Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered, and let those who hate Him flee from His presence. The great Day of Resurrection has come again. All those who love God and who love truth once again commemorate the Triumph of triumphs. It is possible to see the Easter story as the incredibly joyous story of the triumph of truth. For never has truth been so wronged as it was on that first Great Friday when the Sinless One hung upon the Cross like a common thief together with evildoers. Never have evil forces been so strong as upon that day. To those who loved Him it must have seemed that this was another tragic example of the defeat of good by evil in a world, which kills its prophets and destroys those who love it most unselfishly. As the heavy stone was rolled across the opening of the tomb, it must have seemed to them as though the heavy stone of fate had rolled upon their weary hearts, crushing all their hopes forever. And then the inexpressible joy at Easter Morning! Coming to mingle their tears with spices for anointing the beloved Body of the Lord, the women find the gaping tomb is empty! The most logical assumption that the Body had been stolen or otherwise removed is quickly proved false by the appearance of the One whose loss they had come to mourn. The greatest Happy ending ever what all good fairy stories have tried to convey throughout the ages is a reality. Christ reigns! His enemies are scattered as the sun dispels the shadows of the dark night of waiting waiting for the morn which seemed never to break and yet which has now broken with all the glory of the Eternal Kingdom made manifest! It is the day of Resurrection! Let us be radiant, O people! It is the Passover, the Passover of the Lord! From death to life, and from earth to heaven Christ Our God has passed us who sing the hymn of victory! Therefore, on behalf of family, and myself I greet each and every one of you with this glorious and blessed holiday. May the invincible Resurrection Life Of Jesus Christ energize us all as we strive together with the Holy Spirit to make manifest the Kingdom of God in the Church, and our people, and throughout the World. If you re interested in prep help, meat carving, dish washing, and everything in between you can contact our cook, Maxine, at For each of our catered events we have a lovely group of Table Setters that comes in before an event to set the tables with linens and place settings. 4 PAGE 4 THE CITY IS COMING TO ST. STEPHEN S CEMETERY Accelerated activity at St. Stephen s is close at hand with City Council having approved the area structure plan for the Horsehill Neighbourhood where the cemetery is located. This plan features the development of a new community of approximately 75,000 people with the accompanying businesses and services. Once development begins we can look forward to a completely revamped road system and the installation of water and sewage services. We look forward to these exciting developments and the positive impact it will have on St. Stephen s Cemetery. We were invited to participate in strategic planning sessions that started in September, These planning sessions were facilitated by consultants from Stantec Consulting. Participants included landowners from the neighbourhood, developers who have assembled tracts of land for future development, and the planning department of the City of Edmonton. Two public hearings were held at City Hall with a multitude of presentations made, both in favour of, and against any development. At the conclusion of the second public hearing held in February, 2013, City Council voted to approve the area structure plan. This area structure plan anticipates housing for approximately 75,000 people, and services such as schools, businesses, golf courses, historic trails, museums, Light Rapid Transit, and space for intensive vegetable garden farming. This would make the area very interesting, and a very desirable place to live. The land immediately to the south of the cemetery is designated for lowdensity housing and the land directly to the west is planned for commercial properties. Just two kilometres to the south would be a major town centre that would be comprised of all types of housing, commercial properties, businesses, services, etc. Currently, neighbourhood area structure plans are being developed which should be brought to City Council for approval in the fall of The Horehill Neighbourhood that covers 9,000 acres of land has been broken into five areas. The first area to be developed borders the western edge of St. Stephen s Cemetery and stretches to the south including the intersection of Fort Road and Meridian Street where a town centre is going to be developed. An official with one of the developers revealed that they are hoping to have roofs on houses by as early as the fall of 2015, but no later than It is very exciting to contemplate that St. Stephen s Cemetery will be part of a very vibrant and unique community in the not too distant future. As well, when the new bridge across the North Saskatchewan River is completed in 2016 to the south of the Cemetery, there will be easy access to the cemetery from all quadrants of the City. ABOUT ST. STEPHEN S CEMETERY St. Stephen s Cemetery is owned by the Council of Ukrainian Orthodox Churches of Edmonton (CUOCE), an organization registered under the Societies Act of the province of Alberta. The member organizations of the Council are the five Ukrainian Orthodox parishes in Edmonton, St. John s Fraternal Society (that loaned nearly all the funds to purchase the land in 1998) and St. John s Institute. Each organization appoints two representatives to the Council from which the board of directors is elected. In addition, the Bishop of the Western Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada, the current parish priests, and any other priests in good standing living in the Edmonton area are ex officio members. Although the cemetery is owned and operated by the Ukrainian Orthodox community, it is a public cemetery serving the needs of all faiths. By George Zaharia

12 PAGE 12 Roof Drain Pipe. During repair of roof drains a major problem was discovered on a drain pipe inlet located over the upstairs TYC room. Ceiling leaks during spring thaw and rainy periods occurred over many years.from this drain most noticeable leak was in the TYC room itself,kitchen, auditorium (north wall) and down to Sadochok room. Repairs have been made on this drain. Total of roof top drains repairs-10.the original quotation of $17,718 will be exceeded by the extra repairs required. Please, consider making donation to this much needed and unexpected project. Marshall Kachmar. MEMBERSHIP PLEDGES Member Pledge Member Pledge Western Eparchy UOCC Consistory St. John Year Single Family Levy Levy Parish 2014 $200 $400 $15 $85 $ $200 $400 $15 $89 $96 Membership pledges will remain at $200 for a single member. Family membership will remain at $400 until The parish pays a levy to the Western Eparchy and UOCC Consistory for each member. As of 2014 the parish pays $100 per individual as a levy. This means that out of an individual membership pledge of $200 the parish receives $100 with the other $100 paid as a levy. That can be doubled when it comes to the family membership of $400.
