2 LENTEN LETTER DIANNE FOX, DIRECTOR OF MUSIC AND LITURGY Why We Do What We Do What does it mean to Return? For our parish, our Lenten theme this year is, Return. Nothing more. Just Return. With this theme it gives us pause to think about what we might need to return toward or give back. If you look up the word return in the dictionary you will find a myriad of definitions, all of which can relate to a healthy relationship with God and with one another. On Ash Wednesday we heard from the Prophet Joel, Even now, says the LORD, return to me with Dianne Fox your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning; Rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the LORD, your God. (Jl 2:12-13) This is such a beautiful invitation to be with the Lord, to let go of things that hold us earthbound. (Fr. Kevin s beautiful Lenten letter printed in last week s bulletin and mailed to our parishioners speaks more in depth of this beautiful theme.) How does this theme relate to our liturgies during Lent to help us make room in our hearts? Our environment during this season is very sparse with no fancy flowers nor plants, just the candles beside the Altar along with simple lighting. For our Profession of Faith we pray together the Apostles Creed rather than the Nicene Creed. While either Creed is acceptable at all times, the Apostles Creed has a close relationship with baptism and is highly encouraged during the seasons of Lent and Easter. For our music the theme of return is repeated and the verses of our common song for Communion ( Take, O Take Me as I Am ) speak of all the generations before us in search of God. We also return to the plain chants of the Mass along with a simple sung response to our General Intercessions. Throughout the Liturgical Documents we are encouraged to know and to sing the traditional chant of the Church. Chant is a living connection with our forebears in the faith, the traditional music of the Roman rite, a sign of communion with the universal Church, a bond of unity across cultures, a means for diverse communities to participate together in song, and a summons to contemplative participation in the Liturgy. (Sing to the Lord, no. 72) We also have moments of extended silence in between our readings and following Communion. We hope that this sense of simplicity during our liturgies will allow you to make space in your heart to truly contemplate your Return and your relationship with our Lord. I d like to end with Pope Francis 2017 invitation to Fast an invitation to go beyond chocolate, video games and all the other simple choices we tend to fall back on. Pope Francis on Lent Fast from Hurting Words and say Kind words. 2. Fast from Sadness and be filled with Gratitude. 3. Fast from Anger and be filled with Patience. 4. Fast from Pessimism and be filled with Hope. 5. Fast from Worries and Trust in God. 6. Fast from Complaints and contemplate Simplicity. 7. Fast from Pressures and be Prayerful. 8. Fast from Bitterness and fill your heart with Joy. 9. Fast from Selfishness and be Compassionate to others. 10. Fast from Grudges and be Reconciled. 11. Fast from Words and be Silent so you can listen. Have a blessed Lent!

Chris LeBlanc, a priest from the Diocese of Pensacola- Tallahassee in Florida who is now in residence at our Rectory. Originally from Michigan before relocating to Florida in 1993, Fr. Chris was ordained in 2010 and served as an Associate Pastor for two parishes and as the Director of Campus Ministry for two universities before coming to Chicago last summer. He currently serves as the Chaplain at Presence Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston. Additionally, Fr. Chris serves as the Executive Board Chairman for the Catholic Campus Ministry Association, a national organization of professional campus ministers serving colleges and universities. Apart from ministry, Fr. Chris enjoys an active lifestyle, including distance running, basketball and golf. The respect life apostolate proposes that all humans have inherent dignity which must be honored and protected. Why? What s so special about this dignity? Whatever it isn t, the Church is an expert about the human person. Gaudium et Spes, the Vatican II Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World offers these insights about the mystery of that person. Man has been created in "the image of God". Gen 1:26 The Psalmist says made little less than a God. Ps 8:5 He has been appointed as master of all earthly creatures. Gen 1:26 He is capable of knowing and loving God. He has been made not a solitary but rather a social being, Gen 1:27, whose highest call is to communion with his maker. Man has interior qualities which enable him to plunge into the depths of reality whenever he enters his own heart. There he finds inscribed a law which enables him to see that he has a spiritual and immortal soul and that he can discern right from wrong. More than this, he recognizes that he has been endowed with freedom, an exceptional sign of the divine image within man, by which he can choose freely between right and wrong and direct himself toward goodness. Finally, after Adam s fall, the Son God, by becoming man, sublimely united himself in some fashion with every man and in this way raised up and restored to man his divine likeness lost by Adam s sin. Gaudium et Spes, 22 This is the stuff of humankind s dignity, a spiritual reality and fundamental good which, St. John Paul reminds us, is shared equally by all of us. Evangelium Vitae (Gospel of Life), 8 When we consider issues which implicate assaults on this dignity, it behooves us to remember who we are. Unfortunately, every day that passes without a solution is a day where DACA youth fall out of status and lose their ability to go to school, serve in the military, and work legally. ACTION: As we begin the Lenten Journey this month, we ask you to join us in prayer, fasting and action by urging your lawmakers to work together for an immediate solution for Dreamers.
