3 Father Pat s Corner Learning to behold A boy and his father were walking in the woods when the boy was startled by a spider. Instinctively, the boy swatted the insect and was about to kill it. But his father stopped him in time. Look, his dad said. The boy stopped, bent down and watched the spider. He was soon captivated as the little spider continued to spin its silken web between the branches of a small tree. His dad explained that spiders are not to be feared, that spiders are good for the environment, protecting us and the plants we depend on for food by consuming disease-carrying insects. The boy now saw the spider with entirely new eyes. He no longer saw an ugly insect but was awestruck by the spider s unseen work in creation; the boy s fear of the spider had been transformed into understanding and respect. The boy had come to realize the little spider s connection to his own life. The youngster had learned to behold... In today s Gospel, John the Baptizer leaves the Gospel stage, exhorting his followers and us to behold the Lamb of God. The word behold connotes more than just to look - it implies wonder, attentiveness and awe. John calls us not just to see Jesus in our midst, but to behold his presence: to put aside our fears and stop our constant busyness in order to open our lives to being transformed and re-created in the light of Christ. In this new liturgical year, let us behold the Lamb of God among us: to open our hearts and consciences to see and hear Christ working, healing, and preaching in our midst; to embrace and be embraced by the love of God that moves and animates this story of his beloved Son s living among us. <><><><><><><><> PRAY FOR THE SANCTITY OF LIFE There will be a second collection next weekend, January 24/25, 2009 Pro-Life Collection Your generosity is appreciated. 5 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Father Joseph A. Kelly, S.J. Died 5 th December 2008 Joe s sister in Ireland, Oonagh O Hagan, and his Jesuit brother, Michael in Zambia, would like to thank most sincerely all those who sympathised with them on the recent sad loss of their brother Joe. We acknowledge with gratitude all those who attended Joe s wake and Funeral Mass in Jersey City and his Memorial Mass at St. Malachy s. Our thanks also to those who sent Mass cards, Remembrance cards, messages of sympathy and thoughtful letters, who posted inspirational messages on the St. Malachy s website, or who spoke about Joe at his funeral or memorial Mass. We would like to say special thanks to those who provided Joe with loving care and attention when he had health setbacks. Our words can never be enough to say how deeply indebted we are to Sister Peggy who was like a second mother to him, to every one of the Comerfords who made him part of their family, to Fran Casey and her family who were with him in his last moments, to Carmel Galasso who stood by him for so many years at St. Peter s and was there at the end to help him when he most needed it, to the Jesuits at America House without whose encouragement and boundless love he could not have survived, to Father Ed Heavey and the Jesuit community at St. Peter s for the warmth of their welcome back into their midst, to the St. Malachy s parishioners and those involved with Encore, to the students, alumni and staff of St. Peter s and those involved with CROP, to the parish community of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal at Point Lookout, and to the Shubert Organization and the Mayor s Midtown Committee, both of which meant so much to him. Special thanks also to Jared Lamenzo and Meredith Augustin for their beautiful music and singing during the Funeral Mass, as well as to Alex Zalman Kelber, Mae Roney, Jendi Tarde and the Choir of St. Malachy s for making the Memorial Mass so uplifting. Neither of us could be present at this Mass, but we have been greatly inspired by all that we saw of it on DVD. Our thanks also to all those at the McLaughlin Funeral Home in Jersey City for the beautiful way they presented Joe to us and greatly eased for us what was necessarily a painful occasion. Michael has already offered Mass for the intentions of all of you and will do so again each month this year. One of your messages said that it was a privilege to have known Joe. We would like to assure you that it was our privilege to come to know you, directly or through your messages, and to be able to thank you for the warmth of the welcome you gave to our young brother. Thank you over and over again, and in the words of Joe s Irish blessing, May the road to heaven rise gently with you; may the wind of Christ s welcome be always at your back; may the rain of Christ s mercy fall softly on the field of your soul; may the sun of Christ s love shine brightly in your heart; and, until we meet again, may God hold you now and forever in the hollow of his hand.
