St. Hugh s News & Views April E Wheelwright St. S./ P. O. Box 156 Allyn, WA Phone: st.hugh.allyn@gmail.com Web Page: Building projects at St. Hugh -- a note from the Property Warden The Bishop's Committee and interested parties have been considering two possible building projects for the well-being of our church community: Narthex expansion The first is the possible expansion of the Narthex to make life easier all around. The B.C. and others are very positive about the benefits of this project, and the B.C. has decided to go ahead with obtaining plans for the expanison, which would do two things -- A. Let us go out to bid in order to get a real understanding of the cost of the project, and B. Allow us to seek approval from the Diocese to proceed. This is a longer-term project, as substantial funds will have to be raised and allocated in order for the project to proceed past the planning stage. New Storage Shed The second, near-term project is the replacement of the three old storage sheds with a single large shed that would provide more useful space and easier access, while improving overall security -- which has been an ongoing problem, with regular attempts being made to burglarize the sheds. We would very much like to build the new shed this year. It has been proposed that we have a 20 foot wide by 12 foot deep shed built on a concrete pad in the space where the three sheds are now. This would let us put one of the old sheds behind the Community Garden to provide storage for hoses, tools, etc. The other two sheds could then be donated or sold as appropriate. The estimated cost of the new shed will be in the $9,000 area, with exact cost depending on some possible variations. In order for us to proceed with the storage shed, the B.C. needs financial support from you, the members of St. Hugh. I will provide a form for financial support that you can use to commit to some funding for this project. The St. Hugh maintenance fund can provide some of the needed money, since we have sufficient funds now for any major repair that might be needed, like replacing the roof. So the current $800 monthly contribution to the fund can be used to start building up the fund for the new shed. Please see me if you want more details about the new shed project. And please consider contributing to this worthwhile project. Best, Dick Moore
Gardeners Needed for Community Garden Springtime is coming on in north Mason County, and that means that the cleanup effort in the St. Hugh Community Garden is underway! Let s help the Garden Committee by pulling weeds, clearing out a plot or so, anything that you and your favorite gardening gloves might take pleasure in as the sun starts to warm the earth! Playing in the dirt can be fun. Fifteen minutes or an hour of help would be appreciated and make a real contribution to the beginning of the new 2013 season. If you haven t previously rented your own plot or if you have consider doing it this year. Several plots are open for CHURCH MEMBERS, and signups are underway now. Each plot is 4 X 6 rental for the entire season is only $10, less than last year. You provide your own seeds, plants, enthusiasm, and the fellowship with other gardeners will bring you great pleasure along with the harvest of fresh vegetables! Contact either Cliff or Sunny Cotey at or Donna Fisher at for application forms and or more information about this opportunity. You ll be glad you did! Tod Pritchard Memorial Scholarship Fund Consider this a reminder that contributions can be added to the Tod Pritchard Memorial Scholarship Fund any time you wish. As the Fund grows with such additions, it is a means of providing an even larger gift in the form of a scholarship to some deserving applicant. Each year, the St. Hugh Scholarship Committee selects a recipient who will join us for the scholarship presentation. In this time of rising tuitions, scholarships are truly needed and greatly appreciated. Consider this next time you have your check book out Annual Margaret Barnard Hat Sunday 2
Sad Farewell to Ginny Green At the April 8th ECW meeting, we will honor our much beloved friend, Ginny Green. She has invested so much time and wisdom to St. Hugh church over the years. From the 'little church' down on Hwy 3, to now, Ginny has been an inspiration to all who know her. Do come to this meeting so you can say a 'Farewell' to her in person We will honor Ginny at - and enjoy refreshments until the meeting begins at 10:30. Following the short business meeting, at 11:00 we will have a program put on by Claudette May, called 'Hats Through the Years'. She has an extensive collection of hats, and some stories to go with them! This will be great fun for all! Annual Spring Highlight The Huff girls, Elizabeth and Rebecca, are now selling tickets at $15 each for the annual 'SPRING TEA' that the local Job's Daughters' Bethel #43 holds at the Belfair Masonic Temple. This year, the Spring Tea will be on Saturday, April 27th at 1:00. Not only will there be a delightful tea, but also a fashion show and a silent auction. Elizabeth and Rebecca are both active members of the Bethel, and we are proud of them. This is a fine organization that through its training and opportunities, teaches and encourages girls to become young women in which our community can take great pride. Let's support them and take a guest to the SPRING TEA! Whitney is the girl that lives down the road, whose brother was killed in a car accident 2 years ago A reminder that April 7th, is Food Sunday. Please bring your donations of non- perishable food. Pat & Birthday Boy Mel, take on Hat Sunday. 3
New address and pictures from - Jesse Thompson Pyxis Circle Rancho Cordova CA Dear Friends who do Coffee Hours after church: Since the success of serving refreshments at the back of the church - for the recent memorial service - ECW has decided to continue using that space, and will keep a long table there for this purpose. By using the back area for the food, there will be so much more space for people to mingle and socialize comfortably at the Coffee Hour after. Thanks for remembering this - and using that table! 4
Barry and Vicki's Big Adventure 8 Oct. Another good night's sleep. Much cooler and windy in Rome today even though a sunny day. It really felt good to me to walk around with the fresh wind blowing my hair. At breakfast we sat with two nice couples from Colorado Springs. One of the men suggested we see St. Ignatius of Loyola and another suggested we tour St. John Laterans. After breakfast, we got underway and walked to St. John Lateran's which was fairly close to our hotel. On the way we saw another small ancient-looking church and went in. Some locals were setting up for a wedding and we stayed a bit just to be in the joy of the moment for these young people. The family and friends arriving were all dressed beautifully. St. John Laterans is a beautiful, very large archbasilica. At one time, it was where the Pope lived and presided before the Vatican was built. We took in all the beauty...the walls, floors, ceiling...everything was gilded and decorated. As we were leaving, I heard a beautiful sound and told Barry we needed to reenter the church. An all-mens acapella choir was beginning to sing. Absolutely amazing sound quality in that large space. They gave a lovely performance and I was so glad we could stay and listen. We left St. John Laterans and walked to the underground metro to ride to the Spanish Steps. It was a Saturday and the metro was packed! It felt like an intimate experience whether you wanted it to be or not. Wow! We really were like sardines in a can. When we arrived at our stop, we walked to the church at the very top of the Steps and toured it. A beautiful view of Rome from the church. We walked down the steps where lots of people were sitting, lounging and taking advantage of a good photo op. From there we walked to the Plaza del Popolo or Plaza of the Popes. After seeing all there was to see, we walked along the Tiber River. I remember studying the Tiber River in grade school and daydreaming of being there one day. We stopped at a sidewalk cafe for lunch...of course, I had pizza. Then we walked to a bridge that crossed the Tiber to the Castle San Angelo which figured prominently in Dan Brown's book and movie "Angels and Demons". The view from the top of the castle was fabulous. Barry took movies and pictures and we tried to find our hotel from this vantage point. We never did find the hotel, but did locate the Coliseum (sort of hard to miss) so we knew the approximate location of our hotel. From there we walked to St. Ignatius of Loyola and it is such an amazing church. So many of the churches in Italy are domed. This church ceiling is painted so it looks to the naked eye like it is domed, but it is not! We saw groups of students laying on the floor looking up at the ceiling to try to see how the painting was done to make the ceiling look domed. Barry could see it, but I never could. From there, we walked down the Via Condotti where all the high-end shops are located. It was fun to window shop and see all the latest fashions which hadn't hit the United States yet. We browsed Cartier, Prada, and Ferragamo just to name a few. We then walked to the Trevi Fountain so I could throw a coin over my shoulder into the fountain to ensure we would return to Rome someday. I sure hope we can! After that we walked back to our hotel. We probably walked another 5 miles today and we were both tired upon our return. We rested up and read awhile. Barry watched CNN to catch up on the latest news. The only Englishlanguage stations we've found are CNN and BBC and it's nice to be able to see what's happening around the world once in a while. We then walked to a sidewalk cafe right across the 5 lanes of traffic from the Coliseum for our last dinner in Rome. The Coliseum at night is so beautiful all lit up. It was quite cool sitting outside for dinner and it cooled my pasta off before it's time, but we wanted to have as much of Rome as we could fit in, and it just seemed sitting inside a restaurant was not the place for us. We packed fairly light for the 3 days in Rome so didn't have jackets, so a cup of great coffee after dinner helped to warm us up for our walk back to the hotel. When we got back in the hotel, we checked the dining room and some of the people we had met there were just finishing up their meal, so we went in and sat with them to visit a bit and say goodbye to them. We would be leaving Rome at 6:00 am the next morning and would not have an opportunity to say goodbye in the morning. The chef and son of the hotel owner, Ferris, invited us to join them for dessert. We had chocolate mousse, espresso and an aperitif of gentian. We bid everyone a fond farewell and pleasant travels and returned to our room at 9:30 for a good night's sleep. Tomorrow, we catch the train back to Cortona and will bid farewell to Rome, at least for now. 5
