Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. All Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. All are seated. 2

The Word of God First Reading Isaiah 43:1 7 Larry Johnson Thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my sight, and honored, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life. Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you; I will say to the north, Give them up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring my sons from far away and my daughters from the end of the earth everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Psalm 29 Afferte Domino refrain Larry J. Long verses S. S. Wesley The people repeat the refrain after the choir and then sing the refrain where indicated. Ascribe to the LORD, you gods, * ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his Name; * worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness. The voice of the LORD is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders; * the LORD is upon the mighty waters. The voice of the LORD is a powerful voice; * the voice of the LORD is a voice of splendor. REFRAIN 3

The voice of the LORD breaks the cedar trees; * the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon; He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, * and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox. REFRAIN The voice of the LORD splits the flames of fire; the voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; * the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the LORD makes the oak trees writhe * and strips the forests bare. And in the temple of the LORD * all are crying, Glory! REFRAIN The LORD sits enthroned above the flood; * the LORD sits enthroned as King for evermore. The LORD shall give strength to his people; * the LORD shall give his people the blessing of peace. REFRAIN Second Reading Acts 8:14 17 Gregg Swain When the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. The two went down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit (for as yet the Spirit had not come upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus). Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. All who are able, please stand and join in singing: Sequence Hymn Crashing waters at creation Stuttgart 4

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Gospel Luke 3:15 17, Deacon Horace Whyte As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. Alleluia Sung twice Holy Feast Larry J. Long (b. 1954) Sermon The Reverend Dr. J. Barrington Bates Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. 5

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the People Form III BCP, page 387 Sarah Krell Leader Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; People That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. Give to the departed eternal rest; Let light perpetual shine upon them. We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others. Silence The People may add their own petitions. All Almighty and eternal God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth: Mercifully accept the prayers of your people, and strengthen us to do your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 6

Confession and Forgiveness Deacon Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence may be kept. All Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Celebrant Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Peace Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you. The ministers and people may greet one another in the name of the Lord, then all are seated. The Holy Communion Offertory Anthem Wade in the water Spiritual, arr. Bruce Trinkley (b. 1949) Wade in the water. Wade in the water children. Wade in the water. God s a gonna trouble the water. See that band all dressed in white. See that band all dressed in red. God s a gonna trouble the water. God s a gonna trouble the water. The leader looks like an Israelite. It looks like the band that Moses led. God s a gonna trouble the water. God s a gonna trouble the water. Please stand and join in singing: Presentation Hymn 124 What star is this with beams so bright stanza 5 Puer nobis 7

Great Thanksgiving Enriching Our Worship Eucharistic Prayer 3 Celebrant All thanks and praise are yours at all times and in all places, our true and loving God; through Jesus Christ, your eternal Word, the Wisdom from on high by whom you created all things. You laid the foundations of the world and enclosed the sea when it burst out from the womb; you brought forth all creatures of the earth and gave breath to humankind. Wondrous are you, Holy One of Blessing, all you create is a sign of hope for our journey; and so as the morning stars sing your praises we join the heavenly beings and all creation as we shout for joy: Sanctus LEVAS 255 A Mass for a Soulful People Grayson Warren Brown (b. 1948) 8

The people may remain standing or kneel. Celebrant Glory and honor are yours, Creator of all, your Word has never been silent; you call a people to yourself, as a light to the nations, you delivered them from bondage and led them to a land of promise. Of your grace, you gave Jesus to be human, to share our life, to proclaim the coming of your holy reign and give himself for us, a fragrant offering. Through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, you have freed us from sin, brought us into your life, reconciled us to you, and restored us to the glory you intend for us. We thank you that on the night before he died for us Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, gave to his friends and said: Take, eat, this is my Body, broken for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper Jesus took the cup of wine, said the blessing, gave it to his friends and said: Drink this, all of you: this cup is the new Covenant in my Blood, poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. And so, remembering all that was done for us: the cross, the tomb, the resurrection and ascension, longing for Christ s coming in glory, and presenting to you these gifts your earth has formed and human hands have made, we acclaim you, O Christ: All Dying, you destroyed our death. Rising, you restored our life. Christ Jesus, come in glory! Celebrant Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts of bread and wine that they may be to us the Body and Blood of your Christ. Grant that we, burning with your Spirit s power, may be a people of hope, justice, and love. Giver of Life, draw us together in the Body of Christ, and in the fullness of time gather us with all your people into the joy of our true eternal home. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, we worship you our God and Creator in voices of unending praise. All Blessed are you now and for ever. Amen. Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say: All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. 9

Breaking of the Bread S 164 Lamb of God Holy Feast Larry J. Long The Celebrant breaks the bread, and a period of silence may be kept, then all sing: Invitation to Communion Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. At the Communion All baptized persons are welcome to receive communion. Children are welcome, and parents should indicate whether a small child receives. Please receive the wafer of bread in your open and outstretched hands. Take hold of the chalice firmly and guide it to your lips. If you prefer to receive by intinction, please dip the wafer in the wine, or offer the wafer to the Chalice Bearer, who will dip it in the wine for you. Communion Anthem Asperges me Claudio Casciolini (c c. 1759) Asperges me, Domine, hyssopo et mundabor: lavabis me et super nivem dealbabor. Miserere mei, Deus, secundum magnam misericordiam tuam. Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in saecula saeculorum. Amen. Sending Forth of Lay Eucharistic Visitors to Memorial Sloan Kettering, New York Presbyterian, and the homebound All 10 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Janet Boe, Louise Bozorth, Helen Goodkin, Marsha Harper, and Cynthia Rockland, in the name of this congregation, we send you forth bearing these holy gifts, that those to whom you go may share with us in the communion of Christ s body and blood. We who are many are one body, because we all share one bread, one cup. Amen.

Postcommunion Prayer BCP, page 366 Celebrant Let us pray.
