1 Saint Mary Parish Pentecost Sunday Established 1865 May 15, 2016 Saint Mary Parish Lake Street, Evanston Illinois stmaryevanston.org
2 LIVING OUR FAITH Dear Easter People, The Spirit of the Lord is upon us! The Feast of Pentecost celebrates images of the Holy Spirit: sometimes a tongue of fire as in the Pentecost story, more often a hovering dove. But there is another way to imagine this gift of the risen Jesus: the word spirit itself. In Greek, the language of the New Testament, the word for spirit is identical to the word for wind or breath. Wind, breath, spirit all the same! Even deeper, it is God s own breath of life. And do we let the Spirit of God take our breath away? The Feast of Pentecost a feast celebrating the Spirit upon and with each one of us means we do not walk through life alone. The Lord Jesus is with us and the Spirit of the Lord is upon us! What does the Spirit of life wind and breath look like? What difference should this Spirit make in our life and in the lives of those we touch? The following two powerful stories are filled with a profound spirit wind breath. Like the baseball slogan proclaims Baseball fever Catch it! Catch the Spirit of the Lord and become breath and wind to all those we meet. Fr. Greg Sakowicz True Love and Happiness It was a busy morning, approximately 8:30 a.m., when an elderly gentleman in his 80s arrived to have stiches removed from his thumb. He stated that he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9 a.m. I took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would be able to see him. I saw him looking at his watch and decided, since I was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound. On examination, it was well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound. While taking care of his wound, we began to engage in conversation. I asked him if he had a doctor s appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry. The gentleman told me now, that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife. I then inquired as to her health. He told me that she had been there for a while and that she had been diagnosed with Alzheimer s disease. As we talked, and I finished dressing his wound, I asked if she would be worried if he was a bit late. He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now. I was surprised and asked him, And you still go every morning, even though she doesn t know who you are? He smiled as he patted my hand and said, She doesn t know me, but I still know who she is. I had to hold back tears as he left. I had goose bumps on my arm and thought, That is the kind of love I want in my life. True love is neither physical nor romantic. True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be and will not be. The happiest of people don t necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything that comes along their way. And speaking of blessings, I would like to share this story with all of you. The man whispered, God, speak to me. And a meadowlark sang; But the man did not hear. So the man yelled, God, speak to me! And the thunder rolled across the sky, But the man did not listen. The man looked around and said, God, let me see you! And a star shone brightly, But the man did not notice. And the man shouted, God, show me a miracle! And a life was born,
3 Pentecost Sunday Saint Mary Parish Evanston, Illinois 3 But the man did not notice. So, the man cried out in despair, Touch me, God, and let me know that you are here! Whereupon God reached down and touched the man, But the man brushed the butterfly away and walked on. Let s not miss out on a blessing Because it isn t packaged the way we expect. The Spirit of the Lord Jesus will not take you where the grace of the Lord cannot keep you. In the Spirit, Fr. Greg P.S. Congratulations to our Pope John XXIII Grammar School varsity Boys Volleyball Team! Our varsity Panthers took the championship trophy against Holy Cross in Deerfield! It was an extremely well-played match and our boys volleyball team took the coveted crown! Congratulations to Coach John Szarnych and Coach Joel Fondell for their outstanding guidance and leadership. John and Joel have coached together for many years and have done a fantastic job! Excellent job to our varsity players for a marvelous year. Great going, Team! May the White Sox and Cubs do the same! 1012 Lake Street Evanston, Illinois fax stmaryevanston.org office@stmaryevanston.org MASS SCHEDULE Saturday (vigil) 5 p.m. Sunday 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m. Monday - Saturday 8 a.m. Thursday is a Communion Service Holy Days 8 a.m. noon and 7 p.m. Pastor Rev. 5 Pentecost Sunday Saint Mary Parish Evanston, Illinois 5 Why We Do What We Do Come, Holy Spirit, Come! Dianne Fox, Director of Music & Liturgy Today we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, and the finale to our beautiful Easter Season! After 6 weeks of prayer, fasting and charitable works, I hope that your 50 days of Easter joy was a blessed celebration of our Risen Lord! And now, to carry us through the remainder of our year, we have the gift of Holy Spirit presented to us. The very first time I ever Cantored a Mass (no pressure just a Christmas morning Mass!), the Sister playing the organ (I don t even remember her name!) and I went through everything I was to do. Then she said to me, Now sit there and pray to the Holy Spirit to help you. Of course, my response was, Yes, Sister. And I did! I have never looked back on that choice! The Holy Spirit is my go-to in any given situation and I have never been let down! Last year, I printed the text of the Sequence for Pentecost (a sequence is a liturgical poem that is used for special solemnities), and I would like to offer it again to contemplate upon. The sequence beautifully captures a wide range of actions of the Spirit in our lives. My prayer for all of us is that we can be open to this magnificent Spirit who walks with us in our daily lives, and gives us the courage to bring Christ to all we meet! Holy Spirit, Lord Divine, come, from heights of heaven and shine, come with blessed radiance bright! Come, O Father of the poor, come, whose treasured gifts endure, Come, our heart's unfailing light! Of consolers, wisest, best, And our soul's most welcome guest, Sweet refreshment, sweet repose. In our labor rest most sweet, pleasant coolness in the heat, consolation in our woes. Light most blessed, shine with grace in our heart's most secret place, fill your faithful through and through. Left without your presence here, life itself would disappear, nothing thrives apart from you! Cleanse our soiled hearts of sin, arid souls refresh within, wounded lives to health restore. Bend the stubborn heart and will, melt the frozen, warm the chill, guide the wayward home once more! On the faithful who are true and profess their faith in you, in your sevenfold gift descend! Give use virtue's sure reward, give us your salvation, Lord, give us joys that never end! RESPECT LIFE Freedom to Love A concept of freedom which is detached from what Saint John Paul calls its essential link with the truth is a root cause of many of today s attacks on human dignity. That s why, in speaking of freedom, Jesus doesn t promote radical self-autonomy but instead says the truth will make you free. - Jn 8:32 If we follow His Word, He promises we will be living in the truth. Put in an exalted way, freedom is the ability God has given us to love. Love is always an intentional act, a choice, and it s always the best choice. Only in this sense should we rightly wish to proclaim ourselves pro choice. We never love when we offend the teachings, as authentically explained by the Church, of the Ten Commandments or the Sermon on the Mount and its centerpiece the Beatitudes. Today, Pentecost, let s pray for an outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Let s pray especially for the gift of understanding so that we may come to better grasp what Jesus is telling us about the truth of human dignity and God s plan for our living, protecting and promoting that dignity.
