Fifty years ago, the landscape of liturgy was very different. It was grounded firmly in Latin, which is to the present day still the official language of the Roman Rite. Very few people were fluent in Latin, even though in those days Latin was far more widely studied in school. Nevertheless, almost every Catholic was competent in the responses and chants of Latin since it is not difficult to pronounce. The clergy were normally minimally competent in Latin, since much of seminary education was conducted in that language. When the Second Vatican Council was convened, all of the debate and daily work of the council was to be in Latin. In the first session in 1962, Boston s Cardinal Richard Cushing continually complained about it, and threatened not to return in 1963 if something wasn t done. He convinced the fathers when he rose to speak in fairly fluent Latin in an unforgettable Boston twang. The next year, he returned, but with a simultaneous translation system funded by the people of Boston. The ordinary everyday language of the people, the vernacular, had arrived at the Vatican via Boston! Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Last week we heard that, following the Ascension, the disciples, Mary, and other followers of the Lord retreated to the upper room in prayer. This week we hear that, while praying in that room, the Holy Spirit comes upon them. Jesus post-resurrection promise, recounted in today s Gospel, is fulfilled: the power of the Holy Spirit comes upon Jesus followers. Saint Paul tells us that all of us, in some way, are given gifts of the Holy Spirit, gifts that can be used to spread the Good News. Today is one of the Church s greatest festivals. Let us carry the refrain of the responsorial psalm with us throughout the coming week: Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth! (Psalm 104:30). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. One of the families in the parish is a single mom with two daughters. This single mom has a machine device embedded in her back to help keep her alive. Mom does her best to take care of her children all by herself. The St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Luke helps her by providing food, assists with some medical expenses and help with some or her utility payments. In the Gospel that all of us read and believe, Jesus is quoted many times telling us to help the poor. The volunteers of the St. Vincent de Paul Society do our best to help those who call for help. To continue doing that by answering the phone calls and delivering the food, and assisting with some of the bills, we ask your financial help. Just a few dollars from everyone would help a lot. We have many more than just the single mom we mentioned. There are many more families in our parish who are poor and suffering. To help them, there are donation boxes by the side door to the large side parking lot. There is a solid wooden box at the back of church on the east side, and there is a donation box just outside the back door of the church in the lobby by the book of prayers. Please help us. A little bit from a lot of people will help us help others and serve the poor as Jesus commands us everyday in His Gospel. Thank you!! 5 ST. VINCENT DE PAUL CLOTHING DRIVE JUNE 10TH & JUNE 11TH The St. Vincent de Paul truck will be in our parking lot the weekend of June 10th & 11th for our Spring Clothing Drive!! We will accept. Clothing, shoes, linens and books in good or bad condition. Unusable clothing, shoes, linens and even books generate income for the needy because they are sold for rags or in bulk. No baby equipment such as cribs, walkers, strollers, playpens, etc. ALL BABY CLOTHES ACCEPTED! Small housewares and electronics dishes, glass ware, utensils, toasters, blenders, coffee makers, radios, cd players etc. SORRY NO TELEVISIONS. Your donations go to the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Shops where much of your donations are given away free to needy families in the community. Some are sold at reasonable prices at the thrift shops so that needy families can shop with dignity. Proceeds from the thrift shops go into a general assistance fund where St. Vincent de Paul Conferences at the churches help families with rent, mortgage or utility assistance. Web site: WHY DON T STREETLAMPS HAVE EARS? Mom! my 3-year-old self hissed at 6 a.m. Why don t streetlamps have ears? My mom later wrote (in a 1974 article) that she peered at me sleepily, silently asking a question of her own: Seriously?! That year I amused and exasperated my parents with countless questions: Why did sister leave one shoe here and one there? If God is up in heaven, how did he make the grass? Why are dandelions yellow? To that query, Mom replied, I guess that s how God wanted them and wrote, In our house, we let God answer many of our questions. I still have questions: Why is my dynamic young friend dying of cancer? Why are a parent s own children sometimes hard to love? How can we end war, poverty, sex trafficking? Should we donate money or save for college? How, exactly, does salvation work? Sometimes science or professionals are God s instruments to answer my questions. Sometimes answers come quietly to my heart and sometimes they don t come at all. Faith doesn t mean never questioning. It means trusting enough to ask, even when a question seems silly or pointless. 7 FIRST HOLY, THEN HAPPY Having been married 16 years, I m aware that marriage isn t all flowers and sunshine. Oh, I was realistic enough, even early on, to know that miscommunication and disagreements would intrude on romance, fondness and the glad sharing of chores and childcare. Even so, the subtitle of Gary Thomas book Sacred Marriage (Zondervan) grabbed my attention: What if God designed marriage to make us holy more than to make us happy? I pondered that for days, reminding myself I m to focus on my holiness, not my husband s. What if marriage is to teach me selflessness rather than to meet all my needs? What if the holiness of love means being patient and kind, not irritable or rude? What if instead of keeping score of kitchen duty I simply did my husband s (without counting)? What if I offered empathy, not criticism; respect, not resentment? And what if walking in holiness leads to greater happiness? To such a change in perspective, I say, I do! Heidi Mann SUMMER FLOWERS Behold the flowers of June! How fair and bright their buds appear, as, opening to the summer air, our eyes and hearts they cheer! Who would have thought there could abound such beauty and delight beneath the cold and wintry ground that hid those flowers from sight? That power which made and governs all the mighty power of God alone could life and beauty call out of the lifeless sod.
