More info at Holy Women, Holy Men November 10 Leo the Great, Bishop of Rome, 461 When Leo was born, about the year 400, the Western Roman Empire was almost in shambles. Weakened by barbarian invasions and by a totally inefficient economic and political system, the structure that had been carefully built by Augustus had become a chaos of internal warfare, subversion, and corruption. The social and political situation notwithstanding, Leo received a good education, and was ordained deacon, with the responsibility of looking after Church possessions, managing the grain dole, and generally administering finances. He won considerable respect for his abilities, and a contemporary of his, Cassian, described him as the ornament of the Roman Church and the divine ministry. In 440, Leo was unanimously elected Pope, despite the fact that he was absent at the time on a mission in Gaul. His ability as a preacher shows clearly in the 96 sermons still Volunteers Needed for Wednesdays The Wednesday Homeless Dinner Program has experienced a big change: Joan Popovitch, who supervised the 4:00 6:00pm early shift, retired in September. No one can replace her, but we need some new volunteers to keep things running smoothly. The early shift volunteers make salad, cut bread, get the dessert ready and do all the set up work for the dinner. Scheduling is flexible: you can come one or two Wednesdays a month or every week, depending on your availability and enthusiasm. If this interests you, please Janette Gautier (janettegautier@verizon.net) or call the church office at extant, in which he expounds doctrine, encourages almsgiving, and deals with various heresies, including the Pelagian and the Manichean systems. In Gaul, Africa, and Spain, Leo s strong hand was felt as he issued orders to limit the powers of one over presumptuous bishop, confirmed the rights of another bishop over his vicars, and selected candidates for holy orders. Leo s letter to the Council of Chalcedon in 451 dealt so effectively with the doctrine of the human and divine natures of the One Person of Christ that the assembled bishops declared, Peter has spoken by Leo, and affirmed his definition as orthodox teaching. (See page 864 of the Prayer Book.) With similar strength of spirit and wisdom, Leo negotiated with Attila when the Huns were about to sack Rome. He persuaded them to withdraw from Italy and to accept an annual tribute. Three years later, Genseric led the Vandals against Rome. Again Leo negotiated. Unable to prevent pillaging by the barbarians, he did dissuade them from burning the city and slaughtering its inhabitants. He worked, thereafter, to repair the damage, to replace the holy vessels in the desecrated churches, and to restore the morale of the Roman people.

6 Collects of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. All Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. Almighty God, to whom we must account for all our powers and privileges: Guide the people of the United States in the election of officials and representatives; that, by faithful administration and wise laws, the rights of all may be protected and our nation be enabled to fulfill your purposes; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The people are seated. The Word of God First Reading Wisdom of Solomon 3:1 9 The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be a disaster, and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in the sight of others they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself; like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt offering he accepted them. In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble. They will govern nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord will reign over them forever. Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones, and he watches over his elect. 2

7 Reader People The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 24 Domini est terra refrain J. Robert Carroll verses Joseph Gelineau The people repeat the refrain after the choir, and then sing it where indicated. The LORD s is the earth and its fullness, the world, and those who dwell in it. It is God who set it on the seas; who made it firm on the waters. Who shall climb the mountain of the LORD? Who shall stand in God s holy place? Those with clean hands and pure heart, who desire not worthless things. REFRAIN They shall receive blessings from the LORD, and reward from the God who saves them. These are the ones who, seek the face of the God of Jacob. O gates, lift high your heads; grow higher, ancient doors. Let the king of glory enter! REFRAIN Who is the king of glory? The LORD, the mighty, the valiant; the LORD, the valiant in war. O gates, lift high your heads; grow higher, ancient doors. Let the king of glory enter! Who is the king of glory? The LORD of the heavenly hosts, This is the king of glory. REFRAIN Second Reading Revelation 21:1 6a I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them as their God; 3

8 they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away." And the one who was seated on the throne said, "See, I am making all things new." Also he said, "Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true." Then he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end." Reader People The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Sequence Libera me Alex Bonnin, bass Gabriel Fauré Libera me, Domine, de morte æterna, Deliver me, O Lord, from eternal death in die illa tremenda, in die illa: on that fearful day, quando coeli movendi sunt et terra. when the heavens and the earth are moved, dum veneris judicare saeculum per ignem. when you shall come to judge the world by fire. Tremens factus sum ego, et timeo, I tremble and fear, when your judgment comes, dum discussio venerit, atque ventura ira. and the coming wrath. Dies illa, dies iræ, calamitatis et miseriæ, That day of wrath, calamity, and misery, dies illa, dies magna et amara valde. that day of great and exceeding bitterness. Requiem æternam dona eis, Domine: Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord: et lux perpetua luceat eis. and let light perpetual shine on them. Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Gospel John 11:32 44 Deacon Horace Whyte When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see." Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?" Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days." Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?" So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, "Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me." When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go." Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. 4

Please stand and join in singing: Presentation Hymn 397 Now thank we all our God stanza 3 Nun danket alle Gott Great Thanksgiving Enriching Our Worship Eucharistic Prayer 2 Celebrant We praise you and we bless you, holy and gracious God, source of life abundant. From before time you made ready the creation. Your Spirit moved over the deep and brought all things into being: sun, moon, and stars; earth, winds, and waters; and every living thing. You made us in your image, and taught us to walk in your ways. But we rebelled against you, and wandered far away; and yet, as a mother cares for her children, you would not forget us. Time and again you called us to live in the fullness of your love. And so this day we join with Saints and Angels in the chorus of praise that rings through eternity, lifting our voices to magnify you as we sing: 7

12 Sanctus Sung by the choir Gabriel Fauré Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth, Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Holy, holy, holy Lord God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. The people may remain standing or kneel. Celebrant Glory and honor and praise to you, holy and living God. To deliver us from the power of sin and death and to reveal the riches of your grace, you looked with favor upon Mary, your willing servant, that she might conceive and bear a son, Jesus the holy child of God. Living among us, Jesus loved us. He broke bread with outcasts and sinners, healed the sick, and proclaimed good news to the poor. He yearned to draw all the world to himself yet we were heedless of his call to walk in love. Then the time came for him to complete upon the cross the sacrifice of his life, and to be glorified by you. On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at table with his friends. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, and said: Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again he gave thanks to you, gave it to them, and said: Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Now gathered at your table, O God of all creation, and remembering Christ crucified and risen, who was and is and is to come, we offer to you our gifts of bread and wine, and ourselves, a living sacrifice. Pour out your Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Body and blood of Christ. Breathe your Spirit over the whole earth and make us your new creation, the Body of Christ given for the world you have made. In the fullness of time bring us, with all your saints, from every tribe and language and people and nation, to feast at the banquet prepared from the foundation of the world. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN. Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. 8

13 Breaking of the Bread The Celebrant breaks the bread, and a period of silence may be kept, then all sing: Celebrant People Invitation to Communion Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. At the Communion All baptized persons are welcome to receive. Children are welcome, and parents should indicate whether a small child receives. Please receive the wafer of bread in your open and outstretched hands. Take hold of the chalice firmly and guide it to your lips. If you prefer to receive by intinction, please dip the wafer in the wine, or offer the wafer to the Chalice Bearer, who will dip it in the wine for you. Communion Music Agnus Dei Sung by the choir Gabriel Fauré Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, sempiternam requiem. Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine: Cum sanctis tuis in aeternum, quia pius es. Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis.
