Danilo Soriano Pastor Religious Education Tel: 630/ Parish Office Tel: 630/ Parish Office Website: TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The recent October count tracking the statistics of participation at Sunday Mass calls to mind the situations of churches where it is difficult or impossible for Catholics to worship freely. This is especially striking in English Catholic history, as freedom of worship was systematically dismantled at the time of the Reformation. It seems that most English people retained deeply Catholic sympathies throughout the period of religious upheaval. Catholics who refused to participate in the public worship of the Church of England were called recusants, and beginning with the reign of Elizabeth I, they were subject to strict penalties. Recusant literally means a person refusing to obey a command. Most of those laws were in force until the early 1800s, and Catholics were not entirely emancipated from the duty of Anglican worship until up their Catholic faith. Many of these wealthy recusant families founded the colony of Maryland, and later many members of the old Catholic families continued on to the Kentucky frontier in search of greater religious freedom. What a wonderful thought, and what a wonderful image to keep in front of us as we travel down life s road. For if the path is revealed in the treading, it s good to know that God is with us and all around us every step of the way. But Paul knows that this divine presence is not timid. Instead, God calls out to us, and Paul prays that we, along with the Thessalonians, might be made worthy of that call. And who knows more about God s call than Zacchaeus, the tax collector? Jesus called him out of a tree, for goodness sake. Or perhaps more correctly, as we reflect upon the end of today s Gospel reading, for heaven s sake. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Holding on to Catholic faith was therefore a luxury of the very rich, who maintained private chapels, and sent their daughters and sons to English convents and monastery schools on the continent. When Jesus asked to come to his house, Zacchaeus pledged to give half of what he owned to the poor. Half! And then he did more. This thief, this extortionist promised to return at a four-fold rate all that he stole. Giving away what is not mine is an act of justice. Giving away what is mine is an act of mercy. HOMEBOUND PARISHIONERS Father Soriano is setting up a time to visit our parishioners who are homebound. If you or a member of your family is homebound and would like a visit and receive communion from Father, please notify the office. The name will be added to the list. LUKE PARISH With the help of your donations, the hand bells have been refurbished. The bells, purchased in 2004, needed maintenance. They have been cleaned and repairs have been made. Because of your help, the hand bell choir can continue to be an active part of the music program at St. Luke Parish. UNDY SUNDAY THANK YOU to all the members of St. Luke Parish! Unday Sunday on October 15th & 16th was, once again, a great success. We collected a total of 8 large bags of underwear and diapers for babies, children and adults. And our cash/check/gift card donations totaled an unbelievable $525.00! Thank you SO MUCH for your generosity! Your donations help Catholic Charities to fulfill its mission in serving those in need. ALL SOULS DAY MASS Each year on November 2nd, the church honors all those who have transcended this life to the next. This year here at St. Luke Parish, we will celebrate a special Mass and Memorial Service to remember all those who have died. If you have lost a loved one or friend through death either recently or some time ago, we encourage and invite you to attend this special Mass and Memorial Service on Wednesday, November 2nd at. You are encouraged to bring a framed photo of your deceased loved one(s) to display from October 29th to November 6th. "Blessed are they who mourn, For they shall be comforted." Pictures can be dropped off when coming to Mass or at the Parish Office. We would like to take this opportunity to recall some of our loved ones who have gone on to eternal life this past year. CCW CHRISTMAS DINNER AND AUCTION Donations for our silent auction are being accepted now thru the weekend of November 12th & 13th. The theme this year is Corks, Kegs and all the Extras. This includes wine, craft beers, glassware, etc. Our poster in the hallway gives many other suggestions. This is also the second weekend for ticket sales. Ticket price is the same as last year, $ Next week is the final week for ticket sales. Please remember that tickets will not be sold at the door so get your tickets early. St. Luke s Annual Christmas Dinner and Auction is our only fundraising event, funding the many free events CCW hosts throughout the year and in addition, 10% of the profits will also go to Feed My Starving Children, so come join the fun! RELIGIOUS EDUCATION It was an extreme pleasure to see the children, families and catechists all together. We made quite an impact on the other parishioners of St. Luke. Father Danny even commented on it at the end of Mass. He loved having all of us together at one Mass. Please join us at the next Mass on Sunday, November 13th at 11:00am. It will also be a Children s Mass where our students will participate in as many of the ministries as they can. We hope to see you there! PLEASE CONSIDER HELPING THE HELPER Join St. Vincent De Paul and help the poor in our parish boundaries with food, clothing, and bills. You get to collect and give away the gifts of others, to people in need. It only takes a few hours a month and the hours are very flexible. WEEKEND FOR WIDOWED WOMEN & MEN There will be a retreat/workshop on November 5th & 6th, at Our Lady of the Angels House of Prayer (located in Lemont on Alvernia Manor s campus). Being widowed is a special loss, and this program is designed especially to help the widowed find hope & joy again. This weekend includes one overnight stay and meals. Space is limited, so please register early by calling the Joyful Again Widowed Ministry 708/ TREE OF LIGHT INFANT MEMORIAL MASS All families and individuals are welcome to attend the Tree of Light Infant Memorial Mass at the Blanchette Catholic Center in Crest Hill on Sunday, November 6th. This liturgy will remember infants who have been lost through miscarriage, stillbirth, infant death, other pregnancy losses or early childhood death. At 2:00pm, a special tree blessing ceremony, which precedes the Mass, will give families the opportunity to place a ribbon on a tree and light a candle to have their loss acknowledged and shared through a formal church service. Family members may wish to arrive at 1:30pm to sign in and to gather in the chapel. A reception with light refreshments will be served immediately following. RISE UP Rise Up is an opportunity for all current 8th grade students to participate in a day of leadership, teamwork, character building, and service run by the National Honor Society. St. Francis High School s National Honor Society members will guide current 8th grade students through activities and workshops that will prepare them for high school and beyond.
