21st (weather permitting) we will gather for worship at 10 am near the Osage Orange tree near the front of Old Fort Harrod State Park. (If the weather is bad, we ll gather for services at St. Philip s.) The worship will be our regular Sunday morning worship (including Eucharist), just adapted a bit for the change in surroundings. There will be special music! This is a great time to bring a friend to a St. Philip s Service! Please let us know if your child would like to participate during service! 2nd Sunday Ms. Beth (Godly Play) Ms. Nicole (4th-6th) 3rd Sunday Teacher T.B.A. 4th Sunday Ms. Beth (Godly Play) Ms. Nicole (4th-6th) Nursery is available every Sunday A message from the Youth Leaders: Nicole and Beth are so grateful for the support the children who attend Saint Philip s receive from our church family. So many resources, so many gifts to share and it shows! Thank you, Diana Foreman, for sharing your teaching gifts most recently when Nicole and Beth are not on the schedule. Thank you to Margo for being a solid and nurturing presence for the younger children in the nursery. It is important for our St. Philip s families to know there are many people who care and it is abundant in many ways. Speaking of abundance, our Easter egg contributors made sure nary a basket was lacking! A fund raiser of selling homemade soup in the Parish House on March 26 went well with a total of close to $300 raised. That s a lot of dough for some yummy soup! This money is going toward the summer campers costs of which five of our youth will be attending! Cathedral Domain operates excellent summer camps for all ages under the governance of our Diocese of Lexington. Two of our senior high youth, Roman and Cannon will be counselors as well! So much to be thankful for! The first Sunday of the month is KICS (kids in church Sunday). What a blessing to have the youth serve and worship in church or even hear the exclamation of little Roman s Alleluia! Thank you to Leonard and Vicky Mackey who have guided and inspired them in the rituals of our service. The second and fourth Sundays, the youth are split according to their ages between Nicole, Beth and Margo teaching during the service and returning for Communion. There is always a need for a person to teach the third Sunday. This can be a craft lesson or one from a planned curriculum Nicole uses. Feel free to let Nicole or Beth know as the Spirit nudges. It is an additional layer to our youth s absorption of that St. Philip s love! The Mid-week services are on Wednesdays 5/3, 10 & 17th at 6:30 PM. The Mid-week service will break for summer and resume in the fall. This is a casual interactive service. Fr. Peter has a short sermon followed by a time to re lect, respond and discuss. Daughters of the King will meet May 7th after church. Regular meetings are held on the first Sunday following church service. The next meeting of the ECW (Episcopal Church Women) will be on Saturday, June 10th at 11:30 AM for lunch at the Old Owl Tavern! Special thanks to Pat & Carroll Perkins, Kenn Klun, Kristie Jones, Chris McCoy and Katie Lay for continuing to pick up food from God s Pantry at the Methodist Church. The guests at the meal also go home with unprepared food to have later. The next meals will be on May 25th and June 22nd at 4:45 PM. Anyone who would like to pitch in and enjoy the fun can call Katie Lay at There s always a place for you. Luncheon to benefit Community Meal is planned for Friday, June 9th! Rejoicing in our Amazing Community (cont. from Page 1) Someone once asked me: Why reach out? Why interact with other churches like this? Aren t we good enough on our own? My answer to this comes from Acts chapter 2, the Pentecost story (Spoiler Alert: this year Pentecost is Sunday, June 4. It will be a wonderful celebration with the Gospel read in new ways: you ll want to be there & experience it!). At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit first fell on the new Christians, transforming them and flowing out of them in marvelous ways: When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. When the Holy Spirit appeared, it was clear that God wanted a variety of gifts and languages to reach a wide variety of people. God didn t make everyone speak the same langue: God revels in variety and sent the Spirit powerfully to do unique work among a vast number of people. Our wider community is a bit like that: a wide range of people in a wide range of life situations. As churches we believe the same, basic things about Christianity. Where we differ is in the details and it is in this beautiful, bewildering variety of details that the Spirit dances and powerful work is done. When we reach out to other congregations, we are able to encourage growth, strengthen relationships, and truly be the face, hands, & heart of Jesus to our neighbors. There are a lot of small churches in our county and simply showing up to say: We re here and we care provides a tremendous boost to their spirit. I feel this as well whenever others do the same for us. Though we may speak slightly different worship languages, we are all members of Christ s One Body. The Apostle Paul said it extremely well: For just as the body is one and has many members so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body (I Corinthians ) We are called to encourage and build up the body. When we do this, not only are we a blessing to others, but God sees and blesses us in return. St. Philip s is a blessing to me; I am energized and delighted as I go with you in this work of encouraging and watching God s people do great things across our community! With Joy, Father Peter ASH WEDNESDAY submitted by Leonard Mackey The first day of Lent, the Wednesday of the seventh week before Easter. This provides for forty (40) days of fasting and penitence before Easter, Sundays are not considered fast days as they are celebrations to the Lord. The day derives its name from the ceremonial imposition of ashes on the foreheads of worshippers in the Liturgy of the day. The ceremony itself consists of a blessing or prayer over the ashes, traditionally made by burning the palms from the previous year s Palm Sunday, which are a symbol of purification and penitence followed by imposition on the forehead accompanied by the words, Remember that you are dust and unto dust you shall return (Genesis 3:19), a reminder of human mortality or all exhortation to faithfulness to the Gospel or both. In the Prayer Book, Ash Wednesday is mentioned as a special fast day along with Good Friday. Other references to the words of Genesis 3:19 are: Genesis 2:7, Psalm , Job 34:15, Psalm , Ecclesiastics 3:20 and 12:7. On Sunday, March 19 th I had the opportunity to be a part of the Children s School lesson teaching them about the meaning of Ash Wednesday and Lent and burning palm crosses for them and placing ashes upon their foreheads. This experience was very meaningful to me. I hope that I can be a part of their class again in the near future.
