We have travelled through this Advent season, seeking the Light, waiting for the One who is to come, and growing in the recognition that the Kingdom of God is already among us. As we seek the peace that the Messiah promises to His people, we are called to bring that same peace to all we encounter, be it family, friend, co-worker, neighbor, or stranger. A parishioner recently shared the below greeting, which was penned by her former student Anna in We are called to express this same peace to new peoples in new times. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION. Every Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. or as announced in the bulletin. INFANT BAPTISMS. Registration in the parish is a prerequisite. Parents are required to attend a Pre-Baptismal Preparation Session at least two months prior to scheduling a Baptism. These sessions are held on the second Monday of every other month; the next sessions are January 8 and March 12. Baptisms are generally celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 12:30 p.m. based on the liturgical calendar. Please call the Parish Office to register for the session. REGISTRATION. 5 Fourth Sunday of Advent Saint Mary Parish Evanston, Illinois 5 BELLA ITALIA Join Deacon Dennis Robak for a spectacular twelve day journey through Italy, April 5-16, Enjoy the sights of Venice, the Pearl of the Adriatic. We ll visit the Basilica of St. Mark, Doge s Palace with its splendid rooms decorated by 16th century artists, as well as the Bridge of Sighs. Relax as we take the scenic drive through the Tuscan countryside arriving in Michelangelo s Florence, Italy s Renaissance Jewel. Stop to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa along the way. While in Florence, stroll the Piazza del Duomo and visit the Church of Santa Maria delle Fiore and many more city sights. Continuing onward, we stop in Lucca and Siena as we make our way to Rome, the Eternal City. A must, we ll visit Vatican City, St. Peters Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museum. Enjoy the ancient sights the city has to offer! Next, we make our way southward, to the enchanting town of Sorrento, visiting Assisi and Pompeii along the way. 6 6 Saint Mary Parish Evanston, Illinois December 24, 2017 RESPECT LIFE A Different World In his book of meditations for Advent and Christmastide, In Conversation with God, Fr. Francis Fernandez imagines this snapshot of Israel in the days before the birth of Christ: The Savior is about to arrive and nobody notices anything. The world goes on as usual, completely oblivious. Only Mary knows and Joseph who has been told by an angel. The world is in darkness. Christ is still in Mary s womb. And there are the Jews, still arguing about the messiah, without any idea that he is so near.... Few people are expecting the Consolation of Israel. In many ways our world remains oblivious to the divine and dwells in spiritual darkness. It continues to go about as usual. It argues about messiahs, but not a transcendent one. Its messiahs are scientific discoveries and philosophical constructs it fancies will give man dominion over life. A deeply secular selfcenteredness colors the culture. The loudest voices are Disneyized, bereft of the eternal, fleetingly alluring and ultimately unsatisfying. Today, the Vigil of the Nativity, offers hope of a different world. One illumed by the truth of the Incarnation, the greatest of secrets revealed only in the fullness of time (Rom 16:25) one which teaches that enduring satisfaction can come only from a love which consists of choosing the good of others; one which understands that dominion belongs to God, not man, and that without humility before God we will not reverence and protect life. Foreseeing this different world, Zechariah, John the Baptist s father, exclaimed: Through the tender mercy of our God, the day shall dawn upon us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. (Luke 1:78-79) Fr. Fernandez hastens to add: Jesus is the Dawn who gives light to our existence. If we want everything we do to have any meaning, it must be done in reference to Him. As we remember the Nativity, pray with Mary that all the world will center itself around Jesus.
