5 SAINT PHILIP NERI ( ) Patron Saint of Rome Feast Day May 26th St. Philip was born in Florence in 1515, the very same year that St. Teresa was born at Avila in Spain. From his sixth year he was characterized by the most perfect obedience toward his parents. On the eve of Pentecost in 1544, St Philip Neri was praying for the gifts of the Holy Spirit with great fervor when what appeared to be a ball of fire entered his mouth and caused his heart to become visibly enlarged. He was so violently consumed with divine love that at times he found it necessary to open his garment to obtain relief from the heat emanating from his heart. A native of Florence, St. Philip had left a life of business to go to Rome, though he had no plans and no money. After living a solitary life of prayer for two years, He studied theology and philosophy, but quite suddenly he quit his studies and devoted himself to rousing the lukewarm people of Rome to the love of Jesus. To this end, he founded confraternities, popularized devotions and established a hospital. Ordained in 1552, he spent several hours a day reconciling penitents to God in the confessional. He conducted informal spiritual discussions, to which people flocked, and founded the Congregation of the Oratory (Oratorians).
