We pray that everyone will have a safe and joyful New Years, and make 2019 an even more passionate and creative year for the entire St. Joseph s family. Poverty Awareness Month January is poverty awareness month. On the back of the bulletin we have a calendar of the first two weeks of January with daily insights to help reflect about poverty, and how we can help others. We will publish the following weeks in a subsequent bulletin issue. Poverty USA has stated Prayer is the raising of one s mind and heart to God or the requesting of good things from God (St. John Damascene, Catechism of the Catholic Church 2559). Prayer and meditation can open our eyes to our responsibilities and our hearts to solutions. Millions of people throughout the United States and the world are struggling. Please help us pray for their well-being. In addition the Catholic Campaign for Human Development has relected Come, Holy Spirit, and open our hearts, minds, and souls to your presence. Grace us with the strength to follow the examples of Jesus. Like Jesus, may the Spirit provide us with a voice to cry out for justice for the poor. Remind us that what we do to the least of those among us, we do to you. P A G E 4 The following Prayer can help us reflect. God of Justice, open our eyes to see you in the face of those in poverty. Open our ears to hear you in the cries of those exploited. Open our mouths to defend you in the public squares as well as in private deeds. Remind us that what we do to the least ones, we do to you. Amen Being Neighbor: The Catechism and Social Justice, USCCB, April 1998 New Year: Go Forth With LIVING the Power of the Epiphany Epiphany! The Magi left their bubble, their comfort zone, to follow a new star. They went forth, together, pursuing a beckoning light that promised a new reality, new priorities, a new relationship one worthy of a challenging journey and the offering of their greatest treasures. The New Year begins with the Christmas season and an incrementally increasing amount of daylight in both our hemisphere and our lives. We may stop during this season to consider the gift of God-With- Us, born into our comfortable but sometimes stagnant understanding of our place in the world, into our continuing search for meaning and relationship. Unwrapping this gift of Emmanuel is a risky, but rewarding, process. What might be some of the beckoning lights promising new realities and relationships that can change the world and our own lives? How can we seek more clearly the presence of God in those near and far? We start with those around us and go beyond to encounter the impatient people in line at the grocery store, the harried bus driver, the bewildered parent, the exhausted server at the restaurant, the person

5 on the sidewalk hidden under a blanket, the commuter whose wheelchair is stuck on the curb, the family speaking in another language than ours. Stars for such encounters may also be found in the January calendar. 1. Check out Pope Francis s message for the World Day of Peace on January 1: francesco/en/messages/ peace.index.html 2. National Migration Week is from Jan. 6-12, 2019 (www. justiceforimmigrants.org). Where did your ancestors come from? What did they find in their new country? How can we seek and encounter those on the move today who are part of our one family under God? 3. January 9th is the World Day of Migrants and Refugees. We are a Church without borders, valuing the life, gifts and thriving of every Let us imitate the Magi: looking upwards, setting out, and freely offering our gifts. Pope Francis, Homily for the Solemnity of the Epiphany, person. How do we seek and encounter those who have left so much behind and who look for a new start and new opportunities to offer their culture and skills? 4. January 21, 2019 is the national holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. How do we seek and encounter the lessons and sacrifices of the civil rights movement, and non-violent resistance, in the issues of racism and injustice that continue to fracture our one family under God? 5. January is the National Prayer Vigil for Life. How do we seek and encounter those who are most vulnerable from the beginning of life until its final stages? How do we understand each life as precious? 6. January is Poverty Awareness Month (www. povertyusa. org). How do we seek and encounter people living in poverty, including the 2.8 million impoverished people who work full-time, year-round? The star that called the Magi to Go Forth was visible to all, but not all responded to the beacon in the gloom of night. May we be Magi, seeking and encountering our vulnerable brothers and sisters, experiencing a new reality and relationships through the gift God-With-Us every day. National Migration Week 2019 Prayer Loving Father, Protect, we pray, all those forced from their homes by violence and persecution, guide them to places of shelter and safety, and grant that people migrate always by choice and not necessity. Watch over children who migrate alone, protect them from the risks they face all by themselves, help them reach their destination safely, and reunite them with those from whom they have been separated. Guide all migrants who seek a better life, to new opportunities, and grant them a new beginning. We beseech you to give each of us the strength and generosity to welcome the stranger and to open our homes to the newcomer, and in doing so to comfort those who are suffering. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. Building Communities of Welcome National Migration Week 2019 For nearly a half century, the Catholic Church in the United States has celebrated National Migration Week, which is an opportunity for the Church to reflect on the circumstances confronting migrants, including immigrants, refugees, children, and victims and survivors of human trafficking. The theme for National Migration Week 2019 Building Communities of Welcome emphasizes our responsibility as Catholics to engage and welcome newcomers on their arrival, and help to ease their transition into a new life here in the United States. Welcoming communities do not emerge by chance, but are established through the hard work and conviction of people on the ground through direct service, shared experience and faith, advocacy, and institution building. Is Jesus calling you to a particular hour each week? If you cannot commit to a regular hour, how about being a substitute? Call Nina & Larry Wagner at (831) , or nina-wagner@hotmail.com to sign up. (Current adorers and substitutes, please give us your current address. Thank you!) May our Good God, Who cannot be outdone in generosity, reward you! Raymond of Penyafort Fourth Century Feast Day January 7 Born in Catalonia, Spain, he was already an accomplished academic and preacher when he joined the Dominicans in Called to Rome as papal confessor in 1230, he collected conciliar and papal degrees in a standard work used by canon lawyers for nearly 700 years. Returning to Spain in 1236, he devoted himself to converting Muslims and Jews, establishing schools to teach Arabic and Hebrew, and launching the Inquisition in Catalonia. He was Dominican master general for two years. During this National Migration Week, let us all take the opportunity to engage migrants as community members, neighbors, and friends. We can find opportunities to engage migrant communities in our local community through our local Catholic Charities and other community organizations. Opportunities to encounter and accompany can include: becoming a foster parents to migrant children who have been separated from family members, participating in a local Parishes Organized to Welcome Refugees (POWR) program; launching a new initiative P A G E 6

7 SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY 6 Today is the first day of National Migration Week. There are many factors that have contributed to the displacement of more than 68.5 million people throughout the world; poverty and migration have a very strong link. What can you do to welcome our migrant brothers and sisters in your community? 7 Work is much more than simply earning a living; it is a way of using our gifts to participate in God s creation. We are called to uphold the dignity and rights of workers including just wages, humane conditions, respectful treatment, etc. How can you help ensure workers rights and dignity are respected? 1 An annual papal message for the World Day of Peace (Jan. 1) has been released every year since Read the 2019 message and use the accompanying twopage handout to reflect on its important invitation to all Catholics and people of good will. 8 Fr. Matthew O Donnell was the 2018 Cardinal Bernardin New Leadership Award recipient for his leadership as his parish works to address the poverty and violence in the community through GED prep, career readiness, and other programs. How can you get involved in your parish s efforts to address poverty? 2 The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) has been working for 49 years to help end poverty by empowering low-income families and educating about the root causes of poverty. Read about the work of the United Workers Association and other groups that receive funding from CCHD. 9 Poverty is not a catch-phrase it is a serious reality many are living. Are you familiar with the facts about those living in poverty in the U.S.? Learn facts about poverty in the U.S. and make 2 commitments to address poverty this month. 3 Today s readings remind us that we are all children of God. Solidarity invites us to remember that we are part of one global human family. Join us in Washington, D.C. for the Catholic Social Ministry Gathering on Feb. 2-5 to speak out when human dignity is threatened by racism, poverty, division, and unjust treatment of immigrant families. 10 The CCHD Creating on the Margins Multimedia Art Contest in 2018 focused on the theme of Sharing the Journey with migrants and refugees. Watch these films and reflect on these pieces of art created by talented youth across the country who are passionate about the welfare of the world s migrants and refugees. 4 Today is the feast of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first canonized U.S. citizen and founder of the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph, which serves and educates children living in poverty. Her work laid the foundation for the American Catholic School system. Both her order and Catholic schools continue to further the social mission of the Church to this day. 11 Today is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. There are many children, women, and men being trafficked in the world today. Use this film to learn about the systemic problems that lead to trafficking. Find out about your slavery footprint and learn about how you can make an impact with CRS ethical trade. 5 If someone who has worldly means sees a brother in need and refuses him compassion, how can the love of God remain in him? (1 Jn. 3:17). How can you be in solidarity with your brother or sister in need? Read how Catholics at a parish in New Orleans and their sister parish in Nicaragua help each other in times of need. Compassion has no borders. 12 Today, reflect on the role of our civil leaders and their obligations to implement just policies for the common good. A basic moral test for society is how our most vulnerable members are faring. Learn about how you can promote the common good by visiting USCCB s Action Center. Say a prayer to confront global poverty.
