3 June 1, 2008 Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church Page Two Father Pat s Corner - Lost and found A couple traveled to Paris to celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary. She thought it would be an opportunity to reflect on their marriage; he was going for the fine food, the wine, the sights. She wanted to talk; he wanted a break. She sought enlightenment; he looked forward to the city of lights. The barely had their first croissant before they were at odds. One evening, after a particularly expensive and painfully silent dinner, they were waling back to her hotel when she spotted a leather wallet on the ground. Inside the wallet were tattered family photos, a small sliver cross, a personal letter in Spanish and a weekly appointment card for psychiatric care and a current identity card for a shelter run by the St. Vincent de Paul Society. They spent most of their last day in Paris trying to return the wallet to its owner. They put aside their impatience and disappointment to find the shelter. Late that afternoon, they found the shelter on a narrow Paris street it was closed. Across the street was a small hotel. A sympathetic desk clerk agreed to take the wallet and return it. As they boarded their flight for home the following day, she realized that they had both gotten what they wanted from their Paris weekend; We had spoken so little, both before and after the wallet incident. But despite our silence, we located our common ground. Neither of us had asked the other, Should we try to return the wallet? We had both understood that we had to return it, and so we did. We may have lost an important weekend, but in a way that I suspected would sustain us for a longtime to come, we found ourselves The plane lifted off, looped around the Eiffel Tower, and set off in the direction home. I reached out my hand and he took it. In the midst of their stormy anniversary in Paris, this couple discovered that their life together was built on the rock of compassion and generosity, of kindness and selflessness. Jesus challenges his disciples to put the words of his Gospel into action; to make the love, forgiveness and justice we profess a reality in our everyday lives. May the values of the heart be the rock on which we build our homes; may the humility, compassion and justice of Jesus be our safeguard against the storms that batter us and throw us. OLMM Book Club The next OLMM Book Club meeting with Father Mike Sehler, SJ will take place on Saturday, June 7, 2008 from 7:30 to 8:30 PM in the CCD Room of the Rectory. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: CATHOLIC CHARITIES SENIOR HOUSING IN INWOOD, NY needs volunteers to assist in meal serving (lunch & dinner) and light clerical work on Sat/Sun. Anyone interested in this or other volunteer opportunities please contact MARY ELLEN KWIECINSKI, PROPER MASS ETIQUETTE A Gentle Reminder Attire The idea of Sunday best should be honored; churchgoers of all ages should dress conservatively. Arrival Arrive at least 10 minutes before Mass begins. This helps reduce distractions and provides time to get settled. Latecomers should wait to be seated so as not to disrupt the service and the congregation. Entering the church It is optional to bless yourself with holy water, but as a sign of respect for the Blessed Sacrament, genuflect before taking your seat. Slide over to the center of the pew to accommodate others who arrive after you. Quiet time The liturgy is not the time to socialize with friends or prepare the offering envelope. Instead, sit quietly or pray. Turn off cell phones and pagers. Kneeling Respect for the Eucharist demands that we kneel on our knees without leaning back on the pew. Be careful not to drop or bang the kneelers. If ill or disabled, it is acceptable to sit. Sign of Peace People usually shake hands or exchange a quick kiss, but if you have a cold or cough, you can politely say, Peace be with you, without shaking hands. Communion Receive the holy Eucharist with reverence, bow slightly and respond Amen. If receiving the host by hand, place the left hand over the right (or opposite if you are left handed) and raise your arms slightly. Gum or candy should never be in your mouth when taking the host. Sign of the Cross Join your hands; touch the forehead with the tips of your three longest fingers on your right hand, to the center of your chest, then to your left and right shoulder (in that order). Leaving the church The final part of Mass is singing a closing hymn. Leaving before the hymn ends is inappropriate.
