Prelude Ubi caritas et amor Gerald Near (b. 1942) Choral Introit I sat down Edward C. Bairstow ( ) I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste. He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love. 2 Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. All Almighty and everlasting God, you govern all things both in heaven and on earth: Mercifully hear the supplications of your people, and in our time grant us your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. All are seated. Dismissal to Sunday School Children ages 3 10 are invited to go to Sunday School following director Marilyn Castillo. 2

The Word of God First Reading Jeremiah 1:4 10 Sarah Krell The word of the LORD came to me saying, Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations. Then I said, Ah, Lord GOD! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy. But the LORD said to me, Do not say, I am only a boy ; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you, Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the LORD. Then the LORD put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the LORD said to me, Now I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Psalm 71:1 6 In te, Domine, speravi Mark Sedio (b. 1954) The people repeat the refrain after the choir and then sing the refrain where indicated. In you, O LORD, have I taken refuge; let me never be put to shame. In your righteousness, deliver me and set me free; incline your ear to me and save me. Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe; you are my crag and my stronghold. REFRAIN Deliver me, my God, from the hand of the wicked, from of the clutches of the evildoer and the oppressor. For you are my hope, O Lord GOD, my confidence since I was young. I have been sustained by you ever since I was born; from my mother s womb you have been my strength; my praise shall be always of you. REFRAIN 3

Second Reading 1 Corinthians 13:1 13 Louise Bozorth If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. All who are able, please stand and join in singing: Sequence Hymn 440 Blessed Jesus, at thy word Liebster Jesu The choir sings the first stanza alone; all sing the remaining stanzas. Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Gospel Luke 4:21 30 Deacon Horace Whyte In the synagogue at Nazareth, Jesus read from the book of the prophet Isaiah, and began to say, Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, Is not this Joseph s son? He said to them, Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, Doctor, cure yourself! And you will say, Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum. And he said, Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet s hometown. But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon. There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian. When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. 4

Alleluia Sung twice Holy Feast Larry J. Long (b. 1954) Sermon Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Reverend Dr. J. Barrington Bates 5

Prayers of the People Form III BCP, page 387 Stacey Gutman Leader Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; People That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. Give to the departed eternal rest; Let light perpetual shine upon them. We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others. Silence The People may add their own petitions. All Almighty and eternal God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth: Mercifully accept the prayers of your people, and strengthen us to do your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Confession and Forgiveness Deacon Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence may be kept. All Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Celebrant Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Peace Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you. The ministers and people may greet one another in the name of the Lord, then all are seated. 6

The Holy Communion Offertory Anthem Let us love in deed and truth Larry King ( ) If anyone has the world s goods, and sees his neighbor in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God s love abide in him? Let us not love in word or speech, but in deed and in truth. By this we shall know that we are of the truth: we have confidence before our God, and we receive from him whatever we ask, because we keep his commandments, and do what pleases him. And this is his commandment, that we should believe in his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another. based on 1 John 3:17 23 Please stand and join in singing: Presentation Hymn 124 What star is this with beams so bright stanza 5 Puer nobis Great Thanksgiving Enriching Our Worship Eucharistic Prayer 3 Celebrant All thanks and praise are yours at all times and in all places, our true and loving God; through Jesus Christ, your eternal Word, the Wisdom from on high by whom you created all things. You laid the foundations of the world and enclosed the sea when it burst out from the womb; you brought forth all creatures of the earth and gave breath to humankind. 7

Wondrous are you, Holy One of Blessing, all you create is a sign of hope for our journey; and so as the morning stars sing your praises we join the heavenly beings and all creation as we shout for joy: Sanctus LEVAS 255 A Mass for a Soulful People Grayson Warren Brown (b. 1948) The people may remain standing or kneel. Celebrant Glory and honor are yours, Creator of all, your Word has never been silent; you call a people to yourself, as a light to the nations, you delivered them from bondage and led them to a land of promise. Of your grace, you gave Jesus to be human, to share our life, to proclaim the coming of your holy reign and give himself for us, a fragrant offering. Through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, you have freed us from sin, brought us into your life, reconciled us to you, and restored us to the glory you intend for us. We thank you that on the night before he died for us Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, gave to his friends and said: Take, eat, this is my Body, broken for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper Jesus took the cup of wine, said the blessing, gave it to his friends and said: Drink this, all of you: this cup is the new Covenant in my Blood, poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. 8

And so, remembering all that was done for us: the cross, the tomb, the resurrection and ascension, longing for Christ s coming in glory, and presenting to you these gifts your earth has formed and human hands have made, we acclaim you, O Christ: All Dying, you destroyed our death. Rising, you restored our life. Christ Jesus, come in glory! Celebrant Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts of bread and wine that they may be to us the Body and Blood of your Christ. Grant that we, burning with your Spirit s power, may be a people of hope, justice, and love. Giver of Life, draw us together in the Body of Christ, and in the fullness of time gather us with all your people into the joy of our true eternal home. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, we worship you our God and Creator in voices of unending praise. All Blessed are you now and for ever. Amen. Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say: All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread Lamb of God Holy Feast Larry J. Long The Celebrant breaks the bread, and a period of silence is kept, then all sing: Invitation to Communion Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. 9

At the Communion All baptized persons are welcome to receive communion. Children are welcome, and parents should indicate whether a small child receives. Please receive the wafer of bread in your open and outstretched hands. Take hold of the chalice firmly and guide it to your lips. If you prefer to receive by intinction, please dip the wafer in the wine, or offer the wafer to the Chalice Bearer, who will dip it in the wine for you. Communion Anthem Ubi caritas Maurice Duruflé ( ) Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor. Exsultemus et in ipso jucundemur. Timeamus et ameamus Deum vivum. Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero. Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. Amen Sending Forth of Lay Eucharistic Visitors to Memorial Sloan Kettering, New York Presbyterian, and the homebound All Janet Boe, Louise Bozorth, Helen Goodkin, Marsha Harper, and Cynthia Rockland, in the name of this congregation, we send you forth bearing these holy gifts, that those to whom you go may share with us in the communion of Christ s body and blood. We who are many are one body, because we all share one bread, one cup. Amen. Postcommunion Prayer BCP, page 366 Celebrant Let us pray. All God of abundance, you have fed us with the bread of life and cup of salvation; you have united us with Christ and one another; and you have made us one with all your people in heaven and on earth. Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit, that we may proclaim your redeeming love to the world and continue for ever in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen. Blessing The people are seated. Announcements Where love and charity are found, God is also there. The love of Christ has gathered us in one body. Let us rejoice and be happy in him. Let us fear and love the living God, and with a sincere heart, let us love one another. Where love and charity are found, God is also there. Amen Please stand and join in singing: Hymn 530 Spread, O spread, thou mighty word Gott sei Dank 10
