2 Season of Pentecost- Ordinary Time Most of the Seasons of the Christian Church Year are organized around the two major festivals that mark sacred time, Christmas and Easter. The Christmas Season encompasses the time of preparation during Advent and the celebration of the Twelve Days of Christmas and Epiphany (January 6th). The Easter Season encompasses the time of preparation during the 40 weekdays of Lent and Holy Week, and is linked with Pentecost Sunday 50 days later. While there are other individual holy days within the church year, these seasons mark the movement of sacred time within the church calendar. The rest of the year following Epiphany and Pentecost is known as Ordinary Time. Rather than meaning common or mundane, this term comes from the word ordinal, which simply means counted time (Second Sunday after Pentecost, etc.), which is probably a better way to think of this time of the year. In fact no Sunday is ordinary because it is always a mini Easter, the Day of the Lord, the celebration of the day Christ rose from the dead. So the title Ordinary is used to differentiate these days from the Sundays of preparation and festival. Rowan Williams, our current Archbishop of Canterbury, has said of Ordinary time that it is actually the extraordinary time won for us in Christ. Counted time after Pentecost always begins with Trinity Sunday (the first Sunday after Pentecost) and ends with Christ the King Sunday or the Reign of Christ the King (last Sunday before the beginning of Advent). Many Protestant church traditions consider the Sundays following Epiphany a season of Epiphany that runs until the beginning of Lent. Those traditions that follow the Roman Catholic calendar only count January 6th as Epiphany and do not think of a season of Epiphany, so consider the Sundays following part of Ordinary Time. In either case, the Sundays after Epiphany are counted (1st Sunday after Epiphany, etc.) so technically are Ordinary Time. One feature of Ordinary Sundays is the way the New Testament and the Gospels are read. In the festival seasons the readings are chosen according to the theme of the season. In Ordinary Time, they are read in sequence so that a particular book is read completely through. Each year is given over to a particular Gospel. A worshipper, coming regularly to the Sunday Eucharist for the three years, will hear most of the New Testament read aloud. The sanctuary color for Ordinary Time is traditionally dark green, although other shades of green are commonly used. Green is symbolic of the new life and also of the Holy Spirit. Prayer Thought for Today I Believe that Your are The Christ: Today we hear how Peter professed his faith in our Lord. O let us not despise the humble path Christ trod, but choose, to shame the worldly-wise, the foolishness of God. 2. The Grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. And also with you. Sentence Those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for the sake of the gospel will save it. Mark 8:35 There is one Body and one Spirit; there is one hope in God's call to us. One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism, one God and Father of all. In confirmation those who have been previously baptised come to confirm their baptismal promises and join with the other candidates to receive the laying on of the bishop's hand with prayer. We pray that those who are baptised and confirmed will be empowered by the Holy Spirit for the ministry and service to which God shall call them. So we welcome you, Matt and Jenni, with your sponsors, families and friends. We give thanks for you, and pray that you may know God's love and faithfulness for ever. Priest: Priest: Let us Pray Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. The Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near. 8 A reading from the Letter to the James Chapter 2 - beginning at verse 18 (NRSV) But someone will say, You have faith and I have works. Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith. You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe- and shudder. Do you want to be shown, you senseless person, that faith without works is barren? Was not our ancestor Abraham justified by works when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was brought to completion by the works. Thus the scripture was fulfilled that says, Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness, and he was called the friend of God. You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. Likewise, was not Rahab the prostitute also justified by works when she welcomed the messengers and sent them out by another road? For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is also dead. Gradual Hymn Hear the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. 1. Holy Spirit, go before us, every mind and heart prepare for good news of life in Jesus, for the joyful hope we share. Gently lead the lost to safety, gently teach them Wisdom s way, till they come to seek you gladly, till we find the words to say. 2. Holy Spirit, come and help us, give us words to speak of Christ. Teach us how to tell all people: deepest darkness can be light! Help us tell how faithful God is, and how Jesus sets us free; take our words, and make them gospel, so that many may believe. 3. Holy Spirit, stay to show us how to serve as Christ served us. May our words of love be grounded in love s actions, first and last. The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark Chapter 8- beginning at verse 27 (NRSV) Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, Who do people say that I am? And they answered him, John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets. He asked them, But who do you say that I am? Peter answered him, You are the Messiah. And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him.then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things. He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. 10 The Presentation We welcome those who have come to be confirmed. I invite their sponsors to present them now. The congregation repsonds by saying We present Matt and Jenni Lord who come to be confirmed. The Decision Speaking to the candidates the Bishop says: Before God and this congregation, you must affirm that you turn to Christ and reject all that is evil: Do you turn to Christ? Candidates: I turn to Christ. Do you repent of your sins? Candidates: I repent of my sins. Do you reject selfish living, and all that is false and unjust? Candidates: I reject them all. Do you renounce Satan and all evil? Candidates: I renounce all that is evil. Almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness, and lead you in the light of Christ to his everlasting kingdom. Amen. Will you each, by God's grace, strive to live your whole life as a disciple of Christ, loving God with all your heart, and your neighbour as yourself? Candidates: I will, with God's help. The Congregation stands and the Bishop says to them: You have heard these our brothers and sisters renew their response to Christ. Will you support them in this calling? We will. Please remain standing Priest: Let us pray for those who have affirmed their Baptism and are to receive the laying on of hands. Grant, Father, that Matt and Jenni may be so buried with Christ in baptism that the new nature may be raised up in them. May the fruit of your Spirit grow and flourish in them. Amen. 11 Give to Matt and Jenni s families and to this congregation, the desire to share with them what you have revealed in your holy gospel. Amen. May they know Christ's forgiving love and continue in the fellowship and service of his Church. May they proclaim, by word and example, the good news of God in Christ. Amen. We thank you for the ministry we have in your world and to each other in the household of faith. Hasten that day when the whole creation shall be made perfect in Christ. Amen. The Profession of Faith The bishop says to the candidates to be confirmed. The congregation responds with the candidates. I now ask you to affirm as yours the faith of the Church. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth; Do you believe in God the Son? I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the reserrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 12 Would the congregation please sit The Confirmation Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth. Blessed be the name of the Lord now, and for ever. Amen. Almighty and everliving God, you have given your servants new birth by water and the Spirit, and have forgiven them their sins. Strengthen them, we pray, with the Holy Spirit that they may grow in grace. Increase in them the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of discernment and inner strength, the spirit of knowledge and true godliness, and fill them with wonder and awe at your presence, through Jesus Christ our Lord now and for ever. Amen. Each candidate to be confirmed is now invited to come forward and stand before the bishop, who lays his hands upon each of them. The sponsors standing behind the candidate. Strengthen, Lord, your servant (name) with your Holy Spirit. Empower and sustain (him/her) for your service. Each Candidate answers with the congregation. Amen The Bishop anoints each candidate with the Oil of Chrism on the forehead and on the palms of the hands. After all the candidates have received the laying on of hands and anointing, the congregation joins with the bishop in saying this prayer. Defend, O Lord, these your servants with your heavenly grace, that they may continue yours for ever, and daily increase in your Holy Spirit more and more until they come to your everlasting kingdom. 13 The Bishop prays for those upon whom hands have been laid. Almighty and everliving God, watch over these your servents upon whom we have laid our hands. Let you Holy Spirit always be with them and lead them to know and obey your word, that they may serve you in this life, and dwell with you in the life to come: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The newly confirmed are brought forward and face the congrgation and receive a round of applause. All stand. In baptism, God had made us one in Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. We greet one another with a sign of peace. The newly confirmed return to their places to exchange the greeting. Offertory Hymn 1. There s a spirit in the air, telling Christians everywhere: Praise the love that Christ revealed, living, working in our world. 2. Lose your shyness, find your tongue, tell the world what God has done: God in Christ has come to stay. Live tomorrow s life today. 3. When believers break the bread, when a hungry child is fed, praise the love that Christ revealed, living, working in our world. 4. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We participate by watching and listening as the Priest sings or says the first part of the Great Thanksgiving. This prayer is seasonal and concludes with these or similar words: Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. 15 Let us proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The priest continues the Eucharistic Prayer. The prayer concludes with these or similar words:..with whom, and in whom, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, we worship you, Father, in songs of never-ending praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us your peace. The gifts of God for the people of God. Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The sacrament is given. 18 After Communion We rely on your constant love, O Lord; we will be glad, because you will save us. We will sing to the Lord, because he has been good to us. Psalm 13:5,6 Let us Pray. God of mercy, by whose grace alone we are accepted and equipped for your service: stir up in us the gifts of your Holy Spirit and make us worthy of our calling; that we may bring forth the fruit of the Spirit in love and joy and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen All who have been baptised and confirmed are called to study the Bible, to take part in the life of the Church, to share in the Holy Communion, and to pray faithfully and regularly. We are called to share with others, by word and example, the love of Christ and his Gospel of reconciliation and hope. We are called to love our neighbours as ourselves, to honour all people and to pray and work for peace and justice. I invite you to commit yourselves anew to this calling. How does he differ form the nation of Israel? What new elements about the servant, not found in the previous two servant songs, are added to this passage? Why might the servant be mistreated like this and what give the servant confidence and hope in the light of such treatment.? Mark Why is the question, Who do you say the I am so important? Who did the people of Jesus day think he was? Who do people today say Jesus is? What about you, and how has your answer changed over time? According to this passage what is involved in being a follower of Jesus? Some tips for Reading the Bible.. 1. What is the verse actually saying? Who is speaking? Who is being spoken to? What is being said? When is happening? Where is it happening? 2. What does the passage mean to me? What is the main message of the passage? Why do you think it has been included in the bible? How does the passage link up with other passages? Why has God put this passage in front of me? What can you learn from the passage- is there something new or is it a reminder? 3. What do I do about it? Is there something I should be doing about what I have read?
