4 Our New Bishop - Bishop Daniel E. Garcia Bishop Garcia will be installed as the fifth Bishop of the Diocese of Monterey on Tuesday, January 29th, 2019 at Madonna Del Sasso in Salinas. Prior to coming to our Diocese, Bishop Garcia was the Auxiliary Bishop and Titular Bishop of Capsus, for the Diocese of Austin, Texas. His episcopal consecration was on March 3, 2015 from Bishop Vasquez. Bishop Garcia was born in Cameron, Texas as the first child of Daniel and Sarah Garcia. He graduated from C.H. Yoe High School in 1978 and earned an Associate degree from Tyler Junior College in Subsequently, he entered formation and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Mary s Seminary at the University of St. Thomas in Garcia completed his Master of Divinity studies at Saint Mary s in In 2007 he earned a Master of Arts in Liturgical Studies from the Saint John s School of Theology. Bishop Garcia was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop John E. McCarthy on May 28, He then served as associate pastor at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Austin until He then served one year terms as associate pastor at Cristo Rey Catholic Church, St. Louis Catholic Church, and then St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church. He was named pastor of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in 1995, a position he would hold for the next 18 years. In addition to serving in parishes, Garcia has served on many diocesan boards and committees. These included the Priests Personnel Board, the College of Consultors, and the Presbyteral Council. He has also served as Chair of the Presbyteral Council and as Dean of the Austin North Deanery. He was a member of the Diocesan Vocation Team, the Liturgical Commission, and the Diaconal Advisory Committee, as well as serving as Master of Ceremonies for the Bishop. On March 3, 2014 Bishop Joe S. Vásquez appointed Garcia as Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia. RMD and Charitable Contributions Many changes occurred with the tax bill passed in December, These changes will affect the tax returns we submit for 2018 in As a result, the new standard itemized deduction rules affect our deductions, and how to get tax breaks for contributions to qualified charities. Some of us must take an RMD - a required minimum distribution from our IRAs. There is relief however! It is possible to make a QCD, or qualified charitable distribution directly from your IRA, and not count as taxable income. Sound confusing? It doesn t have to be. John of the Cross Memorial December 14 A Doctor of the Church, John is also one of its great mystics and poets. Born Juan de Yepes de Alvarez in Spain, he was raised by his mother and entered a Carmelite monastery in He was ordained in Finding the Carmelites very lax, he joined with St. Teresa of Avila to reform the order. In 1568, he entered the first reformed house for men, taking the name John of the Cross. He encountered severe opposition and was even imprisoned for nine months in a monastery cell, where he began writing poems. The Dark Night of the Soul is his most famous work. Only after his death was John recognized as co-founder of the Discalced Carmelites. He is the patron saint of mystics and poets.
