2 WHAT IS STEWARDSHIP? Christian stewardship is a way of living in which we recognize that everything belongs to God. When we tithe, we know we are not making a gift to a building. We are giving to our church so that lives will be changed in the name of Christ. We return a portion of what God has given us, and by doing so, we fund programs and ministries that build the Kingdom of God. Stewardship can take several forms. Tithing is the most direct way to practice stewardship individually. Another way is corporate stewardship where we join together to give to the church. Three groups in our church contribute generously to the missions and activities of the church: Circle #1, Friendship Circle, and the Methodist Men. Membership in these groups provides not only great fellowship and worship, but also opportunity to participate in fund-raising activities that contribute to church programs. All members are encouraged to join one of these groups and participate in the fellowship and activities that support the mission of our church. We cannot out give God. He gives us beyond what we deserve. As we begin the new year, can we all think about what God has given us and can we return His gifts? Collected Thoughts from the Vision Committee! 3 To Our Buckhorn Church Family The Rev. David and Linda Amon Invite you to join us In a celebration of love On Sunday, the 18 th of March, 2012 At 11:00 a.m. for the renewal of our marriage vows at Buckhorn United Methodist Church The Rev. Charles Moseley Officiating It s the PITTS! What a wonderful time we had as a church family worshiping together during the Advent and Christmas season. The sounds of the season were fantastic and the worship was amazing. Thank you to all who had a part in the music ministry during this special time in the life of our church. Thank you to the Children s Choir and Belinda Hinnant as they stirred our hearts with The Little Christmas Lamb and their participation with the Adult Choir as we worshipped together during their presentation of Celebrate the King. I thank you all for the effort and heart that you put into our worship. And a special personal Thanks to both choirs and some members of the congregation for your generous Christmas gifts to me. You were all so kind Now our thoughts turn to the season of Lent and our journey to the cross with Jesus. Our Adult choir will be presenting Near the Cross, An Easter Musical Worship Experience on Palm Sunday, April 1 st at 7:00 pm. Although most of us know well the story of Christ s journey, this worship experience will not only remind us of the cross and what it means to us, but will hopefully draw us nearer to the cross where Jesus died and propel us towards the victory in Jesus that we know is ours. Plan to join us for this event and invite someone to come with you. The Music Ministry of Buckhorn United Methodist Church presents. NEAR THE CROSS An Easter Musical Worship Experience SUNDAY, APRIL 1 7:00 PM In The Sanctuary of Buckhorn United Methodist Church New Music Ministry Opportunity We are beginning a new Praise Team here at Buckhorn. This team will be made up of anyone (any age) who would like to play an instrument or sing once or twice a month in our worship services. There will be a brief organization meeting on Sunday, February 26 at 3:30 in the Sanctuary. Here is a great chance to pull out those instruments, guitars, bass guitar, drums, keyboards, etc. and join us as we Raise Our Praise. He didn t move, just sat with his head down staring at his hands. When I sat down beside him he didn t acknowledge my presence and the longer I sat I wondered if he was OK. Finally, not really wanting to disturb him but wanting to check on him at the same time, I asked him if he was OK. He raised his head and looked at me and smiled. Yes, I m fine, thank you for asking. He said in a clear strong voice. I didn t mean to disturb you, Grandpa, but you were just sitting here staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure you were OK, I explained to him. Have you ever looked at your hands, he asked. I mean really looked at your hands? I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. I turned them over, palms up and then palms down. No, I guess I had never really looked at my hands as I tried to figure out the point he was making.. Grandpa smiled and related this story. Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they have served you well throughout your years. These hands, though wrinkled shriveled and weak have been the tools I have used all my life to reach out and grab and embrace life. Grandpa s Hands Cont. next column Grandpa s hands cont. They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back As a child my mother taught me to fold them in prayer. They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots. They have been dirty, scraped and raw, swollen and bent. They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold my newborn son. Decorated with my wedding band they showed the world that I was married and loved someone special. They trembled and shook when I buried my parents and spouse and walked my daughter down the aisle. They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed and cleaned the rest of my body. They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried and raw. And to this day when not much of anything else of me works real well, These hands hold me up, lay me down, and again continue to fold in prayer. These hands are the mark of where I ve been and the ruggedness of my life. But more importantly it will be these hands that God will reach out and take when he leads me home. And with my hands He will lift me to His side and there I will use these hands to touch the face of Christ. I will never look at my hands the same again. But I remember God reached out and took my Grandpa s hands and led him home. When my hands are hurt or sore I think of Grandpa. I know he has been stroked and caressed and held by the hands of God. I, too, want to touch the face of God and feel His hands upon my face. 6
