1 December 2018 Prepare the Way of the Lord The Reverend Jennifer A. Reddall There s a voice in the wilderness crying, a call from the ways untrod Prepare in the desert a highway, a highway for our God! The valleys shall be exalted, the lofty hills brought low, Make straight all the crooked places where the Lord our God may go. Hymnal 1982, no. 75 I love that Advent hymn about John the Baptist. The voice cries out in the wilderness, the way is prepared, and the Word is born. Advent is a season of hope and waiting and preparation. It s a season of anticipation for big celebratory events, and also a season of darkness and reflection. It s a season when we are reminded that even when we are scared or lost or sinful or cannot see the way ahead, God and God s prophets pave the way and we find our footsteps moving forward towards incredibly joy. What a perfect season for us at Epiphany. There is much to prepare for. I just transferred my sermons folder into my icloud drive. 555 sermons made the leap from Epiphany s server to my own, so that I can take them with me and build on their imagery and wisdom in Arizona. I am making up a binder of The official newsletter of the Church of the Epiphany Welcoming all, we are building a dedicated Christian community that seeks to know God and to serve others. information on all our programs and the role of the rector in them to help out whoever is sitting in my chair in early And I just got off a call with Arizonan leaders in our border ministry initiative there, Cruzando Fronteras, who are doing vital work sheltering and supporting migrants on both sides of the border to show them Christ s compassion, welcome, and love and who are preparing for an even greater influx of migrants in the coming weeks. The Vestry is preparing for my departure but also for a lengthy and deep process of architectural design with the congregation, staff, and Day School. They are preparing to lead a congregation that is no longer so financially vulnerable, where you can invest in program and ministry and staff so that the congregation will thrive and grow. They are preparing to bring in an Interim Rector who will help make straight some of the crooked places in our congregation and systems, and love and shepherd this flock into your new home. This is all such good news! Being your Rector (and Associate Rector, and Priest in Charge) has been an incredible honor and joy. I will say thank you at many times and in many ways over the next four weeks, but let it begin now: thank you for letting me be your Rector and grow with you and thank you for all the myriad ways in which you seek and serve to follow the Gospel. For the word of our God endureth, the arm of the Lord is strong, He stands in the midst of nations, and he will right the wrong. He shall feed his flock like a shepherd, the lambs he ll gently hold; To pastures of peace he ll lead them, and bring them safe to his fold. 2 2 Music Notes for December Larry J. Long, Organist & Choirmaster Sabbatical Postponed Due to the sale of our church building, and where we will be in the design and planning process of our new church building, my sabbatical has been placed on hold. Since I ve already booked some of the travel, I will still be away February 19 March 11, 2019, first to Australia and then to Phoenix for the Rev. Jennifer Reddall s consecration as Bishop of Arizona. Otherwise, I will be here working. The Vestry and I will figure how to reschedule the remainder of my sabbatical once the building design process is further underway. Burleigh was an African American composer and singer who wrote many choral arrangements of Spiritual songs sung by American slaves. His grandfather, Hamilton Waters, purchased his and his mother s freedom from slavery in Maryland for $55 in Hamilton taught his grandson traditional slaves songs. At age 26 Burleigh began attending the National Conservatory of Music in NYC, with the help of a scholarship from Frances MacDowell (mother of composer Edward MacDowell). The conservatory was directed by Czech composer Antonín Dvořák. Burleigh began composing art songs in 1898 and was well known for them by the He also composed the hymn tune McKee in our Hymnal 1982, with the hymn text In Christ there is no east or west, which we sing here at Epiphany. Epiphany Choir sings his arrangement of My Lord, what a mornin in the morning on December 2 and also at Lessons and Carols the next Sunday. At our Advent Festival of Lessons and Carols on December 9 the Epiphany Choir is singing the familiar Medieval text Adam lay ybounden in a new ish setting by John Cantrell, which he wrote in John is a friend of mine and serves as Choirmaster & Organist at St. Michael s Episcopal Church, at the corner of West 99th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. His setting begins with a driving, repeated rhythm in the tenor and bass parts, with the sopranos and altos singing A dam very coolly in long notes above them. John s interest and experience in jazz and pop music as well as traditional classical and church music is merged together in this wonderful arrangement. I know you will enjoy it as much as the choir is excited to be learning to sing it.
