1 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time October 8, 2006 We Need You During these last several weeks Fr. Timothy Shannon - as part of the implementation of the Pastoral Plan for the City of Steubenville preached at our parishes about the importance of continuing to grow in our personal relationship with the Lord. Coming to know the Lord in a more personal and deeper way is something we are called to do each day. Also, again as part of the Pastoral Plan, our parish will be participating in a process to help parish members, individually and collectively, "go deeper" in their relationship with Jesus. Right now we need you to consider being one of the people who will help in doing this for our parishioners. Won't you help? If you are interested please call your parish office. Lastly, let us pray that many will want to help in this process and that all our parishioners will participate in this parish and citywide effort to continue our growth in a deeper and more personal relationship with Jesus. Our Life of Faith within the Church Readings for Week of Oct. 8, 2000 Sunday: Gn 2:18-24/ Heb 2:9-11/ Mk 10:2-16 or 10:2-12 Monday: Gal 1:6-12/ Lk 10:25-37 Tuesday: Gal 1:13-24/ Lk 10:38-42 Wednesday: Gal 2:1-2, 7-14/ Lk 11:1-4 Thursday: Gal 3:1-5 / Lk 11:5-13 Friday: Gal 3:7-14/ Lk 11:15-26 Saturday: Gal 3:22-29/ Lk 11:27-28 Next Sunday: Wis 7:7-11/ Heb 4:12-13/ Mk 10:17-30 or 10:17-27 "'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother (and be joined to his wife), and the two shall become one flesh.' So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate." - Mk 10:7-9 Apostleship of Prayer Our Holy Father has asked us to pray and make sacrifices for the following intentions during October: General Intention: That all those who are baptized may mature in their faith and manifest it through clear, coherent and courageous choices in life. Mission Intention: That the celebration of World Mission Day may everywhere increase the spirit of missionary animation and cooperation. Pink Ribbon Alert: If you see people wearing little pink ribbons be aware that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This disease has touched countless lives. Perhaps you've lost a loved one or you yourself are a survivor! It's estimated that one in eight women will develop Breast Cancer during her lifetime and if it is caught early, more than 97% will survive. Early detection is critical. Some of the ways you can help in the fight for the disease are regular checkups by a healthcare provider. Self-exam is another. If you haven't had a mammogram recently, schedule one. Another way is to follow healthy dietary guidelines by adding fruit and vegetables to your daily food intake. Some studies suggest adding grapefruit if you can tolerate it. It helps lower cholesterol, and excess body fat can increase risk of Breast Cancer. Again some form of exercise is also recommended to reduce risk. Find more about Breast Cancer and any other form of cancer from the American Cancer ACS-2345, or visit or your own personal healthcare provider. Eucharistic Adoration Pope Benedict XVI said in an address to priests in Poland in May, 2006: In a world where there is so much noise, so much bewilderment, there is a need for silent adoration of Jesus concealed in the Host. Be assiduous in the prayer of adoration and teach it to the faithful. It is a source of comfort and light, particularly to those who are suffering. Gospel of Life Advocates of embryonic stem cell research often use diabetes as an example of a disease that their unethical research will cure some day. California has even set aside taxpayer money to fund this immoral medical approach. How ironic, then, that in California, the LaJolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology is set to begin a vaccine-based treatment of Type 1 diabetes in humans before the end of this year. This is yet another example of how medical research is coming up with ethical treatments of devastating diseases at a time when embryonic stem cell research has yet to produce any usable results. Council to vacate the one unimproved portion of Garfield for the church. We would put a new street on the other side of the church to replace it. We have spoken to the neighbors affected, and they are supportive. Our primary reason for requesting this street vacation is the safety of children. Holy Rosary Central will have only pre-k through 6th grade, and we do not want small children crossing a city street to get to their cafeteria (eventually in the new church basement) and church for services. Second, we want to keep the church as physically close as possible to the current Holy Rosary and Catholic Central parking lots to limit people s walk from parking to the front door. The City Council will vote on the issue after more studies and engineering are completed. St. Anthony Men s Club The Half/Half Raffle tickets will be sold before and after each of the weekend Masses. Please support our Men s Club and our Church in this way! The winner of the Half/Half Raffle for September was Nancy Ciamacco. She has won $102.
