Bad news, sad news, depressing stuff. Where can we turn? Where is God in all of this mess? After getting my grandson off to school, I sat down for my comforting ritual. Won't you join me? A Liturgy for the Ritual of Morning Coffee (or tea!) Meet me, O Christ, in the stillness of this morning. Meet me, O Spirit, to quiet my heart. Mend me, O Father, from yesterday's harms. From the discords of yesterday, resurrect my peace. From the discouragements of yesterday, resurrect my hope. From the weariness of yesterday, resurrect my strength, From the doubts of yesterday, resurrect my faith. From the wounds of yesterday, resurrect my love. 2 Message from Council We had a very productive annual meeting and the best part of all is that you accepted the revisions to the constitution which now brings us into compliance with the ELCA. You also accepted the documentation and definitions to our designated funds which should end the confusion and streamline the maintenance of these accounts. Best of all, as a result of this meeting, you elected Brenda Hill to serve with us on council. We are so looking forward to Brenda s help. Council will meet after services on Sunday, November 11. As always, we welcome your comments and hope you will keep council in your prayers. Worship Team Next Sunday we are celebrating All Saints Day. Complete with candles and spoken memorials for departed friends and love ones. Come join in remembering the friends and family have have already gone to their heavenly reward Next Sunday, November 4th, join us in an intergenerational event. Marty s Door, located in the basement. Marty s door will be used as a medieval Facebook for prayers, information and announcements Using your creativity and assorted various items pens and other stuff to pin to the door. You will be doing your work on fabric scraps as parchment and using safety pins to mount to the door. This activity is very appropriate for children. Please bring food. This is for brunch. 3 Shepherds Rest Since attendance is beginning to drop off at the Alteration Saturdays, our ladies will not meet during November and December. They will be using this time to regroup and rethink this event. Once again, please be prepared to expect Angels for our tree next month. Taste & See Ministry We have some good news and some bad from Taste and See. The bad news is they have lost the building in Dallas that they worked so hard on for their shelter. But this will not stop the work of the ministry. Taste and See will continue to provide rent assistance, food and utility assistance to homeless or struggling families. In the meantime, they will step up their search for another building. More work from the ministry, New Hope First Baptist will open their fellowship hall as a warming station through the winter months. They will be able to provide a meal, a place to brush teeth and a warm place to sleep for a night. They are requesting help with transporting the guest and supervision to spend the night. The ministry will not be serving meals the week of Thanksgiving but they are collecting food and toiletry items for families to get them through this week. This list can be provided upon request and any help will be greatly appreciated. We have made plans to serve another meal on Thursday, November 15. If you would like to help please contact Rebecca Harley. And since the Wacky Needles ladies have an abundance of prayer shawls they will direct their attentions to working of hats during the cold winter months. 4 Women of the Church Happy November. The holiday season is upon us. We rush and buy and wrap and cook. Do we stop to be thankful? On November 18th we will be receiving thank offering boxes and gifts. The idea of collecting donations in small offering boxes goes back to the very early 1800s, when women formed mite or cent societies to raise money. Mite boxes were given out as fundraising tools to collect pennies for the support of church projects and foreign missionaries. These women-led cent societies, platforms for social activism as well as evangelism in the 19th century, published their own literature, Bible studies and other materials advocating around issues such as child labor, literacy and prison reform. In time, larger missionary and ladies aid societies developed out of this work because there was such an overwhelming demand not only for foreign missionary support but for support at home. These women s groups funded needs in their local churches as well as local community projects. Their capacity for fundraising was acknowledged and generally welcomed by their congregations. This is just a short history. We collect money in our boxes and help in our community. Each year there is a decision made as to where we will send our money. This year we will send it to the Taste and See Ministry starting up in Dallas, GA. There are banks in the back of the church. Pick one up and take it home. As you do the laundry and find money in the washing machine, drop it into the bank. Check your couches for change out of pockets. The change our of your pockets after being out. All these coins are the widow's mites He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on. The Widow s Mite, Mark 12:41-44 Earthly Responsibility Respecting our World We are at the height of the flu season. The most common way to share the flu is on your hands. Wash your hands when you come in from outside with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Wash when you are around children often. Help them to wash also. Wash your hands several times when you are preparing food. Use the push antibacterial when you are in public. WE have some located at the rear of the church. AND if you are a flu shot person get it soon. Marguerite Todd
