1 1 April 2018 St. Andrew s Outreach Newsletter St. Andrew s Ukrainian Orthodox Sobor Parish Street Edmonton, AB. T6A 2Y8 Rev. Fr. Yuriy Church Office st.andrews-uocc@telus.net Palm Sunday April 1, 2018 The Icon of the Feast of Palm Sunday, Christ is the central figure, seated upon a donkey as He enters Jerusalem. Christ is blessing with His right hand, and in His left hand is a scroll, symbolizing that He is the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah, the Anointed One who has come to redeem us from our sins and break the power of death. The donkey, one of the animals that were considered unclean according to the Law, is symbolic of the inclusion of all peoples of all nations in the new covenant that will come through the death and Resurrection of Christ (Isaiah 62:10-11). It is also a sign that our Lord has revealed a heavenly and spiritual kingdom that offers true and enduring peace. On the right, the disciples accompany Jesus in His Triumphal Entry. Depicted on the left are the Jews who greet Him crying Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel! The word Hosanna means Save, I pray or Save now. The children are the small people who are greeting Christ with palm branches and laying these and their garments on the ground before Christ as tokens of honor for one who is acknowledged as a King. The city of Jerusalem is shown as the walled buildings, and the temple is depicted as the building with the dome. Holy Thursday April 5, Divine Liturgy 9:30 am Passion Service 5:00 pm John 13:1-17 (At the Washing of the Feet, Gospel) 1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. 2 And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray Him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, 4 rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. 5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. 6 Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, "Lord, are You washing my feet?" 7 Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this." 8 Peter said to Him, "You shall never wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me." 9 Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!" 10 Jesus said to him, "He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you." 11 For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, "You are not all clean." 12 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? 13 You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. 16 Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

The priest removes the Body of Christ, (the Plashchanytsia), and carries it into the altar. In an evening service, at the Tomb, the priest carries the Plashchanytsia, the painted or embroidered cloth representation of Christ, from the altar around the church before placing it in the Sepulcher, a bier symbolizing the Tomb of Christ. This procession, with the faithful carrying lighted candles, represents Christ's descent into Hades. Great and Holy Saturday Vespers and a Divine Liturgy of St. Basil are served, marked with readings of Psalms and Resurrection hymns that tell of Christ's descent into Hades, celebrated as the "First Resurrection" of Adam and the conquering of Death. It is appointed by the typikon to be celebrated in the afternoon, though it is served in the morning in many places. This service comes from the ancient liturgical tradition of the Church of Constantinople and was its primary Paschal service. The hymn "Arise O God" from the Psalms was the original primary Paschal hymn before "Christ is risen" came to take its place. Its place as the ancient Constantinopolitan Paschal celebration is what gives the service such a bright and resurrectional character. 6 Renovations Some of you may have noticed this big dumpster behind our manse. Renovations have been taking place on the main floor for the past two weeks. Many long hours have been expended in the house to make necessary improvements. We have a young family as our new tenants and we ask that you respect their privacy. Just because the parish owns the manse, does not give parish members freedom to ask the tenant to allow an inspection' of the changes that were made. The Board of Management will be doing a PowerPoint presentation to show the upgrades that have occurred. Please be patient; a date for the presentation will be announced. Thank you. 6 Board of Management ST. ANDREW S GOLDEN AGE CLUB We welcome new members (over 55) to join us every Tuesday at 9:30 A.M. for fellowship and games. 9 9 Passia at St. Andrew s Our Parish hosted the last Passia or Divine Suffering of Christ of this Lenten season on Sunday, March 25 at 6:00 p.m. The service was concelebrated by His Grace Bishop Ilarion, our Edmonton Ukrainian Orthodox clergy and Deacon Gary Boychuk. For parishioners who were unable to be present but have internet access, the Passia text is at the following website: The readings were from John * Following the service, faithful who attended from each of our five Parishes assembled in the Tillie Kurysh Hall to hear an inspiring lecture presented by Rev. Fr. Roman I. Shiyan. His topic was: "Passions of the world and the Passions of Christ" which he summarizes as follows. The presenter explored and juxtaposed different semantic meanings of the word "passion" as temptations and emotions imposed upon us by this world, its ways, and values, and as "suffering" - the suffering and sacrifice of Our Lord God and Saviour Jesus Christ for us, sinners. The main question, raised in this presentation, was: Which "passions" do we, Orthodox Christians, embrace? Which passions guide our life? It is unthinkable for us to forget about the Passions, endured by Our Lord for our sake. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16). I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live (John 11: 25). These words give our life meaning and serve as the beacon of our hope and trust in God's promise. It is for us to understand and to remember that we cannot go forward on the path of righteousness embracing Our Lord and His Passions and the sinful passions of this world, because they contradict, oppose each other just as life, love, and faith oppose destructive, divisive, devil-inspired passions and death. Our Lord s Passions is the price paid by the One without blemish for us, sinners. The questions are, and always remain the same: Are we worthy of Our Lord s Passions, endured for our sake? How can we become worthy of His Passions? Answering these questions is of vital importance to us, to our Salvation. Following Rev. Fr. Roman Shiyan s presentation, a delicious Lenten buffet was served. Worshipers from the various Parishes enjoyed visiting with one another during the meal. As usual, donations collected were made to the Western Eparchy for its Mission Fund. *Copies of The Orthodox Study Bible are available in our kiosk. It has excellent explanatory notes on every page.

13 13 Ukrainian Language Classes for Adults Ukrainian Language Classes for Adults sponsored by our Ladies Auxiliary concluded on March 14 for the term. Lesia Perritt, coordinator, dedicated the short yearend program to its two founders of Blessed Memory, Dobrodiyka Nadia Kryschuk and Halyna Koszarycz. In the fall of 1989, these dedicated ladies initiated Ukrainian Languages Classes for Adults at St. Andrew s. They both taught classes in the early years with Dobrodiyka Nadia coordinating the language program until her untimely repose in August We are grateful for their foresight and commitment in maintaining the Ukrainian language. This year, 69 students participated in the September to March, Wednesday evening classes taught by six teachers. All students gathered together on March 14 for the last half of their class time to share one aspect of their language learning through the term. The program began with the singing of the Ukrainian National Anthem. Class presentations included a brief biography of Taras Shevchenko and a reading of one of his poems; a poem written by Maxim Rul skiy; traditional poetic wishes made on Palm/Willow Sunday; Mother s Day verses; students reading personal biographies; and the singing with movement of a popular Ukrainian song. Vocabulary from the contents of a Ukrainian traditional Easter basket were reviewed and all classes participated in singing of two traditional songs. Ludvik Marianych, teacher, provided musical accompaniment whenever required and also served on the administrative committee. A special thank you is extended to two volunteers who assist in making Ukrainian Language Classes for Adults in our parish available to the general public. Marion Ostapchuk, committee member, handles all registrations and keeps accurate records of contact information. She shops for and provides snack during class breaks, among other duties. Gordon Ostapchuk is present to set up chairs, move furniture and provide whatever physical assistance may be necessary. Both Marion and Gordon man a display advertising the classes, at events at the Ukrainian Heritage Village and at the Pysanka Festival in Vegreville. Thank you for your time and dedication! Classes will again be offered beginning September Registration forms will soon be available. Pre-registrations are being accepted by phoning the Parish office at ~ Lesia Perritt, Volunteer Coordinator
