5 SAINT BENEDICT Abbot and Founder of the Benedictine Order (c ) Patron Saint of Civil Engineers Feast day - July 11 Benedict grew up in Nursia (Norcia) in central Italy and he studied in Rome where he was so upset by the immorality of the culture that he le and went to Subiaco to live as a hermit, where he was instructed in Chris an asce cism by St. Romanus, a Solitary of the vicinity. MINISTRIES AT THE CATHEDRAL OF THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY The Cathedral is having a "kick-off" for our new Hospitality Ministry. We are looking for individuals who would like to share their Time and Talent. If your Talent is crea vity, decora ng, baking, cooking, or serving, this ministry is for YOU. His reputa on for sanc ty gathered many disciples around him, for whom he erected monasteries in which they lived a community life under a prescribed rule. In the year 529, he le Subiaco for Monte Cassino, and there founded the great Abbey which became the center of religious life in Europe. The principles of the Rule wri en by St. Benedict became the basis of religious life for all Western religious orders and congrega ons a er his me. It shows the way to religious perfec on by the prac ce of self-conquest, mor fica on, humility, obedience, prayer, silence, re rement, and detachment from the world and its cares. A common phrase associated with Benedic ne monks is Ora et Labora, (La n for Prayer and Work ), because their day has both prayer and work components. St. Scholas ca, the sister of St. Benedict, was the first Benedic ne nun. She presided over a monastery of nuns near Monte Cassino. St. Benedict died March 21, 543, not long a er his sister, Saint Scholas ca, as he stood before the altar of Monte Cassino immediately a er receiving Holy Communion.
