REV. KEVIN MCCRAY, PASTOR Back in the 1970s and 1980s, there were a series of television commercials for a financial company, whose slogan can still be remembered by many people.

2 REV. KEVIN MCCRAY, PASTOR Back in the 1970s and 1980s, there were a series of television commercials for a financial company, whose slogan can still be remembered by many people. The commercial settings were varied at a posh restaurant, at a busy airport, on a crowded plane, walking with Tom Watson on a golf course, and even with an elementary school classroom that is practicing their ABC s. The conversation starts with the other person mentioning what their financial broker thinks is wise for a long-term investment. The other person then says, Well, my broker, E. F. Hutton says With the uttering of those words, every movement and action in the various locations comes to a halt. Waiters stop attending to their dinner guests; baggage handlers and fellow travelers stop in mid-motion; golf enthusiasts and caddies stop walking on the green, and children stop reciting their alphabet; and everyone leans in to hear what advice will be given. The sudden silence is deafening as the speakers realize that everyone has stopped to hear the answer. Then the announcer states, When E. F. Hutton talks, people listen. Rev. Kevin McCray In this scenario, in our lives, and in the readings today, we come to recognize the power of groups, of affiliations, and how we either include or exclude other from our way of thinking or our examples of living. The disciples have come to Jesus, protesting that someone outside the Twelve has been healing in the name of Jesus. In the Old Testament someone is complaining to Moses, that two men are prophesying though they were not present when the Spirit descended on the other seventy elders. In both instances, Moses and the Disciples are being taught to recognize that there will be workers in the vineyard of the Lord who will be doing work in Jesus name, yet will not be part of the hierarchy of disciples. Jesus reminds us that God often uses the least, the dispossessed, the youngest of children, and many women to move salvation forward, to open up the people s vision----that God has come to save all of humanity. But for us who are comfortable to live in families, clans, tribes, gated communities, parochial schools, universities, sororities, fraternities, clubs, and many other socio-economic and other insulating groups---we are often quick to judge and place labels and names on ourselves and on others. We can often grow into living in an Us against Them mentality. We often live with the concept that if they are not of our group, then nothing good can come out of interacting with them, even when they are doing the Lord s work. But Jesus shocks his followers again, and tells them to not hinder those who heal and teach and preach in his name--- because they are all part of God s plan to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to the far corners of the earth. Now granted, we need to be rightly formed to share the Gospel with others, and we see this with Saul, who, after his conversion, spent three years learning the message before going out on his own. Once Paul went out on his missionary trips, we see the amazing results in how the faith was spread. Just like with E. F. Hutton, when St. Paul talked, people listened even if they didn t always understand the full picture or where the journey would lead. Paul becomes a good example of an outsider who meets Jesus and is then transformed, and then goes out to share with the entire world. We are once again at a crossroads in our Church, where the laity are being challenged and called to step up and spread the Good News in our world. The shepherds of our Church have failed to protect the smallest of their flock. The shepherds of our Church have forfeited their responsibilities by losing many members, whose faith and the faith of their families was destroyed when they listened to the advice of lawyers, accountants, and public relations spin masters, over the hurt and the cries of those who came forward with their painful stories of abuse. They failed to prevent priests from harming others and only sought to protect reputations and to protect the Church from bad press. The institutional church hid behind its façade of holiness even as the hierarchy repeatedly moved abusive priests to new locations, putting them in new surroundings where new victims and survivors would emerge often with even more damaging results. It is time for the people in the pews to make their voices heard. It is time for parishioners to stand up, to write letters to their Bishops demanding a true cleaning of the Church in each diocese. Dioceses and bishops, who have already reported the historical cases of abuse (like Chicago) and who work hard to assure that new cases are the exception rather the rule, should be commended...though they should never rest but be ever-vigilant to the cries of those who hurt. It is time for the people in the pews to make their voices heard to demand accountability of bishops and other church officials who failed to protect their flocks and who allowed others to move up the ranks of clerical responsibility all while putting on a face of sanctity and holiness. It is the time that all members of the Church stand up, and by word and deed in their own lives heal, teach, preach, love, forgive, show joy and be willing to walk the journey with others always doing these actions in the name of Jesus. By doing so, the faith will grow, the Church will heal, and we can once again rejoice in our Faith.
