Prayer is the action that leads people to God. We take time away from the distractions of the world, to turn to God, to contemplate, to listen and talk to him, to read His words and meditate on them, to be one with Him. Prayer gives meaning to Lenten practices, which should draw us closer to Him. FASTING: What is it? Fasting is restricting consumption, depriving yourself of both good and bad things for the glory of God. This Means normally watching what you eat on a day that it is practiced, on regular meal and two small ones. During Lent, we fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. ABSTINENCE is practiced all Fridays of Lent ALMSGIVING: What is it? Almsgiving is the action that leads us Christians to see others, love the, listen to them and them our time, help, advice, money, shelter, company, affection. It is not limited to giving material goods, it is the gift of self. It is based on CHARITY, to love God and others as oneself. To give alms is to be united to Christ in his poverty. 6 LENTEN RULES OF FAST AND ABSTINENCE Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel. These are the words spoken on Ash Wednesday to those who receive ashes on their forehead. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (#2043) states that we are to observe the prescribed days of fasting and abstinence. The Season of Lent is our prime time for fasting and abstinence. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of FAST and ABSTINENCE. All the Fridays of Lent are days of ABSTINENCE. Adults (age 18+) are bound by the law of FAST up to the beginning of their 60th year, meaning you eat one full meal and two smaller meals that do not equal the volume of the full meal. All persons who have completed their 14th year are bound by the law of ABSTINENCE (no eating meat or fowl). Additionally, Catholics who have received their First Communion are bound by Church law to receive Holy Communion at least once a year during the Easter Season. 8 ONE MILLION STEPS From the first time I heard about the Red Rhino Orphanage Project in 2008, I was touched by the wonderful "works" RROP is accomplishing. Now, in my retirement, I have the time to contribute in a meaningful way via this fundraising campaign. My goal is to complete one million steps between March 6, 2019 and April 21, 2019, the 40 days of the Lenten Season. I will attempt 25,000 steps per day, approximately 25% of which will be on a treadmill. If you donate one cent/1,000 steps, that's 25 cents per day and $10 overall. Two cents = $20, five cents = $50, and so on. I hope to raise this money to increase school and food supplies for the RROP children. I hope you will join me.
