2 SEPTEMBER 24, 2017 TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME St. Luke Parish Rev. Danilo Soriano Pastor Religious Education Tel: 630/ Parish Office Tel: 630/ Parish Office Website: Philippians 1:20c-24, 27a By Virginia Smith Our long exposure to Paul s Letter to the Romans in this liturgical cycle can lead us to believe that its tone is typical of all Pauline writings. Now, however, we are reading his Letter to the Philippians, written a year or two earlier, and may notice a much more personal quality to Paul s words. That is quite probably due to Paul s patent fondness for the community at Philippi. These are his friends, and he is comfortable sharing with them his concerns in a way he couldn t with the Romans whom he had yet to meet. Paul writes from prison. Although the locale is unclear, Ephesus perhaps, the sentiments are universal for a person faced with the possible imminence of death. As Christians, we will all come to that point in our lives sometime and can only hope our sentiments will be as noble as Paul s. For Paul, death is gain. How many of us can honestly say that? It s surprising how seldom one hears anyone speak of their eagerness to see God, of a sense of exile here, of a feeling of homesickness for our eternal home. Paul apparently feels all of that acutely. On the other hand, if he were to remain on earth, he sees so much more he could do to serve the God he loves deeply. Elsewhere, in a portion of Romans not read this year, he puts it another way, None of us lives for oneself, and no one dies for oneself. For if we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord. So then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord s. It leaves us wondering what we live and die for; more importantly, who we live and die for. 2008, OCP. All rights reserved. Matthew 20:1-16a By Fr. Eugene Hensell, OSB This parable is known as "The Laborers in the Vineyard." It is very challenging to the interpreter because it appears to be saying that God is not just. Workers who labor in the vineyard all day get exactly the same pay as those who came late and labored only a few hours. To add insult to injury, those who came to work last get paid first. The material surrounding this parable show Jesus' disciples asking about the rewards of discipleship and then jockeying for places of honor. The parable itself functions to offset that misguided attitude. On one level the parable teaches that God is not fair, at least not by human standards. Humans firmly believe that some people are more deserving than others. God, on the other hand, loves all humans indiscriminately. This parable reads differently depending into which group the reader locates himself or herself. Most readers see themselves as those who have worked the longest, deserve to be paid the most, and warrant being paid first. However, God doesn't seem so bad to the reader who worked only a few hours, deserves to get paid the least, and warrants being paid last. The point of the parable is that God is not fair. But God is radically generous and that offends many humans. God seems to enjoy turning upside down the systems we have created to show why God should love some people more than others. A further point this parable makes is that whatever God has given us is not because of who we are but because of who God is. 2005, OCP. All rights reserved.

Gospel The last will be first, and the first will be last (Matthew 20:1-16a). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Ezr 1:1-6; Ps 126:1b-6; Lk 8:16-18 Tuesday: Ezr 6:7-8, 12b, 14-20; Ps 122:1-5; Lk 8:19-21 Wednesday: Ezr 9:5-9; Tb:13:2, 3-4abefghn, 7-8; Lk 9:1-6 Thursday: Hg 1:1-8; Ps 149:1b-6a, 9b; Lk 9:7-9 Friday: Dn 7:9-10, or Rv 12:7-12a; Ps 138:1-5; Jn 1:47-51 Saturday: Zec 2:5-9, 14-15a; Jer 31:10-12ab, 13; Lk 9:43b-45 Sunday: Ez 18:25-28; Ps 25:4-9; Phil 2:1-11 [1-5]; Mt 21:28-32 SACRISTANS NEEDED We are in need of more sacristans. These men and ladies are very special people, but are in need of more help. They have a very special ministry of making sure the church is set up for on the weekend. There are usually two sacristans at every. They arrive one hour before and stay until the work is complete after. The only other time you will be needed is Monday morning to set up for the following weekend. Extra time may be needed during Advent and Lent. The Sacristans truly are a team and work as a team. You would not be alone. Training will be provided. It is a very rewarding volunteer position. Please consider and pray about this ministry. Call the office for more information. The ministry of a sacristan is a bit like the work of a weaver. In order for all the members of a community of faith to take their full, conscious and active part in liturgical celebrations, there needs to be someone who prepares and oversees the things of the liturgy...the sacristan is to know the meaning and purpose of the liturgy as well as the needs of the particular liturgical assembly, and to work carefully to see the liturgy s ends realized by providing the members of the assembly with the tools they need [for a meaningful, prayerful, and active celebration]. Remember UR ChURch. Without volunteers, we would be lost. TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Do not be resentful. The Gospel story of the landowner hiring workers throughout the day tells us that it does not matter who is last and who is first. Though we may resent this behavior, though we may say unfair - it does not matter. Astonishing! In the kingdom of heaven - and we live in it already today - God is generous. Always. Each of us is given much more than we could ever earn. Always. We must be grateful. Always. REASONS FOR CONVERSION Conversion is a lifelong process. We all convert throughout our lives. Join Kevin Donahoe and Mark Donovan as we all explore new convert stories as well as our own conversion stories in Jericho at 9:30 until 10:50 on September 17th and 24th. You are welcome to share some reasons for your belief. We look forward to seeing you. What resentment(s) must I give up? How can I be even more generous? Who needs my generosity today?
5 PET BLESSING CCW CASH CARDS Every October 4th the Church celebrates the feast of St. Francis of Assisi who was the founder of the Franciscan Order of Religious. Francis has been known as a "mover and shaker" of society at his time both in the eyes of the Church and the civic world. Among the many facts about St. Francis was that he loved and respected nature - both animal and plant. In his honor on Saturday, September 30th at 11:00am, all pets are welcome to be brought to the parish parking lot for a special blessing. Please feel free to bring any type pet; cats, dogs, fish, rabbits, birds, mice, etc. We just ask that you stay by your cars with your pets and have them caged or on a leash. Father Soriano will come to each one and extend a blessing. After your pet has been blessed you are free to leave. Loving Father, we praise you and thank you for making animals as part of your wonderful creation. Help us and all people to be kind to animals. Touch the hearts of all with your love and increase our respect for all your creation. We ask this through Christ our Lord, through whom you made all things for your glory THERE S A LEAF FOR THAT Thanks to everyone who came to CCW Fall Hospitality We enjoyed meeting and visiting with you while you munched on those delicious doughnuts. A special thank you to all those who picked a leaf you make the difference. Cash Card orders are due back next weekend. We will give you all that you need to participate. Join us as we pray for our families, our parish, and our country. Please sign up in the back of church so we can be sure to have enough refreshments afterwards. BIBLE STUDY We hear the Psalms read or sung at every between the first and second readings, but do we understand their significance? They are at the heart of the Bible, prayers from God that help us learn to pray. The Holy Spirit inspired them. Israel sang them. Christ himself prayed them, as did our Blessed Mother. These sacred hymns become our heartfelt response to God s loving and wondrous deeds for us. Their words captivate the imagination and draw us into a deeply personal encounter with God. To learn more about this beautiful book of the Bible join us for Psalms: The School of Prayer (by Jeff Cavins, Sarah Christmyer, and Dr. Tim Gray) in the Parish Center beginning October 8th from a.m. and continuing every Sunday for 6 weeks. Sign up on the clipboard in the hallway entrance of church. If you have questions call Gail at 630/ or sandersgvjp@comcast.net. NEW PLAQUE Vicki Collier, our 2nd grade religious education teacher was asked by her niece if her 2nd graders would write to a friend of hers named Lisa, a Master Sergeant of the Air Force who was deployed to the Middle East in Jordan. Of course the kids said YES! They made cards for her and she was so surprised to get the cards and all the cute notes of encouragement and prayers for her safety that she wanted to do something for the children. So she dedicated a plaque to St. Luke Parish so the children would know how much she appreciated the cards. How sweet was that? If you would like to see it, it is hanging in the hallway by the stairs, next to our flag. Thank you Ms. Collier and your 2nd grade class for making someone feel so special!
7 30 TH ANNUAL BISHOP S MASS WITH PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES On Sunday October 8 th at 12:00 at Holy Family, Shorewood, Bishop Conlon and the diocesan community will celebrate the gifts and presence of members of the Diocese of Joliet living with disabilities. All persons with disabilities, their families, friends and supporters are invited to participate in the and to stay for the luncheon that follows, provided by the Knights of Columbus. For more information, please call Karen at 815/ ST. VINCENT DE PAUL HAS A NEW FAMILY TO HELP A family with young kids needs your help. If you have the ability to help with a small donation dropped into one of the donation boxes, please do so. If you would rather donate toothpaste, toothbrushes, cereal, paper towels, plates, tissue, cups with plastic lids, or gift cards for food that would be wonderful. Thank you from The St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Luke Parish. POVERTY AND CHILDREN S HEALTH What is poverty? Families in the U.S. are considered living in poverty if they have an income below 100% of the federal poverty level [FPL]. In 2017, a family of four with an income of $24,600 or less would be considered poor. The FPL number is what allows families to qualify for many services and programs to assist them in getting their basic needs met. The formula used to figure out the FPL was developed in 1963 and used emergency food costs to determine how much a family would need to live at a bare minimum. While there have been adjustments to the way that we calculate the FPL number, this basic formula is still being used to decide who is poor. Most scholars agree that the poverty line is set far too low and that it also does not account for expenses like childcare, commuting and utilities that have grown since the 1960 s. Even with our poverty line set so low, the U. S. has one of the highest poverty rates of any industrialized country in the world. In Illinois, over 1/3 of people are considered low income or living in poverty. Children are impacted more than any other group by poverty. According to 2014 Census data: About 21.1% of all US children younger than 18 years lived in households designated as poor. Nearly 9.3% lived in households of deep poverty (incomes below 50% of the FPL). 16 million children lived in families who received Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Between 2007 and 2010, foreclosures affected 5.3 million children. How does poverty impact kids? Poverty affects children s bodies and health. Poverty means that kids may not know where their next meal is coming from, have safe and stable housing, feel safe on their block, or have fully funded schools. Poverty is associated with higher rates of stress and many health issues, like asthma, obesity, low birth-weight, high blood pressure, and accidental injuries. Poverty in the United States is an issue that we care about as people of faith. Our religious bodies and congregations have programs, services and missions that help to relieve poverty in our neighborhoods and advocate for healthy and just economic and social conditions. Our moral imperative to end poverty is more important than ever. Prayer: May we be instruments of justice for our children so that they have what they need to thrive. 9/2017 Is poverty really a problem?
