CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK begins today Sun 29 th Jan. It celebrates the important role that our schools play in the local community & parish. It also recognises the great work being carried out in all our schools at preparing our young people for life. During this week we pray God s blessing on all who form the school communities as pupils, parents, teachers, staff, and Boards of Management. Thanks to all our schools for the very positive contribution they make to our community. FRIDAY 3 rd FEB: FEAST OF ST. BLAISE: An Armenian bishop martyr of the fourth century. Tradition states that he was a physician before becoming a bishop. Since the eight century he has been venerated as patron of those who suffer from diseases of the throat. So throats will be blessed after all Masses on Friday. PARTICIPATION IN THE LITURGY: It was a Month s Mind Mass and the parish priest expected the farmer in the sacristy to hand him an envelope with the usual stipend and thank him before departing. However, the man appeared a little uncertain. Instead of an envelope he held Euro notes rolled up in his fist and he looked quizzically at the priest. How much do we owe you for the Mass, Father? he asked; then, after a slight pause, he added, we did the readings ourselves.

2 GLENCORRIB KILROE SENIOR CITIZENS PARTY was held last Sunday afternoon. It was a full flight 110 between flight crew and passengers sat down for dinner. Maureen Sheridan was the captain as usual and she did an excellent job. She phoned me during the week to make sure we thanked all those who showed up at the meetings and on Saturday to prepare the hall and all the additional crew that showed up on Sunday to help out. We wish to thank the band, musicians and all the entertainers. There are too many to thank individually, so a big bualadh bos to all to helped out. And last but not least, many thanks to all our senior citizens who attended and enjoyed the meal and entertainment afterwards. The above photos courtesy of Liam Donoghue includes some of those who stayed on till the late hours. SOME NATIONAL PROVERBS FUNNY QUOTES: To know the road ahead, ask those coming back. FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF JESUS IN THE TEMPLE - CANDLEMAS Candlemas is celebrated on February 2 nd on the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple where in accordance to Jewish custom, Mary presented Jesus to God at the Temple in Jerusalem after observing the traditional 40-day period of purification (of mothers) following his birth. According to a New Testament gospel, a Jewish man named Simeon held the baby in his arms and said that he would be a light for the Gentiles (Luke 2:32). It is for this reason that this event is called Candlemas. Tradition arose then where Christians have candles blessed on this day to be used in the church or at home. Some churches even a candle-lit procession that before the Mass. Hence, the name Candlemas - it is Old English which translates into modern English as two words candle and Mass, or the Mass of the Candles. Candlemas occurs at a period between the December solstice and the March equinox, and so many people traditionally marked that time of the year as winter s halfway point while waiting for the spring. Some hold that some of Candlemas activities stem from pagan observances such as Imbolc, a Gaelic festival, or the Roman feast of Lupercalia. An early writing dating back to around 380 AD mentioned that a feast of the Presentation occurred in a church in Jerusalem. It was observed on February 14 th. The feast was observed in the Western Latin Church on February 2 nd in regions where Christ's birth was celebrated on December 25 th. It is not unusual for emerging groups to use local traditions and culture to express and define itself. If you wish to have candles blessed for personal use on February 2 nd, please leave them in the basked with your name clearly written on them. If you wish to donate candles to the church for use throughout the year, please write For Church on the candles your kindness is appreciated and welcomed. Please Note: This year the Blessing of Candles will take place during Mass & Blessing of the Throats immediately after Masses on FRIDAY FEBRUARY 3 rd. Fr. Vivian

5 KATHLEEN MURPHY, (NÉE MEENEGHAN) ST. MARY S ROAD, SHRULE. RIP Kathleen Murphy, also known as Kate, was born on 18 th September, 1924 in Gurteen, Shrule. Her mother, Kate O Malley, was a Connemara woman from Beal an Daingin and had very little English when she arrived in Shrule. Indeed, by all accounts, her mother used a combination of Irish and English to communicate. Kate O Malley married John Meeneghan, a herd, from Gurteen. The couple had 10 children, the twins Joe and Mary, Sarah, Mattie, Maggie, Kathleen, Sean, Nora, Micheal and Bridie. Bridie Churchward now lives only a stones throw away from where they were all born in Gurteen. Kathleen Meeneghan married a local man, Thomas Murphy, in 1943 in Kilmaine church. Tom Murphy was from Dalgan and passed away in November, Tom was a real hard worker often leaving the house in the very early morning and returning late into the night. Times were hard for everyone then. They had 9 children, the eldest, Jarlath, passing away at the age of 71 in February, His death greatly affected Kathleen who was too frail at the time to attend his funeral in England. The surviving siblings include Jackie from Shrule Grove, Brendan, Paddy, Philip, Maureen, Anne, Martin and Paschal. In 1961 the family moved to Manchester in England in search of a better life. Tom worked as a labourer and Kathleen was a dinner lady serving school meals. Many areas in Manchester were full of Irish immigrants and in many ways it was home from home. Shrule men like Redmond Burke from Brackloon were regular visitors to the house and talk would invariably turn to the folks back home. In 1972 Tom and Kathleen returned to Ireland with their youngest son, the older ones having made lives for themselves in the UK, most of them marrying people with strong Irish connections from places such as Wicklow and Cork. Kathleen continued to work for lovely families such as the Mullins and Gibbons family helping out with the housework and looking after the children. She always spoke highly of them and her co-workers such as Delia Neale and Marie Cahill who became life-long friends. Although separated by distance, Kathleen loved her family deeply and was over the moon when they came back to Shrule on holidays. Nothing was more important to her than the welfare of her children, grand children and great grand children. After retiring, Kathleen continued an active life travelling to America, the Caribbean, the Holy land, Malta and Lourdes. She loved her garden and reading Irelands Own magazine. She also loved her neighbours and friends who were always so good to her...in fact; she liked nothing better than a cup of tea and a chat. Moreover, her weekly jaunts to Ballinrobe s Resource Centre allowed her to meet up with dear friends who she much appreciated. On 24 th November, 2016, Kathleen passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends in UCHG at the great age of 92. Ar dheis De go raibh a hanam. EIRCODE: The general public are being asked to have the details of their Eircode close at hand when contacting the emergency services such as the ambulance or fire service. It s vitally important that you give your Eircode to the dispatcher to ensure the ambulance crew can find your location as quickly as possible. Write this number near the landline phone or on the front page your phonebook, or send it as a text to your own mobile phone. SHRULE VILLAGE/ TIDY TOWNS AGM Wednesday 1 st February in Shrule 8.30pm. Please attend all and new faces welcome. Regards, Colm. To the world you may be just one person, but to one person you may be the world.

6 BRIDGIE NAUGHTON, MOCOLLOGAN, SHRULE. R.I.P. 24 th December, 2016 Bridgie was born in Kille, Shrule on 11 th February 1932 to parents Josephine and John Conroy. She was very close to her nineteen grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. She was grateful for her many blessings in life. Family was very important to her. There were some tough times in her life. Paddy passed away in December Anne- Marie died at four years of age in 1944, Peg in 1986 and Pat, Davie and Johnny in Bridgie had great faith and believed in the power of prayer. She attended Saturday evening Mass in Shrule and visited Knock and Lourdes. Bridgie loved when family, neighbours or friends dropped in for a chat. Everyone was welcome and she always made them feel at home. She could relate to both young and old. Bridgie loved being at home in Mocollogan but always had a great interest in the outside world. She was a fan of Midwest radio. She was proud to be from Mayo and always tuned in to the Mayo matches. She enjoyed an annual trip to England to visit her sisters, brothers and their extended families. Bridgie was down to earth and appreciated the simple things in life; visiting friends and relations, gardening, nature, farming and singing. She was light hearted, generous with praise, quick to smile and looked for the positive in every situation. She had a great sense of humour and always found a way to lighten people s spirits.
