5 RMD and Charitable Contributions Many changes occurred with the tax bill passed in December, These changes will affect the tax returns we submit for 2018 in As a result, the new standard itemized deduction rules affect our deductions, and how to get tax breaks for contributions to qualified charities. Some of us must take an RMD - a required minimum distribution from our IRAs. There is relief however! It is possible to make a QCD, or qualified charitable distribution directly from your IRA, and not count as taxable income. Sound confusing? It doesn t have to be. David DeLong, CPA and member of our Parish Finance Council has offered to help you understand at no cost. If enough people are interested we can have a seminar at the church. You can contact David at Christ the King That He Would Reign in Our Hearts In 1925, Pope Pius XI instituted the Feast of Christ the King in his encyclical letter Quas Primas, in response to growing nationalism and secularism around the world. He had the foresight to realize that secularism could soon wage awful wars against the Church. During the early twentieth century, in Mexico, Russia, and in many parts of Europe, atheistic regimes threatened not just the Catholic Church and its faithful but civilization itself. Pope Pius XI s encyclical gave Catholics hope and while governments of men around them crumbled the assurance that Christ the King shall reign forever. Pope Pius XI said that Christ reign[s] in the hearts of men, both by reason of the keenness of his intellect and the extent of his knowledge, and also because he is very truth, and it is from him that truth must be obediently received by all mankind. While we hope and pray that the dark times of almost a century ago remain in the past, a troubling recent Pew Forum report shows that religious intolerance is on the rise worldwide, including in the United States. Therefore, we must remain vigilant when our first American freedom protected under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is threatened. Nothing deters him: he rejoices in poverty; he labors strenuously; he welcomes hardships; he laughs off false accusations; he rejoices in anguish. St. Anthony Mary Claret Mass but the freedom to feed the hungry, serve the needy, and tend to the sick. During this time when we come together as a nation in thanksgiving for our many blessings, let us thank God for the gift of religious liberty and ask that it not be taken for granted. Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty O God our Creator, from your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us this great land will always be one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. 6 Andrew the Apostle First Century Feast Day November 30 In the synoptic Gospels, Andrew is a Galilean fisher-man grouped with his brother, Peter, and with James and John in the inner circle of Apostles; in John s Gospel, he is the disciple of John the Baptist who is the first to follow Jesus and who brings his brother to the Lord. Many traditions about Andrew come from the apocryphal second-century Acts of Andrew, which depicts him as a zealous missionary in the Black Sea region who is crucified tied to an x-shaped cross by the Roman governor. Some early church historians also said he evangelized in Greece and Asia Minor. He is the patron saint of Scotland, Russia, Greece, and those who fish for a living. Celebrating First Reconciliation This year we have 45 First Eucharist children who will celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time. We ask you, our wonderful parishioners, to pray for them as they receive God s loving mercy on Thursday, December 6th in our Church. Our young parishioners have been preparing for many months and are both excited and nervous to experience His mercy that He bestows on us all. This joyous sacrament of forgiveness demonstrates the importance of His love and brings all of us closer to God. It will be a time to celebrate as our children experience His warmth and glory for the first time in reconciliation. Pope Francis said it best, To celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation means to be wrapped in a warm embrace. We are grateful and appreciate your prayers for our parish children. He was truly a man of faith and hope; and one day he heard John the Baptist proclaiming Jesus as: the Lamb of God (Jn 1: 36); so he was stirred, and with another unnamed disciple followed Jesus, the one whom John had called the Lamb of God. The Evangelist says that they saw where he was staying; and they stayed with him that day... (Jn 1: 37-39). Thus, Andrew enjoyed precious moments of intimacy with Jesus. 7 FAMILY ADVENT CALENDAR 2018 SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY December Begin this journey of Advent by blessing your Advent wreath. Light the first violet candle and sing, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. Try reading or listening to the daily Mass readings together as a family, as part of your preparation for Christmas this year. As you reflect on Mary s journeys to see her kinswoman Elizabeth and then to find shelter in Bethlehem, pray for migrants traveling to find family, hope, and safe haven around the world today. Ever wonder where the phrase O Root of Jesse s stem comes from? Research how to make a Jesse tree and dive into Christ s lineage. On this feast day of St. Nicholas, we remember his abundant generosity to the poor. Together, can your family purchase a gift from a giving tree this year for a person or family in need? It s the first Friday of Advent! Start a Friday family tradition of praying a decade of the Rosary before bedtime. Brush up on rosary prayers here: On this Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, attend Mass as a family and add the Hail Mary to your pre-meal prayers. On this Second Sunday of Advent, light the second violet candle on your Advent wreath and consider donating to a special collection for retired religious today. Las Posadas, a reenactment of Mary and Joseph seeking shelter before the birth of Jesus, traditionally begins today. Pray for migrants seeking shelter around the world today The Lord promises refreshment and freedom to all the oppressed of our world, but he needs us to fulfill his promise. He needs our eyes to see the needs of our brothers and sisters. (Pope Francis, July 6, 2018) Jesus, Mary, and Joseph themselves were refugees in Egypt... the Holy Family has become a figure with whom Christian migrants and refugees throughout the ages can identify, giving them hope and courage in hard times. (USCCB, Strangers No Longer, no. 26) On her feast day, pray to Our Lady of Guadalupe, and maybe plan to enjoy some pan de dulce and hot chocolate as a family! Today s Memorial of St. Lucy is marked by pageants and festivals in Scandinavia & Italy. Research an Advent custom of your family s ethnic heritage and try it this year! St. John of the Cross, whom we honor today, was known for his deep spirituality and compassion. Reflect today on what more your family can do to prepare spiritually for Christmas in these last 10 days of Advent. Do remember Jesus was a refugee? How much does your family know about the plight of refugees today? Use this guide to help answer questions Yesterday was Gaudete Sunday when we shifted our reflection from the Lord is coming to the Lord is near. Rejoice! You are more than half way to Christmas! Christ saved men not with thunder and lightning, but as a wailing babe in the manger and as a silent sufferer upon the cross (St. Jerome, Letters, 82.1). Reflect on the humility of Christ today. If we say that we have not sinned, we make [God] a liar, and his word is not in us (1 Jn 1:10). Go to confession as a family this season and enjoy Christmas with a clean hearts and peaceful souls, thanks to God s mercy. Take time today to bless the family crèche. (Based on your family s tradition, you may choose to hide the baby Jesus until Christmas morning.) Make this Friday night a family movie night and watch a Christmas classic together. We learn in today s Gospel that Mary spent three months with her kinswoman Elizabeth before returning home. Thousands of travelers today are traveling to look for a new home. Read some of their stories. Add this O Antiphon to your daily or meal-time prayer today: O Emmanuel, our King and Giver of Law: come to save us, Lord our God! (Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers, Revised Edition, 77) Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means God is with us.
