3 August 9, 2009 Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church Page Two Father Pat s Corner The bread of listening A young psychiatrist, new to the profession, realized that she needed help in dealing with her own problems, so she made an appointment to meet with a psychiatrist herself. But fifteen minutes into the first session, she knew this doctor would not be able to help her - her questions were too simple, her expression emotionless; frankly, she didn t think this doctor was too bright. While she wanted to discontinue the sessions, she was too busy with her own work to find another doctor, so she continued meeting with her. And all she would do, week after week, was cry. The doctor never said anything wise or wonderful. She would occasionally tug at her skirt or rotate her wedding rings, but said nothing nor gave any hint of understanding or compassion or wisdom. Every week, during their hour together, the young woman would cry and think about how to leave this psychiatrist who clearly did not understand her. Eventually, the young resident felt better and decided to move on with her life and career. That s when she learned something important about her profession. She writes: After we said good-bye, I realized something: All along, she had known who I felt about her. All those years, she had known I thought she was stupid. She had let me think it, because she understood-which I did notthat what I needed was not someone I could admire, not someone shamanistic, but someone who would listen to me while I cried I hope that one day I will be able to let my patients think I am stupid, while I am listening to them cry. In allowing herself to be perceived as stupid in order to listen, a doctor becomes bread for her struggling young colleague. As Jesus, the Bread of life, gave life to the world through his selfless compassion and humble servanthood to others, we, too, can give life to the world when we look beyond our own needs and security to the good of others, giving not from our treasure but from our poverty, nourishing one another in the love, compassion and selflessness of the Gospel Jesus.
