1 January 2019 The official newsletter of the Church of the Epiphany Welcoming all, we are building a dedicated Christian community that seeks to know God and to serve others. Report on the 242nd Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of New York November 9-10, 2018 submitted by Carron Donohue and Jason Rios Attending the Diocesan Convention for Epiphany were the Rev. Jennifer Reddall, and Vestry members Carron Donohue and Jason Rios. For a report on deliberations, ministries, resolutions passed, elections won and full texts of speeches by Bishops Dietsche, Shin and Glasspool, and for a closer look at all the ways your Diocese and others do God s work throughout the world, please visit: convention report Bishop Andrew Dietsche opened Saturday s session by commenting on the remarkable beginning to the convention on Friday the best ever according to many! First was a session on racism that asked each participant to recount a personal experience with racism. That was followed by a performance of Chuck Kramer s play New York Lamentation, directed by Jeannine Otis. The play is a result of a resolution passed at last year s convention naming 2018 a Year of Lamentations, concentrating on the ongoing study of our Diocese and history of the involvement in slavery and its old and new incarnations. It asked the Episcopal Church to hold a mirror up to itself and do the hard work of recognizing, reflecting and taking actionable measures towards reconciling our failings. The early evening brought A Liturgy for Listening and Lamentation and the sacred solemn telling of stories of abuse and the sexualization of power in our own diocese. Said Bishop Dietcshe, All of this became a way of our entering into a convention in which all of our business can take place in the light of Beloved Community and our call to the fullness of the Christian life. On Saturday there were special reports on the progress of several ministries, on budgets, elections and special committees. A number of resolutions were passed including; the condemning of prolonged solitary confinement as a form of torture; next steps for the Diocese of New York after lamentations; minimum clergy compensation and a resolution from the floor from St. John s Church, Pleasantville, which calls upon all churches, synagogues, temples, and religious institutions, that no matter what the individual stand on immigration may be, we do everything in our power, both communally and individually, to prevent bloodshed at the meeting of the caravan and the border. Bishop Shin reviewed highlights of the General Convention in Austin, TX held earlier this year that included listening to #MeToo movement stories; the passing of a resolution that made same sex marriage available to gay couples in those dioceses whose bishops had so far opted out; and the reception of the Episcopal Church of Cuba back into The Episcopal Church. Said Bishop Shin, [the Church] was perhaps wrongfully removed from The Episcopal Church seventy some years ago. This was a moment of joyful tears all around. In closing, he said, Being empowered by the loving, liberating and life giving God, let us stand up for justice, practice mercy and spread the love of Christ to bring healing to the world that is broken by fear, hatred and violence. I yearn for the day when the Church on earth may truly be the Beloved Community Jesus intended it to be. Bishop Mary Glasspool then invited attendees to reflect together on one aspect of God s Mission for the Church. Said Bishop Glasspool, I ve been thinking a lot about Building Beloved Community, and how we go about doing that. Given the brokenness and woundedness of so much in our Church and in our Culture, how do we reconcile the world to God through Christ? What is our role in the ministry of reconciliation? Citing scripture and examples of people doing just that, she concluded that the gift of reconciliation is God s. Our part is to bear fruit that befits repentance. Our part is to respect and care for the earth, for each other, and for ourselves. Our part is to strive for justice and peace, and respect the dignity of every human being. There were videos and reports on several ministries and activities that exemplify Building Beloved Community, which you can see on the website referenced above. It is difficult to summarize this inspiring convention into a few short paragraphs. Let us leave you with Bishop Dietsche s closing remarks. Let us go back from this convention to the people we serve and the congregations where we make our lives and shape and nurture the people who share our lives. Let us practice being Christian so that in the hour when it matters, when everything everywhere is on the line, we will be good at it. And if they drive nails in us like they did to Jesus, it will be okay. For we will reveal the miracle and wonder that is the Beloved Community. And live and die in charity with all the world. Amen. Raising My Voice Kin Graduation and Lunch submitted by Carron Donohue & Deborah Wilburn They will know us by our love for one another. John 13:35 Once again, Epiphany, in conjunction with Circles of Support, successfully hosted Raising My Voice Kin a four week program held this past October for parents, spouses, siblings and other loved ones of people who are currently incarcerated. Participants learn how to tell their story in a safe, supportive space surrounded by people with a shared experience. Five participants discussed their personal experiences with the justice system, including improving relationships with parole officers, appropriate behavior with arresting officers, and the heart breaking experiences of loved ones, forgotten by the justice system, ignored by support services and left voiceless. The program s purpose is to teach public speaking and leadership training, enabling participants to speak at schools, community groups and other venues where their stories will have an impact. In hosting the program at Epiphany, participants have the opportunity to experience God s love as they are welcomed into our place of worship. Epiphany s leadership in a program that has proven successful in lowering crime and recidivism rates helps us fulfill our mission as Christians. It helps us broaden our connection to the faith and legal communities, which are continuously expanding efforts to bring social justice where it is sorely needed. Many thanks to our volunteer coaches, Betty Blessing, Jason Rios, Deacon Sanchez Shabazz, and Caroline Schley. Save the Dates! Spiritual Direction and Creative Arts Group Lenten Series Tuesdays March :30-8:30pm A simple thought can be a poem. A stick figure can convey emotion. That s what many participants have experienced in sessions sponsored by our Spiritual Direction and Creative Arts Group. They know when we say, no experience in the arts necessary, we mean it. So please join us for our March Lenten series. Sessions open with prayer and meditation, include time for creative expression, and end with the sharing of ideas and snacks. All members of the congregation are welcome to take part. For more information, please Carron Donohue (carron.aon@gmail.com) or Deborah Wilburn (dajwilburn@yahoo.com).
