We are centered in Jesus Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit and nourished by the Eucharist. We are a welcoming family, striving to see Christ in all and responding to the needs of the members of our parish and community. Called to act in faith, hope and love we seek to become a visible presence of Christ in the world.
2 Reflecting on God s Word Few portions of the Bible have been in the news as much in recent years as the creation accounts from Genesis. But even for those who don t believe these accounts to be factually true in a scientific way, it s important to recall that these accounts do contain many truths. An important but sometimes overlooked one is in today s first reading: God alone can banish evil. We should note that Adam and Eve don t get mad at being hoodwinked by the serpent and drive it out of the garden; God does that. In the Gospel, a very agitated Jesus calls us back to that truth. Mark says that Jesus began to speak to them in parables (3:23), but Jesus seems to forget the story portion of parable-telling and goes right to making his point. It is acknowledged that Jesus drove out demons, but irrationally that it was through the power of evil that he did so. Correctly, Jesus illustrates that his power to drive out demons must have a source other than an evil one. As in Eden, his driving out the forces of evil is an act of God alone. And so it is still today when we face the forces of evil in our own lives and in the world around us. When we work against these forces and strive to uphold what is right and good, we can only do so through the saving power of God. Alan J. Hommerding THIS WEEK IN OUR PARISH June 11 - June 17, 2018 MONDAY TUESDAY Prayer Shawl - 9am Lectio Divina - 7pm WEDNESDAY Diocesan On Fire Session 6-9am On Fire Mass - 3pm 33 Days to His Merciful Love - 6:30pm THURSDAY Weekday Mass - 12 Noon No Holy Hour Adoration & Divine Mercy - 3pm FRIDAY SATURDAY Sacrament of Penance - 5pm - 5:30pm Vigil Mass - 6pm SUNDAY Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday Masses - 8:30am, 10am and 12 Noon From the Pastor Today we celebrate the 10 th Sunday in Ordinary time. In our Gospel from St. Mark the scribes accused Jesus of being possessed by Beelzebul, having demonic power, because of the ability to cast out demons. Jesus responds by saying that a power that battles against itself is bound to collapse. Why would Satan fight against himself? They were questioning where Jesus authority came from. Jesus also said that all sins are forgivable except the sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (which is a denial of Jesus power in his exorcisms which came from the Holy Spirit), and they said Jesus could not perform such actions. We know that Jesus is Lord, and is all powerful and as God can forgive sins as well as perform miracles of awesome proportions. We are in the vacation time for schools and busy time for visitations from priests who will be coming here as well as visitations of priests going elsewhere as myself. We need to look at all schedules, daily mass, Sunday mass, confession, and more, and try to work it out so that everyone is covered, even if changes will be made. Please pray for me and the other priests who will be responsible for enacting such actions that we have courage and wisdom. God bless you. Fr. Al Z+ TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The cathedral is a treasure in a diocese and in our tradition. It is not simply a big church, as some say; some parish churches are larger. What makes a cathedral is the presence of the chair, called a cathedra (Latin for seat) reserved for the bishop. There are many instances in our country of a local church (diocese) outgrowing a cathedral. In Baltimore and St. Louis, the former cathedrals are historic treasures in the heart of the old city, but new and larger structures now function as the seat of the bishop. When a bishop dies or retires, it is said that the seat is vacant, and when the new bishop is installed, the central ritual is the moment when the decree of the Holy Father is read and the new bishop is escorted to the cathedra. No one but the bishop sits in the cathedra during a ritual, but in Los Angeles the cathedra in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is accessible, and no one seems to mind when a visitor tries the cathedra out for the bishop s point of view. 3 PROMISES Today s liturgy is full of promises. The reading from Genesis promises a final triumph over the power of sin and a return to a new creation. The reading from Second Corinthians promises that all who follow Christ will have to struggle. It also promises, however, that we can persevere if we but recognize that Christ is within us, renewing us daily, and giving us the courage and the strength we need to endure. The Gospel promises that doing God s will makes us family with Jesus, who forgives all sin and triumphs over evil. Today might be a good day for us to make some promises as well. We can promise to stop kidding ourselves about our own tendencies to selfishness and sin. We can promise ourselves to believe really believe that while we are not sinless, we are forgiven. We can promise ourselves to combat evil and sin by acting as sisters and brothers not only to the Lord, but to one another as well. It has no other character than that which we give it from generation to generation. Woodrow Wilson PARISH NEWS Church/Sacred Space Worship Space/Gathering Space For most of us, entering our parish church is like walking into our home. We know where everything is located, the pictures on the wall, the furniture, our favorite seat. Even when we go to another church, the surroundings are so similar that we are not strangers. Each of the objects, the surroundings in our Catholic churches, has a purpose and a history. Here is an overview of some of those sacred areas, objects and surroundings. The Gathering space is where we are welcomed each Sunday, where baptisms, funerals and weddings begin; here we form lines for processions and receive palms. It is a place for religious literature and for parish notices or displays. The gathering space, frequently called the narthex, is the place where the faithful greet one another before and after Mass. It is the area between the outside doors of the church and the inner doors leading into the worship space/sacred space. In the gathering space we, at least mentally, discard our secular ways, knowing that we are about to enter holy ground and that our attitude, body language and even our attire reflect the sacredness therein. The part of a Catholic Church where the laity prays and worships is called the nave/sacred space. The word nave comes from the Latin navis, meaning ship. We, the people of God, are regarded as passengers on a ship destined for heaven. The nave is not a meeting place but a place of worship; the congregation is not an audience but participants in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Please respect the Sacred space of others where parishioners come to worship/pray. Let it be a sacred space of silence and worship. The Eucharist as a Sacrifice (CCC ) Catholics believe that the Mass is a sacrificial meal. As we examine the words of institution or consecration recited at each Mass, we clearly notice their sacrificial language. They speak about a body that was broken and about blood that poured out for forgiveness of sins. For Jesus, the reality of what was to happen the nest day on Calvary was part of the meal that he was celebrating with his Apostles. They were participating in a sacrificial meal, a meal that was clearly linked and made present in the sacrifice that Jesus was to make the next day on Calvary. When the early Christians gathered to celebrate the Eucharist, they were aware that Jesus, the slain lamb of God (Rev. 5:12) and also their risen brother, was in their midst. Holy Name Society The Holy Name Society collects non-perishable food for the Plum Food Bank. Please leave your donations in the church vestibule and they will be gathered and taken to the Plum Food Bank every weekend. Thank you for your generosity! The Holy Name Society will have its final meeting for the year on Sunday June 10 in Room 2 of Father Marchukonis Hall following the 10am Mass. Any Catholic man or woman over the age of 18 is eligible to join the Holy Name Society and you re welcome to attend the meeting to see if you might be interested in becoming a member. Hope to see you there. PAGE FOUR OUR LADY OF JOY PARISH, HOLIDAY PARK, PA JUNE 10, 2018
