From the Vicarage No doubt some of us will still remember the first few times we rode a bicycle on our own (without stabilisers) and the feeling of excitement mixed with a sense of foreboding. The excitement was in doing something you had never done before, the foreboding was in the almost certain knowledge that sooner rather than later your sense of balance would desert you and you would fall off. However, as your technique improved every time you rode your bike you could think back to the bruised knees of those early days and know that it had been worth it. When Jesus appeared to his disciples after his rising from the dead, they were overjoyed to see him and yet they could not help but notice that he still carried the wounds he suffered at his crucifixion. They saw the marks of the nails etc. and they would have remembered how they had abandoned him at the time when he needed them most. But Jesus did not blame or scold them, he simply wished them peace. What was done was done. He wanted them to have peace of mind, concentrate on the future, and not dwell on the past. From the moment we were born, life has been a constant learning process. Over the years we have all had opportunities to learn new skills. When we attempt something unfamiliar, or complicated, we have to make allowances for the mistakes we shall make in the process. If we are seriously committed to what we have begun, we may have to allow ourselves some extra time and patience until, gradually, we are able to move forwards from "beginner" to "proficient" and maybe even to "expert" status. The strange thing is that we do not always make allowances for ourselves or for others as we learn the biggest and most important lesson that will ever challenge us: how to live as a fallible human being in a world that is itself far from perfect. Everybody stumbles and makes mistakes along the way, so it is important that we should not feel discouraged and give up the effort. God knows that we are learners in life. He sees the "L" plates which are invisible to us and to others. He makes excuses for us when we fall short and asks just one thing of us: that we "try, try and try again". At Pentecost Jesus again tells us to be at peace, however battered and bruised we may feel at times. We are still learning to be like him and God makes allowances for that by sending us the Spirit of love and encouragement to help us make a fresh start at all those times when that is just what we need. Yours ever, Colin Wilson (Revd.)
Church Wardens Notes It s all happening at St Mary s in June! On Monday the 4 th, the scaffolders arrive to start erecting the scaffolding around the tower and spire; this will take about two weeks and then work will start on stripping and recovering the spire with new oak tiles. It is expected that the work will be on going until October, so apologies in advance for increased vehicle activity around the church gates. The interior of the church will not be affected and services will continue as usual, as will the Flower Festival. FLOWER FESTIVAL SATURDAY 30T" JUNE AND SUNDAY 1ST JULY to 5.00 pm BOTH DAYS We are looking forward to our Flower Festival once again and our chosen theme for this year is "SIMPLE PLEASURES". Apart from the enjoyment of decorating the church with flowers, this is one of our fund raising events. All the money raised goes towards repairing and improving the church. As you will appreciate, the work currently being undertaken on the spire will be very costly, and, once that is completed, we have to turn our attention to the nave roof which is no longer water tight! We sincerely hope that, as in previous years, we can rely on the generous support of families and friends to make donations towards the cost of the flowers in memory of a loved one or to celebrate a special occasion. The arrangers are an enthusiastic bunch and l am sure will put on a good show as usual. Dedications and donations (cash or cheques made payable to Wethersfield PCC) can be handed to Sarah Pilgrim, Eve Newell or Ben Walmsley - see the inside of front of this magazine for our contact details. All will be acknowledged in church over the weekend. We would also welcome cakes for the Cake Stall and raffle prizes. Saturday: Cake stall, Raffle and Bric a Brac Sunday afternoon: Music arranged by Jessie Tabor" Sunday evening: "Festival Songs of Praise" at 6.30
We invite you to choose a hymn for the Service. Please let Sarah Pilgrim or Eve Newell have details of your choice by Friday 22 June. Best of all, do come and join in the singing. There will be a variety of refreshments available throughout the Festival. PLEASE COME AND JOIN US OVER THE WEEKEND and help us to keep this important building safe and sound for future generations. Many thanks to John Barker for fixing the garden seat kindly given to the church by Alma White when she left Wethersfield to be near her daughter in Hertfordshire." EN IMPORTANT INFORMATION! As from Wednesday 6 th June 2018 the Freshwell Health Centre will deliver medication to their regular patients at the Village Hall. This will be done at the new time of 1.45 pm until 2.00 pm From Wednesday 25 th July 2018 until Wednesday 5 th September 2018 this will take place in the Church during the temporary closure of the Village Hall Any queries should be made to Freshwell Health Centre on

Wethersfield Floral Art As a group we had an outing to the National Flower Show last month to Hylands House in Chelmsford, thoroughly enjoyed by all. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 27 June, when we have two ladies from Thaxted Flower Club, Iris and Jane, coming to demonstrate for us. They came to our Group a couple of years ago, and this time the title of their evening is 'Take Two'. We know they will provide us with a lovely evening, with fantastic arrangements which we can all win in the end-of-night raffle. Please feel free to join us in the Village Hall at 8.00 pm, 4 on the evening for guests, coffee and cake included! NEWS FROM THE VILLAGE HALL It will not be long now before the Hall closes for a month and the builders move in. This will be on the 21 st July. It doesn't seem possible that almost a year has gone by since we were in the same situation with the Small Hall. The Small Hall has been enjoyed by many and we look forward to celebrating completion of the Main Hall and I think that will be a time for Wethersfield to celebrate! First though, there are still things to do and things which will happen! I know there is a separate notice about the issuing of medication in Wethersfield but because it will be such a big change one can't mention it enough. As from the 6 th June 2018 those people who have received their medicines at the shop will need to come to the Village Hall. Another change will be the time. This will now be from 1.45pm until 2.00 pm but still on a Wednesday. As I have said the hall will be closed during August and during that month this will take place in the church. Along with the staff at Freshwell we feel it is vitally important that there should be continuity and indeed that you are extremely important too!
Up until now our fund raising has been mainly Rock and Roll but during June we bring a delightful change entitled Music for a summer's evening played by the talented ensemble the East Anglian Single Reed Choir. Their repertoire is an eclectic mix of light classical and the lighter styles of jazz and folk music conducted by Anthony Bailey. There will be a bar with Prosecco and Pimms available along with strawberries and cream, a truly summer combination. Please come along and enjoy something new and different. Tickets are and available from Mair (me!) on or wethersfieldvillagehallcio@gmail.com. This starts at 6.00 pm on Sunday 24 th June. In September we will introduce you to the new look hall by organising a quiz, always a favourite. The date for this is to be confirmed. October sees the official opening of the new hall, we hope as many of you as can make it will come along and see what we have been up to all this time and how we have spent the money contributed by the people of Wethersfield and by grant aid. Again, date to be confirmed. It's a lovely evening as I write this, all doors and windows open and still plenty of sunshine. I hope the sun keeps shining for us all so that we can enjoy a wonderful summer. With thanks to you all for your kindness and support. 14 WETHERSFIELD RED ONION SHORTCAKE Description: This is a traditional recipe for a rich, savory shortcake that became popular in Wethersfield (the one in Connecticut, USA!) in the 19 th century: Ingredients: Crust 2 cups flour 4 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 6 tablespoons butter 1/2-3/4 cup buttermilk Filling: 8-10 medium onions 6 tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon white pepper 2 eggs, slightly beaten Directions: Preheat oven to 450 F. For the crust: mix flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Work in the butter until the mixture looks like coarse meal. Slowly add the buttermilk, mixing until the mixture forms a somewhat sticky dough. Turn onto a floured board and knead briefly until smooth. Line a 9- inch springform pan with the dough and chill until ready to use. For the filling: Sauté onions in butter until transparent. Spread them over the dough. Mix the sour cream and seasonings with beaten eggs, blending thoroughly. Pour the mixture over the onions. Bake for 10 minutes, then reduce the oven to 350 F and bake 45 minutes more. Slice in wedges. Serves 4 as a main dish or 6-8 as a vegetable dish.
