3 President s Message Submitted by Shirley Wozimirsky Welcome back from the summer recess! I hope that all parish members had a good summer and plenty of rest because now it is time to get to work. Please mark these church events on your calendar: Bishop s Tea on Sunday September 16, 12:30 p.m. Milestone Celebration on Sunday, September 23 during fellowship Those who are celebrating their 75, 80, 90, and 95 th birthdays and couples celebrating their 50 th and 55 th anniversaries should have received their invitations. A response as to your attendance at this event would be greatly appreciated. Get Well Wishes are extended to Ruby Holowaychuk, Joyce Wilk, Eva Scobie, Lucy Skrypnyk, and Elizabeth Stefaniuk We will keep you in our prayers until you recover from your surgeries or illness. Western Eparchy Assembly will be held October 25 28, 2012 at St. John s Cathedral. Two delegates plus Rt. Rev. Mitred Archpriest Fr. Nicholas Rauliuk will be attending this assembly. On October 28, the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy will be held at St. John s Cathedral. Every member from our parish is invited to attend this Hierarchical Divine Liturgy.

4 Parish Board Meetings are scheduled for September 18, 2012 and October 16, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at the church. Board members please attend these meetings decisions need to be made. Parish General Meeting (Informational meeting) is scheduled for Sunday, October 21, 2012 following Fellowship luncheon. Fund raising is primarily done through Bingos. Please support our Bingo chairmen when you are called to help work a Bingo. Your support is greatly appreciated. Welcome new members William Shymko and Daisy Senyk have decided to join our parish. Please welcome them when they attend our Divine Liturgies or help in our activities. Church School Please encourage your children and grandchildren to attend Youth Religious Instruction on the last Sunday of the month. I know many of our parishioners learn or refresh their memories about our faith. It is only a half hour in length. Please phone or me about parish members who have become ill or are scheduled for surgery or have lost a loved one. My phone number is or at swozimir@shaw.ca. This will give me the opportunity to get in contact with you by card or visit. Please come to the Divine Liturgies as often as you can. Remember that our parish is God s Temple of worship. This where we should be sharing our problems with the Lord to help us with our healing. Do Not Live Life Sad Good Humour. Laughter. Rest. Happiness. These replenish health and bring long life. The happy person has the gift to improve the environment wherever they live. Good humour saves us from the hands of the doctor. Happiness is health and therapy. A few hints for using coffee filters: 1. Cover bowls or dishes when cooking in the microwave. Coffee filters make excellent covers. 2. Clean windows and mirrors. Coffee filters are lint-free so they ll leave windows sparkling. 3. Filter cork from wine. If you break the cork when opening the bottle, filter the wine through the coffee filter. 4. Keep in the bathroom. They make great razor nick fixers. 5. Stop the soil from leaking out of a plant pot. Line a plant pot with a coffee filter to prevent soil from going through the drainage holes. 6. Protect a cast iron skillet. Place a coffee filter in the skillet to absorb moisture and prevent rust. When praying, don t give God instructions just report for Duty!

5 GRANDPA S HANDS This is good; I ll never look at my hands the same! Grandpa, some ninety plus years, sat feebly on the patio bench. He didn t move, just sat with his head down staring at his hands. When I sat down beside him, he didn t acknowledge my presence and the longer I sat I wondered if he was OK. Finally, not really wanting to disturb him but wanting to check on him at the same time, I asked him if he was OK. He raised his head and looked at me and smiled. Yes, I m fine, thank you for asking, he said in a clear strong voice. I didn t mean to disturb you, Grandpa, but you were just sitting here staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure you were OK, I explained to him. Have you ever looked at your hands, he asked. I mean really looked at your hands? I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. I turned them over, palms up and then palms down. No, I guess I had never really looked at my hands as I tried to figure out the point he was making. Grandpa smiled and related this story: Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they have served you well throughout your years. These hands, though wrinkled, shriveled and weak have been the tools I have used all my life to reach out and grab and embrace life. They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back. As a child my Mother taught me to fold them in prayer. They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots. They have been dirty, scraped and raw, swollen and bent. They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold my newborn son. Decorated with my wedding band they showed the world that I was married and loved someone special. They trembled and shook when I buried my Parents and Spouse and walked my Daughter down the aisle. They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed and cleansed the rest of my body. They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried and raw. And to this day when much of anything else of me works real well these hands hold me up, lay me down, and again continue to fold in prayer. These hands are the mark of where I ve been and the ruggedness of my life. But more importantly it will be these hands that God will reach out and take when he leads me home. And with my hands He will lift me to His side and there I will use these hands to touch the face of Christ. I will never look at my hands the same again. But remember God reached out and took my Grandpa s hands and led him home. When my hands are hurt or sore I think of Grandpa. I know he has been stroked and caressed and held by the hands of God. I, too want to touch the face of God and feel His hands upon my face.

6 PYROHY A big thank you to the men and women who have come out on Mondays and Tuesdays to make dough, boil potatoes, make pyrohy and package them. Some Tuesdays cabbage rolls were made. The work of many hands make the job lighter. On July 19 a very successful sale was held from the kitchen door. Thank you to Mary Ann Palamarek for coordinating these workshops. I encourage the membership to continue supporting these workshops by volunteering. The comradeship is wonderful! Pyrohy/cabbage workshops will begin again very soon. If there is enough product on hand, another sale will be held before Thanksgiving. Therefore continue to mark your calendars for Tuesdays as Pyrohy Workshop. CABBAGE Before that tasty cabbage roll lands on your plate, a lot of preparation needs to take place. In August a bulk order of cabbage was delivered to the parish. These heads were cleaned, cored, blanched, deveined, packaged and frozen. Thank you to the men and women who assisted in this work bee. PYROHY & CABBAGE ROLL SALE Thursday, September 27 3:00-7:00 p.m. St. Michael s Parish Kitchen Avenue WOMEN S Bi-MONTHLY MEETING Monday, September 10, :00 p.m. CYC CONVENTION Saturday, October 6, 2012 St. John s Cultural Centre Ukrainian Women s Association of Canada союз українок канади відділ княгині ольги St. Michael s Ukrainian Women s Association September-October 2012 BISHOP S TEA Sunday, September 16, :30 3:00 p.m. St. Michael s Parish The Annual Bishop s Tea for His Eminence Archbishop Illarion, Bishop of Edmonton and Western Eparchy will be held at St. Michael s Ukrainian Orthodox Church on Sunday, September 16, The regular Sunday service will begin at 10:00 a.m. followed by tea and luncheon in the parish hall at 12:30 to 3:00 p.m. This function is a cooperative effort of the five Ukrainian Orthodox Parishes in Edmonton and The Ukrainian Women s Association is host at the luncheon. There is no charge for the luncheon. Thank you to the women who have volunteered to make sandwiches, to plate sandwiches and pastry and to set up tables. Volunteers from other parishes will assist and I ask that we all make them feel comfortable. ETERNAL MEMORY Our deepest sympathy to Mary Anne Euchak and her family on the recent passing away of her husband Andy on June 25, Sincere sympathy to Helen Repka whose son, Anthony (Tony) Rebinsky passed away on June 25, 2012 at the age of 65. May his memory be eternal. On July 8, 2012, Claudia Lukasiewich passed away at the age of 95. Claudia was a member of the UWAC for 27 years. An obituary has been submitted to Promin and should appear in the next issue. Several other UWAC members have lost members of their family and to these people I extend heartfelt wishes for their eternal memory. Submitted by Dorothy Stachniak, President

7 President s Report St. Michael s Men's Society Well, where did the summer go? Yes it is almost over. I hope all our hard-working volunteers stayed in good health and had a wonderful summer holiday. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped at our Casino, it takes a lot of workers and some late hours, but it is one of our major fund raiser events and all went very well. A special thank you to the volunteers that worked the two days to help fill the shifts-positions, as a couple of volunteers had changed their plans and could not help. I look forward to seeing the men's society members at our meeting on the 10th of September, please feel free to offer any fund raising ideas you may have or any changes you feel we need to make that will benefit our Parish fund raising ways. Thank you Henry and your bingo captains for making sure we always have enough workers at our bingo events. Kensington bingo staff are very appreciative for all the hard work you do and the great volunteers that you supply. The Men's Society wish to thank all the volunteers, men and ladies, that are always ready to help at our on-going bingos, as this is also a major fund raiser that helps pay some of our Parish expenses.
