The Twenty-fifth Sunday after Pentecost November 11, 2018 Welcome to the Church of the Epiphany Welcoming all, we are building a dedicated Christian community that seeks to know God and to serve others. If you are new to Epiphany, welcome! If you would like to stay connected, please fill out a welcome card and place it in the offering plate, or give it to an usher or clergyperson. We hope you leave inspired and refreshed and that you return soon. Please stay for coffee hour at the rear of the church following the service, and look for a welcomer wearing a purple and blue nametag if you have any questions or just want to see a friendly face! Children of any age are welcome at worship. Feel free to sit near the front of the church, left of the center aisle, so they can see and follow what is going on. Crayons and a paper based on the scripture for today are available from an usher. If your child becomes restless, we also have a quiet area in the rear of the nave with a sofa and soft toys. Please feel free to go there where you may supervise their quiet play and continue to participate in the service. Sunday School for children ages 3 10 begins at 10:30am downstairs in the purple classroom. They return to join the service after the offering. If you have toddlers with you, childcare is provided for children under age three on Sundays from 9:30 am to 12 noon in the nursery downstairs in the green room. 6 Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. All O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; 2

where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. All are seated. The Word of God First Reading 1 Kings 17:8 16 Robert Shields The word of the LORD came to Elijah, saying, Go now to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and live there; for I have commanded a widow there to feed you. So he set out and went to Zarephath. When he came to the gate of the town, a widow was there gathering sticks; he called to her and said, Bring me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink. As she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand. But she said, As the LORD your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a jug; I am now gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go home and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die. Elijah said to her, Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said; but first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterwards make something for yourself and your son. For thus says the LORD the God of Israel: The jar of meal will not be emptied and the jug of oil will not fail until the day that the LORD sends rain on the earth. She went and did as Elijah said, so that she as well as he and her household ate for many days. The jar of meal was not emptied, neither did the jug of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD that he spoke by Elijah. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Psalm 146 Lauda, anima mea Peter R. Hallock ( ) The people repeat the refrain after the choir and then sing it where indicated. Hallelujah! Praise the LORD, O my soul! * I will praise the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. Put not your trust in rulers, nor in any child of earth, * for there is no help in them. When they breathe their last, they return to earth, * and in that day their thoughts perish. REFRAIN Happy are they who have the God of Jacob for their help! * whose hope is in the LORD their God; Who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in them; * who keeps his promise for ever; REFRAIN 3

Who gives justice to those who are oppressed, * and food to those who hunger. The LORD sets the prisoners free; the LORD opens the eyes of the blind; * the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down; REFRAIN The LORD loves the righteous; the LORD cares for the stranger; * he sustains the orphan and widow, but frustrates the way of the wicked. The LORD shall reign for ever, * your God, O Zion, throughout all generations. Hallelujah! REFRAIN Second Reading Hebrews 9:24 28 Helen Goodkin Christ did not enter a sanctuary made by human hands, a mere copy of the true one, but he entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. Nor was it to offer himself again and again, as the high priest enters the Holy Place year after year with blood that is not his own; for then he would have had to suffer again and again since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the age to remove sin by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Please stand and join in singing: Sequence Hymn 53 Once he came in blessing Gottes Sohn ist kommen Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Gospel Mark 12:38 44 Deacon Horace Whyte As Jesus taught, he said, Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! They devour widows houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation. He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. 4

Alleluia Sung twice Holy Feast Larry J. Long (b. 1954) Sermon Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Reverend Jennifer A. Reddall 5

For the peace and unity of the Church of God; For all who proclaim the Gospel, and all who seek the Truth. For Michael, our Presiding Bishop, and Andrew, Allen, and Mary our Bishops; and for all bishops and other ministers; For all who serve God in his Church. For the special needs and concerns of this congregation. Silence ~ The People may add their own petitions. Hear us, Lord; For your mercy is great. We pray for all who have died, that they may have a place in your eternal kingdom. Silence ~ The People may add their own petitions. Amen. Celebrant Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. 6

The Peace Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you. The ministers and people may greet one other in the name of the Lord, then all are seated. The Holy Communion Offertory Anthem Praise the Lord, O my soul Thomas Tomkins ( ) Praise the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits. Please stand and join in singing: Presentation Hymn 397 Now thank we all our God stanza 3 Nun danket alle Gott Great Thanksgiving Enriching Our Worship Eucharistic Prayer 2 Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. 7

Celebrant We praise you and we bless you, holy and gracious God, source of life abundant. From before time you made ready the creation. Your Spirit moved over the deep and brought all things into being: sun, moon, and stars; earth, winds, and waters; and every living thing. You made us in your image, and taught us to walk in your ways. But we rebelled against you, and wandered far away; and yet, as a mother cares for her children, you would not forget us. Time and again you called us to live in the fullness of your love. And so this day we join with Saints and Angels in the chorus of praise that rings through eternity, lifting our voices to magnify you as we sing: Sanctus S 128 William Mathias ( ) The people may remain standing or kneel. Celebrant Glory and honor and praise to you, holy and living God. To deliver us from the power of sin and death and to reveal the riches of your grace, you looked with favor upon Mary, your willing servant, that she might conceive and bear a son, Jesus the holy child of God. Living among us, Jesus loved us. He broke bread with outcasts and sinners, healed the sick, and proclaimed good news to the poor. He yearned to draw all the world to himself yet we were heedless of his call to walk in love. Then the time came for him to complete upon the cross the sacrifice of his life, and to be glorified by you. On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at table with his friends. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, and said: Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again he gave thanks to you, gave it to them, and said: Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. 8

Now gathered at your table, O God of all creation, and remembering Christ crucified and risen, who was and is and is to come, we offer to you our gifts of bread and wine, and ourselves, a living sacrifice. Pour out your Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Body and blood of Christ. Breathe your Spirit over the whole earth and make us your new creation, the Body of Christ given for the world you have made. In the fullness of time bring us, with all your saints, from every tribe and language and people and nation, to feast at the banquet prepared from the foundation of the world. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN. Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread S 160 Lamb of God Mass XVIII, arr. Richard Proulx ( ) The Celebrant breaks the bread, and a period of silence may be kept. Then all sing: Invitation to Communion Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. At the Communion All baptized persons are welcome to receive, including children at the discretion of their parents. Children are always welcome, and parents should indicate whether a small child receives communion or a blessing. Please receive the wafer of bread in your open and outstretched hands. Take hold of the chalice firmly and guide it to your lips. If you prefer to receive by intinction, please dip the wafer in the wine, or offer the wafer to the Chalice Bearer, who will dip it in the wine for you. If you find the steps to the altar rail are difficult, remain at the bottom of the steps and the clergy will bring communion to you. 9

Communion Anthem The Beatitudes Philip W. J. Stopford (b. 1977) Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Matthew 5:3 12 Sending Forth of Lay Eucharistic Visitors to Memorial Sloan Kettering, New York Presbyterian, and the homebound All Janet Boe, Louise Bozorth, Helen Goodkin, Marsha Harper, and Cynthia Rockland, in the name of this congregation, we send you forth bearing these holy gifts, that those to whom you go may share with us in the communion of Christ s body and blood. We who are many are one body, because we all share one bread, one cup. Amen. Postcommunion Prayer Enriching Our Worship Celebrant Let us pray. All Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image and nourishing us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of Christ s Body and Blood. Now send us forth a people, forgiven, healed, renewed; that we may proclaim your love to the world and continue in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen.
