The diocese promotes vocations, educates seminarians, provides retirement for priests, and provides the marriage tribunal services. 4 MINISTRIES AT THE CATHEDRAL OF THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY Each month, we will be highlighting an area of ministry or ministries within our parish, and the people and families who volunteer in them. This month, we are featuring The Altar Servers. Altar Servers: If you have already made your First Holy Communion and would like to serve the Lord as an Altar Server and learn the special role of an altar server in helping the priest during the Mass, please contact Lisa and Eddie Padron at Ring in the New Year with Light Weigh! The Light Weigh Bible Study programs are designed to help members overcome any struggles they may have with weight issues and overeating. Each Light Weigh session features Video Presentations that highlight a Saint of the Week, a Light Weigh Eating Example, and other great Catholic/Scriptural lessons that are tied to the struggle of overeating and how to overcome it. Come see what Light Weigh is about at a no-obligation Orientation session on Thursday, December 14, 2017 in Room 115 in the Parish Center. Naumann of Kansas City, Kansas, and a former participant in a Light Weigh One King Bible Study, has this to say about it: "I do recommend the program. Light Weigh is a great resource to become better stewards of our bodies. With Light Weigh there are no "weigh-ins", but it is meant to be done as a group. By participating in weekly meetings, participants both challenge and support each other in their efforts to give God dominion over their eating choices." 5 SAINT NICHOLAS Patron Saint of Russia and Children Feast Day December 6 St. Nicholas is famous the world over. He was born in Asia Minor; his wealthy parents died when he was young, leaving him money which he dispensed through charitable works. A popular tradition tells of a desperate father of three daughters who was on the verge of giving them to a life of sin because he had no money to provide dowries for honorable marriages. Anonymously, St. Nicholas threw three bags of gold into a window of their house, and the three were able to marry. St. Nicholas became Bishop of Myra during Diocletian s persecutions and suffered with other Christians until Constantine became Emperor. Nicholas fought against both Arianism and paganism, and St. Methodius credited him with the fact that Myra was never infected by Arianism. St. Nicholas miraculously saved some sailors from drowning. The relics of St. Nicholas were brought to Bari (in southeastern Italy) in 1087, and his shrine became a great destination for pilgrims. His relics exude a clear liquid known as the manna of St. Nicholas, by the devout use of which sick persons are cured and other favors are granted. He has always been honored with great veneration in the Latin and Greek Churches. The Russian Church seems to honor him more than any other Saint after the Apostles. St Nicholas is regarded as the special patron of children, and our well-known Santa Claus is a derivative of St. Nicholas. W e a re in ne ed of M iniste rs to the Homebound.
