2 REFLECTION REV. ANTONY JOSEPH, ASSOCIATE PASTOR The Power of the Resurrection Do you know the power and true joy of the resurrection? The Risen Lord Jesus revealed the glory of his resurrection to his disciples gradually and over a period of 40 days. Even after the Apostles saw the empty tomb and heard the reports of Jesus appearance to the women, they were still weak in faith and fearful of being arrested by the Jewish authorities. The crucifixion and death of their Master was a severe blow to the disciples. From the signs and miracles which Jesus performed, they came to believe that Jesus was truly the promised Messiah, who would restore the House of Israel by defeating their enemies and establishing a Rev. Antony A. Joseph new kingdom of Israel a kingdom of peace, joy and prosperity. This is what they hoped for. Now their hopes and dreams were shattered. Everything they believed in had come to an end. What was next? They had no idea. The Risen Lord, therefore, had to strengthen their faith in him by showing them sufficient proofs of his resurrection that He is still alive. He showed them the wounds of his passion, his pierced hands and side. He calmed their fears and brought them peace, the peace which reconciles sinners and makes us friends of God. Jesus did something more, which only love and trust can do. He commissioned his weak and timid Apostles to bring the good news of the Gospel to the ends of the earth. This sending out of the disciples is parallel to the sending out of Jesus by his heavenly Father. Jesus fulfilled his mission through his perfect love and obedience to the will of his Father. Just as Jesus called his first disciples to continue his mission, Jesus now calls each one of us to do the same. Just as Jesus gave his first disciples the gift of the Holy Spirit, so He breathes on each one of us the same Holy Spirit, who equips us with new life, power, joy and courage to live each day as followers of the Risen Lord. The last Apostle to meet the risen Lord was the first to go with him to Jerusalem at Passover time. The Apostle Thomas was a natural pessimist. When Jesus proposed that they visit Lazarus after receiving news of his illness, Thomas said to his colleagues: Let us also go, that we may die with him (John 11:16). While Thomas deeply loved the Lord, he lacked the courage to stand with Jesus in his passion and crucifixion. After Jesus death, Thomas made the mistake of withdrawing from the other disciples. He sought loneliness rather than fellowship in his time of trial and adversity. He doubted the women who saw the risen Lord, and he doubted his own fellow Apostles. When Thomas finally had the courage to rejoin the other Apostles, the Lord Jesus made his presence known to him and assured him that He had indeed overcome death and risen again. When Thomas recognized his Master, he believed and exclaimed that Jesus is truly our Lord and our God. Through the gift of faith, we too proclaim that Jesus is our Lord and our God. He died and rose that we too might have new life in him. The Lord offers each and every one of us new life in his Holy Spirit that we may know him personally and walk in this new way of life through the power of his resurrection. Do you believe in the good news of the Gospel and in the power of the Holy Spirit to bring you new life, hope, and joy? Today we also celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday, in which Catholics are encouraged to offer forgiveness and reconciliation to all. It is based on visions recorded from St. Faustian Kowalska, a Polish nun who lived in the twentieth century. In 2000, Divine Mercy Sunday was decreed as a solemnity, a high feast day, by St. Pope John Paul II, and Catholics are required to attend Mass, go to confession, and take Holy Communion. Divine Mercy Sunday occurs the Sunday after Easter.

5 Sunday of Divine Mercy Saint Mary Parish Evanston, Illinois 5 RESPECT LIFE Authentic Mercy Is Reciprocal Today, Divine Mercy Sunday, is a fit moment to reflect on St. John Paul s encyclical which teaches that merciful love is never a unilateral act. Dives in Misericordia (Rich in Mercy), 14. One who gives with such love is, he says, always also a beneficiary. This isn t easy to grasp or accept but it s worth trying to. Consider first the assurance that what we do to others out of love we do to Christ himself. Cf. Mt. 25:34-40 Mother Teresa said this many times. This means that the mercy we show to another in love is, as a spiritual reality, shown also to Christ. Like forgivers, the forgiven too bear a likeness to the divine. Gen 1:26 It is the dignity this likeness brings to each of us that both enlivens a spirit of forgiveness within us and at the same time attracts and makes us worthy and desirous of forgiveness. Then consider the fifth beatitude blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. Mt. 5:7 This is a promise that mercy, when extended not merely as a matter of justice but generously as an act of love, will be reciprocated. Read together, the two passages teach that when we, who have been made for love, forgive another with love, reverencing the reflection of God in the other, we can be confident of the other s forgiveness of us. Even if the one forgiven fails consciously to accept our act of kindness, the presence of the divine within him will. In this way, genuine acts of mercy are unfailingly communal. They profit both. They generate unity. John Paul sees the Cross as a model for this understanding. When we shape our own actions toward others with the attitude of Christ, the consummate true man, toward us on Calvary, we too, like Christ, are able to show mercy to others, knowing that Christ accepts it as if it were shown to Himself. Practicing mercy this way will require a big change for most of us. We ll need to continually purify our intentions which now understand forgiveness only as a one way action from forgiver to forgiven. John Paul sharpens the point: [L]ove, and only love including that love that is called mercy is capable of restoring human persons to themselves with the dignity that is proper to them, uniting the giver and the receiver in a more profound way. (translated into everyday English by Joseph G. Donders) Let s try merciful love a time or two today and see what happens. Practiced as a lifestyle, mercy of this kind can produce what Blessed Pope Paul VI calls a civilization of love.
