4 President s Message Submitted by Shirley Wozimirsky Easter(Velykden), the most glorious and radiant event in all history, commemorates the Resurrection of Christ. Preparations for Easter began six weeks earlier with the observance of the Great Lent. This was a time of spiritual purification, of fasting, abstinence from pleasure of the flesh, a time of penance and forgiveness. During this time the faithful go to confession to partake of Holy Communion, in expectations of the Resurrection of Christ. We are just a few days away from celebrating Easter. The parish board wishes to extend Easter greetings to His Grace Bishop Ilarion, Rev. Father Nicholas, Dobrojika Jeannette, parish members and their families, and all orthodox brothers and sisters. Khrystos Voskres (Christ is risen)! Voistyno Voskres (Truly He is risen)! Get Well Wishes are extended to Martin Husieff, Ivan Tkaczuk, Alex Palamarek, Pat Truchan and any other parish members who are ill. May God grant them the strength to recover from their illness as soon as possible. Membership Fees are due. Those individuals who have not paid their membership fees for 2016, please do this as soon as possible. Family Picnic Sunday, June 12 at about 11:45 a.m. It is potluck. Whatever you bring will be shared by the other members. Bingos Please help us when you are called. The funds generated pay our utility bills (gas, water, sewage, and power). When we do NOT have enough volunteers to man the bingos, we are penalized by loosing one or two bingos. Casino August 2 & 3, 2016 at Baccarat Casino. Please fill an application form and help us. We need 40 workers for the two days. The funds generated are needed for the operation of the church. Faith makes all things possible. Love makes all things easy. Hope makes all things work.

5 Traditional Ukrainian Easter Breakfast Traditional Foods for Blessing of the Easter Baskets Hard boiled eggs is a symbol of life and rebirth. It is also symbolic of the resurrection of Christ. The boiled egg is the first food divided and share by the family with the greeting Khrystos Voskres and the reply is Voistyno Voskres. This ritual symbolized family unity. Salt a symbol of God s grace. As salt flavors our food, so does the grace of God in our lives. If we are to be the salt of the earth, as Jesus tells us to be, we must never be without God s grace. Paska a round shaped bread decorated with fancy ornaments. The predominant dough ornaments were in the shape of the cross. Paska was symbolic of the true and eternal life offered by Christ. Jesus is the Living Bread and the word paska means Passover. Christ, by his resurrection, has passed over from death to life, freeing us from the bondage of sin. Babka a delicate, rich, raised yeast bread cake. Babka was a symbol of the Mother of God. Babka is baked as a tall, round loaf and is fine-textured, can be lightly glazed and decorated to symbolize the joy of Mary at the news of Christ s Resurrection. Ham Kobassa (ham sausage)- Ukrainian sausage contains choice cuts of lean pork and sometimes veal is also used. All meat products represent the animals used in sacrifice in the Old Testament and remind us of the sacrifice of our Savior Jesus Christ who became for us the a lamb of God taking away the sins of the World. Maslo (butter) decorated with whole cloves arranged in the shape of the cross. Butter represents the burial ointment and the cloves represent the spices and aloes which were used to anoint Christ s body to prepare it for burial. Cottage Cheese by its whiteness, is a symbol of purity and goodness of a soul without sin. Khrin horseradish root. Horseradish represents suffering. Its sharp flavour symbolizes the suffering of Christ and our own suffering as long as we are slaves to sin. Buracky z khrinom pickled beet and horseradish relish. Beets are a symbol of sin. The red stain of the beets symbolized the stain caused by sin, which is washed away by Christ s victory over sin. Krashanky solid coloured boiled eggs. Krashanka is derived from the word krasha which means to colour. The krashanka is shared by all members of the family to break the fast and to show family unity and hope for a good life in the year ahead. Pysanky intricately designed Easter eggs, made from raw eggs and never eaten. Pysanky are symbolic of the Resurrection and the promise of a better world and life eternal. These multicoloured eggs had symbolic designs to symbolize Christ risen from the tomb, just as an egg has new life coming forth from within itself. The shell represents Christ s grave.

6 Candle a lighted candle placed in the center of the paska is symbolic of the radiance of the resurrected Christ, The Light of the World. The Easter dinner would include all of the above Blessed Foods, plus a selection of the following: holubtsi, vegetables, salads, studenetz (headcheese) jelled pork meat, pork roast, parakladanetz ( a rich fruit layered coffee cake), torte ( a fancy layer cake with a variety of filling). Traditionally, the foods for Easter breakfast were served cold. Easter to Ukrainians is truly the fulfillment of the hopes and faith of mankind. The preservation of time-honoured traditions and rituals ensure that it shall be so for ages to come.

May we all rejoice in the Resurrection of Christ and with it the mystery of our salvation. To all our parish faithful, a very special Easter greeting. May the miracle of this Easter season bless you with good health, happiness and prosperity. St. Michael s hosted a Passia (Lenten) service on April 10, a well-attended event. Special thanks to Jim Kniazky and his assistants for preparing a lovely lunch for the guests. Memorial Saturday occurred on April 16. Thank you to all who attended and shared their blessed food with everyone during fellowship. May the resposed loved ones memory be eternal. The Blessed Easter Luncheon scheduled for May 8 has been cancelled. Mother s Day is also on May 8, therefore there is no coordinator for the luncheon, as most of the women are involved with their families. Mother s Day is a special day to celebrate motherhood. May you have a wonderful day celebrating with family members, honoring the mothers and grandmothers in our lives. Mother s Day May 8 On the lighter side: There was a minister who fell in the ocean and he couldn t swim. When a boat came by, the captain yelled Do you need help? The minister replied No, God will save me. A little later, another boat came by and a fisherman asked Hey, do you need help? the minister replied again No, God will save me. Eventually the minister drowned and went to Heaven. He asked God Why didn t you save me? God replied, Fool, I sent you two boats! Mary Paltzat UWAC President

Enjoy your time with family and friends while you sit down to eat paska, babka, kubasa, eggs, horseradish & cheese. For those who are travelling, we wish you a safe & enjoyable journey. Happy Mother s Day greetings are being extended to all the mothers, grandmothers, and great grandmothers of our parish. Enjoy your day & may God Bless you with good health and happiness. As we look forward to May flowers, the church grounds have been groomed. I would like to thank the volunteers who have looked after the purchasing of new equipment and maintenance of the church. Again, a huge hand to those wonderful people who have worked the Bingos, your commitment is unmeasurable and your continued support would be greatly appreciated. As June will soon be here, we wish our many fathers, grandfathers and great grandfathers a Happy Father s Day. May your day be special and may you be blessed with good health and happiness. Our next casino has been scheduled on Tuesday, August 2 nd and Wednesday, August 3rd, 2016 at the Baccarat Casino located at Avenue. This two day event results in a large monetary reward. We have 40 positions to fill and would appreciate your assistance. Please call me at to make arrangements to complete a volunteer application form. Family and friends are welcome to volunteer as well.
